OH I agree.. I just don't like HOW they did it.. The past implication was still out there.. If you read the forums the past year before this debut of EQN , People were all over the place with assumptions , hype and planning.. People were talking about raid progression like ToV.. and the DKP system guilds will use, etc etc etc. I don't believe for ONE second that the devs didn't know this chatter was going on for the past year..
They could of easily at any time say, "Attention folks, We hope we are not going to upset many, but in our reboot of EQ3 we decided to go in a different direction and feel we need to remind the current fan base that EQN will be NOTHING like EQ1 or EQ2, and it only shares the name"..... But instead.. We get "we aren't ready to talk about that yet".... and the weeks and months go by letting the hype build.. Ofcourse a good portion of the current player base is going to be a little pissed..

They did, you just weren't paying attention and were reading what you wanted to read.
I mean, they told you they were ripping up the rulebook. That they realised they were just making a bigger and better version of EQ1 and 2 and that they felt the formula had been rehashed to death. They realised they wanted to move the genre forwards and be truly innovative.
What in the fuck does different yet familiar even mean? Its nonsense.
What we know is the combat system, guild wars 2 was shallow and it only had 10 skills. You arent going to convince me at all that eqnext will be deep and engaging with 8 buttons and the promise of AI so advanced it will revolutionize the genre.
It's not up to anyone here to convince you of anything.
Different yet familiar could mean a number of things, familiar locations, familiar RPG systems, Familiar story lines etc...
I'd also like to point out their initial reveal focused on what's different and new to the genre, they were showcasing these new systems, and talking about their new approach to combat/classes/progression. Who's to say what they'll reveal from now until launch?
Some of you think yourself into a box, not to mention the tunnel vision, first appearances can be deceiving, similar in writing to GW2 does not mean it will play anything like it.

I AM an eq vet. Played it almost exclusively for 8 years until right before Underfoot and left when it had become something other than the game I enjoyed. Played EQ2 a bit also.
Honestly, I like what they are doing. Bring it on! Especially since they said I can stop anyone from destroying my stuff. I don't understand how people can assume it will be so much like GW2. 8 buttons doesn't mean one has to use them the same way and it isn't the ui that makes a game solo-centric. Its the world and the encounter mechanics.
I am still hoping for non linked, splittable mobs and trains, and prey hard enough that I have trouble killing one much less two. We shall see what we shall see.
Question for you if they were tp remake EQ1/EQ2 what do u think will do to those player bases. EQN there trying to reach out for other audiency base that isnt already playing on of there games, why would they siphon players from there own games for a new one when they can try and get into other markets.
What reality are you living in? When they remade the hulk movie was the hulk now a telapath who goes around fighting white collar crime? When they remain the spider man movies was spider now a meglomeniacal anti hero chick who was half spider/half human?
Give one example of a reimagining that is even close to the complete opposite of all the previous versions like this?
Nobody was expecting EQ1 with updated graphics, but this is rediculous.
The Ang Lee movie 'Hulk' was a re-imagining that was so far off from what comic book fans thought it should be, it was widely panned for its re-imagining.
Spider-man movies decided that the webs would be a genetic alteration rather than a scientific invention of Peter Parker's - drew wide spread criticism from comic book fans as it 'downplayed' Peter's scientific genius and thus detracted from a very important concept in the franchise - but in Spider-man 3 he is a meglomeniacal anti hero who is consumed by the suit...
Ask Iron Man fans how they feel about The Mandarin in IM3.
My example of a re-imagining that is complete opposite of the previous versions:
EQ2 - casual based, quest hub based, heavily instanced, soloable to max, wildly different models, new races, changing Erudites from black people with big heads to aliens with glowing tattoos - the geography of Norrath can't even be explained by whatever cataclysm happened between games.....
My second example is Legends of Norrath - again pretty wildly different in almost everyway from EQ.
The example you seek is right under your nose. EQ. They have done it with every new game in the franchise - my question to you - why would this one be different?
If you like EQ so much - y'know, its servers are still live. You'll have better luck convincing developers to tweak the game you loved than convincing them to change directions to re-make EQ into EQN.
I'm sorry you expected 're-imagining' to be a 're-creation' of your old favorite game and it isn't. I'm sorry you expected to see them re-hash old systems and ideas slapped with modern graphics and instead it is new systms and new ideas. I know you say 'no one expected them to reskin EQ" - What did you expect? It's Norrath. It's EQ lore. It's fantasy based. It has exploration as a major component. You fight magical foes to obtain skills and loot. What were your expectations?
Most of us want someting new. Something we haven't played before. I don't know if EQN will deliver - but I'll be pretty let down if I load it up and find it is a game I've already played 10000 times before.
When someone re-imagines something - I want them to use their imagination.

That pretty much covers everything you said.
The message has been on the wall for over a year. Now we have something new, refreshing, and wholly designed as an evolutionary game. People can dig their heels in all they want, but at the end of the day they don't have to play it-- the rest of us will.
Do they care? Yes all companies care .. and by that I mean they want to make money. If they meet their financial goals and some % of users are not happy.. then to those users it will seem like they do not care. If the company fails to meet their financial goals then they will suddenly care in a "new" way.. Profit is the only thing companies and their share holders really care about.
As to the discussion on re-imagined etc...
During the reveal Dave was pretty clear that they not only rebooted the world but the lore as well. He then used the JJ Abrams reboot of Star Trek as a similar example. So.... with that given.. I thought it was pretty clear what kinds of things to expect. Of course you had to stay awake through the EQ Relationships/sand art segment to see it... and I can totally understand if people nodded off there.

My hope is that through this stretch between Reveal Day and release, that they do put in more complex styles of interaction on top of the guildwars 2 style short clickable buffs etc. This is the main point I ws driving at. We still don't really know if they plan to include this or go strait EQ2 as far as how long certain buffs, debuffs etc will last and so time will tell with this part.
The Star Trek part is actually pretty good. It paints a picture of either a majorly changed eq lorewise where something happened that made things this way or...wait for it.....This is more a prequel and re-imagining at the same time. The facts they laid out of players actually working together to craft the main cities of Halas and other iconic EQ locations points squarely in this direction which sounds kind of amazing to me.
I hope they touch more on crafting basics in the coming weeks and months in the game. I am really interested in all the goodies and depth of that side of the game.
I dont think the devs make many decisions in AAA games anymore....Its the suits who come out of meetings saying"Ok take Everquests names, GW2 skill system, miecraft building, and Vindictus destruction and make us a game...Ready...go!...Oh yeah and make sure its playable on the PS4.....mmm kay
