The negative reaction of the unveiling of EQNext of large percentage of people, was a bit like watching Kubler Ross's five stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Many of us, me included, met the unveiling with a bit of bewilderment. EQNext doesn't feel like a EQ game. For me, EverQuest was a bit darker and unforgiving and required patience and utter dependency on your group. It had tons of lore and dungeons galore. At times it was unsophisticated, ugly and frustrating to play.
I half expected SOE to take EQ back to its roots based on what put out into the press. But EQNext is looking to the future and that future doesn't include many of the staples of what we come to expect from MMOs. EQN is what it is and its not going to change. Although, I can't be the only one that's not surprised on how it turned out. The warning signs where there in that the industry was moving away from traditional MMOS.
When GW2 was launched, gone where the quest hubs and the trinity. TSW pretty much threw classes out the window Netherwinter dropped the trinity too and pretty much everything is going either f2p or b2p. We just have to accept the MMO world has moved on. Final Fantasy 14 ARR is probably one of the last AAA "old school" MMOS that will have the trinity and is p2p. A few indy developers will try to fill a gap in the market, but none of the big publishers will pour their money into something like Rift or EQ again. Their time has come and gone.
I'm excited to see how other companies respond to this game, but anything that will respond is years down the road, but I've complained about the same tired stuff for long enough, and SOE has come up with their answer. I may not entirely like the answer, but at least I can safely say that the world has moved on from WoW and that also means moving on from the original everquest.

It's been THREE days. Three. 1,2,3.
They have barely shown anything. Relax.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Seriously.
I get it. People are passionate and opinions are going to be strong. But it's only been a couple of days and we really didn't see much more than a tech demo, and we've only been given basic information. There's just not enough out there right now to really judge this game one way or the other.
If they are getting rid of the "trinity" I for one am glad!!!
I remember starting out playing UO, and they did not have the trinity system, every class had some sort of healing ability. The game came down to how skillful a player you were. And the best gear for a while was the gear your GrandMaster Smithy could make.Ahh the good old days, Fak these lame theme park games they make now a days.
