Decent Gaming Laptop?

Here is a laptop with HD screen,Haswell I7, 8GB RAM and an Nvidia 750M (It also has ultrabay which lets you add a second card for SLI).  Cost is $789 with free shipping.  Looks like a fantastic deal on a laptop that should play games fairly well (competitive with laptops twice the cost).

 

Is this as good as it looks or am I missing something? I know it's only 5400 speed HD with the SSD cache but no option to upgrade at purchase.

The Lenovo Y510 series is one of the best budget "gaming" laptops you will find.  Most that will offer better gaming performance will tend to cost over $1K.  Personally I'd be looking to add a larger SSD immediately if I were to purchase that thing as not having one just makes the overall experience seem way too slow and 24GB is VERY small even for a OS only SSD.

 

EDIT: A thread talking about upgrading the SSD just so you are aware it IS indeed possible and not limited by Windows 8 as was suggested below.

I'm using a Y500 series and I love it.  I didn't get the base model, but I'm sure it's still just as good.  The only problem I have with it is the case is really bad about showing the oil from your hands.  But that's easily cleaned off with a single swipe of a damp paper towel (the case itself, never do it on the screen or while the computer battery is in lol).

 

Edit: you can't change the harddrive.  I read somewhere that Windows 8 doesn't like it when you change harddrives.

Yeah I think I will go for it as I just have not seen anything else better for less than $1k

That's quite good for the price tag.  Don't expect miracles out of the video card, though, as it's a low clocked bin of the lowest end discrete GPU chip from either AMD or Nvidia in the last two years.  It's plenty capable of running games at moderate to high settings, but don't get the idea that it's going to let you max everything in all games.

Right on.  As long as it will run games like Battlefield4 on medium I think that would be good.  I was waiting for you to weigh in on it before pulling the trigger.

 

I'd like to get a stronger video card but havent seen anything under 1k.. and this is under 800...

 

I suppose in a few months I could pop in a second 750m in the ultrabay for SLI as well.

Honestly if you are considering SLI and don't care too much about the extra heat (read: loss of overall system life) you'd be better to get the SLI version of that same laptop from the get go.  Obviously the overall discount is not as good on their current "special" but you might find it difficult to acquire an ultrabay GTX 750m sold separately.  However if that is a non-issue have at the single card version to start and see if you actually need the extra power.

Sorry, I'm not sure I actually understand the question?  Are you asking doe the internet provider matter in relation to how well a "gaming" laptop will perform?  If so the answer is no if you are asking specifically in relation to a "gaming" laptop vs a "non-gaming" laptop anyway.  A poor ISP would have the same effect on both in terms of games that require an internet connection to use.
