[Interview] General: Civilization Online: It's Real, and It's Happening

What happens when you cross Jake Song of XLGAMES and the legendary Civ series? You got it: Civilization Online. It may not be exactly what you're expecting so you won't want to miss our exclusive interview with Jake to talk all about Civilization Online. Read on and then start buzzing in the comments.

In Civilization Online you will play as a humble citizen. You begin as just one person in the culture or faction you choose to join. You’ll be involved with all of the other players in your faction against the other three cultures in the game. So, from a gameplay aspect Civ Online is all about your single person in this great big world.  Jake explained that you will be able to explore, craft, make discoveries, and yes, go to war against your fellow players.  The entire game will be taking place in a massive real-time map. Because of this design, they wanted to drop the turn-based systems and go with an open, ever changing world.

My interest is piqued. This sounds really good on paper. I like the sound of the pvp elements, for me Civ games have always been nuking the crap out of Gandi while his faction still have bows and arrows ;) Waiting to see how this comes along.

I'm not a big fan of grand strategy games, but this is something I could enjoy. Hopes are high.

Holy schnikes!! What another gem for the mmo community to look forward to. To the people that say the mmo genre is dying, I laugh at their face.

Great, great news to hear.  I hope this game hits a home run and becomes a success.

The title reminded me the saying: ...and the just happened!!!

When XL told us about this, I was like "How on Earth can they make this kind of turn-based 4X game work as an MMO?" When they told us how... I was blown away by the ambition.  It reminds me a lot of a AAA version of A Tale in the Desert, but with warfare and combat playing an integral role as well.  This game could really eat up a lot of my time if it all comes together.

Release is TBA, by the way.

that's kind of neat; i've played the civ games since civ 2.

it reminds me of ATITD mixed with combat :)

though from the description it might be better called "the civs online"

I love where the mmo genre is heading now!

Its good to see that devs are also tired of the same old shit

This sounds like it could be good.. cant wait to see more info on this one.

I wonder how often the game "resets" and we start over?

New players probably dont want to start in the modern era.

Excellent question.   Also will the game become like other to the middle games and only 1 group runs everything, killing it for the single player.

No mention of free to play = WIN. So long as the sessions last a very long time, and you aren't constantly starting over, this could be epic. Ive been hoping for a historical first person MMO where you advance slowly through technology for a long time.

    Your taking the piss right?

As this seems to have nothing in common with wow.. other than it being a MMO..

That sounds realistic to me. If everyone is the King, then no one is.

The Civ series has tons of fans and would get every opportunity to succeed.....The main concern is can it seperate itself from all the other strategy MMOs that seem to feel the same?
  • JabasJabas Member UncommonPosts: 1,249

The "General" info is really nice.

Hope the detail info, when we have it, keeps that way.

What they want is not easy to implement, hope they can do it right.

    Looks interesting.

Only the cartoony graphics style disappointed me, why you need cryengine3 for that?.

Civ World was a valiant attempt to make a massively multiplayer version of a 2-20 player turn-based game. I'm interested in where this team takes it, especially since they are going 3D with it.

Piqued (stimulated) not peaked (reached the top and will be on decline from this point) - don't sweat it a very common mistakes even professional journalist slip up on this one.

Thank you very much. However, I notice that you did not spot that I spelled interest incorrectly. You are sacked as my editor henceforth! Good day to you sir! ;)
