FF XIV: ARR with gamepad >>>>> FF XIV: ARR with keyboard+mouse

Amazing job by Square-Enix.  The gamepad UI is really great, the main menu is fantastic and the game works very well with a gamepad. I don't want to play anymore with keyboard+mouse.

Except during Fates/PvP/Raids, where the directional pad to switch targets doesn't work very well.

I play Gamepad 90% of the time, but I will be changing to keyboard/mouse for the above encounters.

So far tho, I'm really enjoying the game!

Have you seen the customizable target cycling filters? If you are used to click targeting then I guess there is no substitute for mouse but if you adjust the target cycling to your preference, it's still incredibly easy and manageable. Go to Main Menu--> System-->Character Configuration-->Control Settings-->Filters tab and then under 'Filters Customization' you can select the button combos to change how target cycling works (using left and right on gamepad). For example when you press RB+B it will only cycle through enemies, then if you hit RB+X it will only cycle through friends, but you can customize exactly what each category cycles through. The text right above your health bar tells you what the target cycling is currently set to based on these filters.

You can change the automaticaly toggled preference for target cycling when you sheathe/unsheathe your weapon too but I just turned that off after customizing it because they will constantly conflict with each other every time you go in and out of combat otherwise. But if you just use two modes then customizing it to apply based on whether your weapon is sheathed might be even easier.

I didn't know this, I will give it a try and see if its any easier during Fates/PvP etc.

I still think to be competitive in PvP you will need to use mouse/keyboard setup, and probably for raids too.

But I really enjoy using my gamepad over my mouse/keyboard so far :D

Yeah, I can't imagine any top PVPers would be using a gamepad but then I can't imagine PVPing in FFXIV anyway to be honest. I haven't paid any attention to the PVP side of the game.

I have played it both ways and now I mostly use gamepad to play and keyboard for chat even though I turned most of my chat off. As the poster above stated you can change the gamepad layout to fit your play style and I have done both fates and dungeons with no issue at all when needing to switch targets none.

Another advice: while you're holding RT to bring up your cross hotbar, press LB to cycle through nearby enemy targets.

Agreed, FFXIV has a smooth controller layout with great functionality, I too prefer it over KB+M.
