40 classes...behind the typical SOE pay-wall?

zanfirezanfire Member UncommonPosts: 970
I really dont enjoy the fact that the game is gonna be F2P, i looked at what they did to EQ2 going F2P and its obvious they are trying to make you pay for every ounce of content. So can we expect like 10 "free" classes and like the other 30 behind a 5$ each pay-wall? Really wish they would just make it P2P so everyones on the same level with content. Sick of these games selling every little piece of content seprate, feels like it just fractures the hell out of the community.

Everquest and Everquest II don't have any paywalls for classes/races with the exception of Beastlord and Freeblood which you need to buy the expansion to access.

like the paywall for WOW DK and Monk -- cannot play the classes without expansion?

most AAA mmos offer classes/races that way, through expansions,  including ftp

I am pretty sure they wont charge for classes.. or fi they do it wont be the only way to get said classes..

You will unlock classes by exploring and going around the world doing things they already said this.

Either way they are a company and out to make money so yes there will be things in the cash shop that most people will want to buy.. Similar to PS2 with the premium option to get xp and stuff faster.. Dont get em wrong I wanted this to be a sub based game and i hate the idea of cash shops usually but SOE did ok with PS2 so as lnog as they follow that setup i will be happy.

why not make it B2P? after playing gw2, i can say it works well. would be much better than F2P.

I dunno, I have a feeling they'll be in the cash shop. The bulk of the game will be unlocking their abilities imo and finding armor skins.

True.. they only pay wall you if you hate dying.. Gimping players to certain tiers of spells and gear is annoying.. I"ve played EQ2 and I know how much of a difference access to tiers make in living or dying from a fight..

There is NO indication of how the cashshop will be handled in EQN at all in any source coming from the devs or SOE.

They have specifically stated many times that you gain all the post-character creation classes through behavior specific quests.

Where did you get this information?  Oh, that's right, from nowhere.

Take a look at EQ2's FTP Matrix.  As you can see, all races and classes are open.  There is also a sub option to get access to everything that FTP limits you on.

Here is EQ's FTP Matrix as well.  Notice the similarities?

One more:  Vanguard.  Are you noticing a trend here?

Now, the EQN team hasn't yet released the details on their FTP model.  Based on the previous EQ games as well as Vanguard, you can probably be safe inferring there will be similar matrices.

OMG what if they did classes like PS2 weapons image

    I doubt it though ;)

Such a tactic would be moronic considering classes are one of many elements they've used as reward for doing the content in the game.

I would bet the initial 40 classes are not pay to play but any additional ones will be.  Probably any additional weapon sets also.

You have to pay $15 a month for the stupid pop up to go away?

    Fuck that shit.

    Favorite MMO: Vanilla WoW
    Currently playing: GW2, EVE
    Excited for: Wildstar, maybe?

i know for a fact it used to not be like that, i remember when it first went f2p they locked half the classes and said you needed to unlock them in the store. Im guessing its changed since the last time i played, which is a good thing and might give me a reason to try it again.

    Most likely not.

There's apparently only 8 classes available to pick from on character creation.   I suppose they could limit those if you don't pay/sub or something, but seems pretty unlikely.

The rest you have to earn in game.   Again, I suppose they could sell the other 32 (Presumably there's 40 classes available on release) in the cash shop as an alternative to earning them in game but that sounds unlikely too.   Major companies seem to want to get away from the Pay To Win stigma if they can.

I think some of that stuff being charged for in EQ 1 and 2 earlier on was just them trying to find stuff to charge for in games that were designed around subs for a long time (See SWTOR for a list of goofy things to start charging for when switching from subscription to F2P).   EQ Next has been designed to be F2P from the beginning though.

I don't think they'll put them behind a pay wall but if they do it's definitely not a game I'll be playing for long.

I really doubt they will though.. all this sideways progression talk and classes to 'unlock' makes it sound like they are all earned through gameplay.

If using certain gear found in game is behind a pay wall though, like in their other main MMOs, I won't even be installing it. That is a FTP element that needs to be removed from existence, it's one the most PTW options I've ever seen.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

SOE needs to make money somehow, so it could very well be they sell direct unlocks for the classes.

Either play and grind them out slowly, or pay a little here, little there to significantly speed things up.  I think SOE wouldn't stop at selling class unlocks though; I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of monetization for convenience stuff.  Even in-game currency.

People will say it's not P2W because, someone "too cheap to buy anything" can grind away to get the same items.  It cheapens the experience, but those who pay will justify their decision that they "grinded" for their real money so it's OK to spend how they want ... and SOE will just wipe their hands clean because it's too hazy an area to be P2W..
