Why/What should I play now when Big MMOs are in the future?

hakiredhakired Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 30

So the big MMOs coming out either late this year or sometime in 2014 are.

EverQuest Next - Most promising.

Archage - Very Interesting

Elder Scrolls Online - Could be something

Blade And Soul - Potential good PvP

These are for me the big 4. My problem here is I'm looking for a reason to play the current MMOs. I know I would switch over to those other ones once It's released. So why should I invest lots of time in any of the games right now?

I can only think of Guild Wars 2 that's a AAA MMO that is worthwhile playing but I don't like the combat.

There will always be something big in the future.

Also those games you point may or may not meet your own expectations.

In my opinion GW2 is the best, but you also have TSW for a different spin and then you have a host of games that will require no monetary investment for some fun.

I have no idea why you should play a game or not.

I play them for fun, but it seems you are looking for some heavy investment into a game - but that isn't my department.

    Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders

Modern day MMOS end up being short term experiences for most players, 3 months or less in many cases so you'll likely have no issue trying them all.

I'd consider starting with FFXIV, then likely TESO will probably come out next. AA is most likely a 2014 title assuming Trion isn't in the process of going broke while EQN likely won't release until 2015.

You can mess with Landmark later this year from what they've said if you are interested in building worlds, though I prefer to tear them down so will likely pass.

Yeah. I don't know if i'm a minority here or the wide concensus but when I begin an MMO I automatically have the expectation that I'm going to spend MONTHS if not YEARS playing the game so I choose wisely.

I don't know if any if alot of you play an MMORPG then once you hit Level Cap in 3 weeks to a month.. You suddenly stop playing and say to yourself "Ah that was a good 2 months, I feel satisfied, What's next?"

Guild Wars 2 I agree with you is the best.. but ther eis something about that game that I just cannot love.

The game is so weeelll done it's unbelieavable. Ofcourse there are some features other games have that I wish GW2 had but yeah.

I actually log in Guild Wars 2 once a week with this mindframe

"This is the day that I will love guild wars 2 and I will play the hell out of it after today"

That day just did not come haha.

I play mmo's for fun and for the friends i made.
I always played Eve Online with a WoW / GW2 / Warhammer / Aion / SWTOR on the side line.

We just ended the war in Eve wich we won :)
Now its back to normal and iam looking at GW2 again....but GW2 is the most dull mmo to play.
WvW = running with zerg cap something run to next objective with zerg cap it and you keep running and running and running.
I realy hope EQN doesnt have the same shit as GW2 or i woulnt even touch it.

Just play the mmo where you have the most friends / fun with untill something else worthwile comes out.

I cant wait for some more info from World of Darkness myself :)
Its m number one mmo i am looking forward to !

But in the meantime i play all kinds of games and 2 mmo's to entertain myself :)

Open PvP has been ruined by the use of modern weaponry assault rifles and grenade launchers. Overall control is way too strong in PvP as there are no breaks for grabs once you're grabbed. Team based pvp is simply grab and burst, and extremely hard to prevent considering grabs have no animation to watch for. It may have been good in CBT2, but ever since then the skills have been a little over the top.

Personally Dragon Nest has the only pvp that I bother to watch.

There will always b a next big thing. That's hardly a reason to not enjoy what's already available. If you can't learn to have fun with what you have, you're going to become one of the jaded on these forums. Forever complaining about how nothing is good enough for them. Even when they get exactly what they asked for.

Other than that, it's hard to say based on a lack of info on what u like. You say you don't like gw2's combat. So I'm assuming you prefer the less action-oriented combat style, games like SWTOR, TSW, & WoW have. There's also others like Vanguard, EQ2, TERA, Aion, etc.

    - Also, don't forget about non-MMO games. There have actually been a LOT of really good games to come out in the past year or so. A lot of people seem to forget that, and only focus on MMOs, or a few of the most hyped.

A lot of those games on the list you won't be seeing till late 2014 into 2015. None of those game on your list are coming out later this year. Guaranteed.

Late 2014!!! Well that's enough reason for me to just stick to something right now for a year then.

What I mean by 'Combat' in GW2 is you actually cannot dodge or distance yourself from an enemy attack. It's not true form combat like Tera or DragonNest where the enemy has to actually visibly hit you for you to get hit.

Yeah. And you can always play some and come back if you like it enough.

For example, i finished Marvel Heroes main story missions/levels in about 30 hours. A nice free game. There are more levels and more classes (i.e. heroes) to level (just like ARPGs, although it is a "MMO").

I count this as a very good experience. Fun for 30 hours (1.5 months since release?) and more if i feel like it.

As devs create tools to make world through procedural methods you will see short term games become the norm.  Beancounters will see that most of the money comes near release so why not capture that money more often by creating several games per year.  Not something I look forward to.
