In the wake of the Combat Upgrade, a potential Sony Online customer is left confused: many mid- to high-level characters are mollified; the immature, twits are hawking this as the best thing since Marshmellow Fluff.

I am left confused by this upgrade, and the state of the game. Since buying the collector's edition, day one, I quit the game after--what?--two months. Woohoo. Another run-of-the-mill game. Some weeks prior to today, I decided to resurrect this game and give it a shot, again. I have been looking at some pretty screenshots, and I cannot say that it doesn't look like Star Wars.

So, I want to have a mature, insightful view on this game--and its current state with the Combat Upgrade for a new character. I will appreciate all responses, since I cannot really get flamed for the above content.

Thanks,

Merodoc

If you have not played in a long while, then you will probably not be turned off by the Combat Upgrade which basically took a good idea (balancing professions) and completely changed the way the game is played by long time vets, including myself (day one!).  I had five accounts at one time and slowly let them close until I was down to two prior to the CU.  Cancelled my crafter Friday Night (armorsmith) after finding out that most of our resources were no longer usable as well as armor crafting becoming a tortuous affair.  My last account is my "fighter" type who was a master commando but I am currently trying out other professions during the "respec" period (first two weeks of CU) where you can switch skill sets around.  I love to play solo a lot, occasionally group, but the solo game is dead.  Without a group, I cannot defeat anything above my "level" (god help me I can't stand that word) and barely survive against critters at my level.

In short, make of it what you will, some are happy, most are not . . . be careful when choosing your server because you may choose one that is a "ghost town".

The Force WAS with us, then came the CU!

It's hard to give my opinion on the current state of SWG without becoming slightly angry, so forgive me if I do lash out in anyway :)

Bugs and even more inbalance than the original system ever had. They put out yet another unfinished product, with the promise that it will be fixed and polished over time. Well, there are still bugs in the game from launch... will it take them yet another 2 years and another new combat system to fix the new and old bugs?

Honest opinion... Sony should just stick to making console games, because it's quite obvious they have no clue how to manage online gaming. Unless you enjoy playing some of the buggiest stuff there is on the market.

I quit, dropped my 3 accounts. The CU was just one more problem I didn't want to deal with. Adding to the mounting pile of BS that SOE kept feeding their SWG players. The game was great, despite its opening bugs and flaws. Then Jedi were introduced, then they reformated Jedi, then they added the worst expansion ever, then the CU. Their no fix attitude was driving me nuts, they would rather cover up the problems then address them. All they have to do is listen to the players to understand the core of their problems, but they ignored us and this CU is just gonna make them lose a lot more players and money. I'm glad i've cut the cord now instead of suffering thru more garbage from SOE.

Yeah this latest patch was enough for me to break the SWG habit. Some of the changes were okay, but on the whole, its completely new game that no longer holds any interest for this vet.

It just didnt seem like Star Wars anymore to me.

I was considering resubscribing to check out the CU. I beta tested SWG and played since day one up till WoW was released then canceled. I always had hoped to return shortly after they released the CU. Now after pouring over SWG's own forums to see what problems exsist and what the community mood really was, I think I'll have to pass. Nothing has really changed since October, still buggy and broken combat, just a different system.

Actually I have never seen so many players online (counting all the time since 2003) as I have seen  during last weekend. We encountered many bugs, true, and reported them ... but its just plain FUN to be with so many guild members and other in game friends.

    Have fun

Good to hear that some folks are having fun - not many people that I know of still play the game though and the servers that I used to play on are pretty much ghosted now according to all the friends who are playing out till their accounts expire.

All I know is that from a non-combat players point of view, it's no longer a game that I enjoyed playing (PvP was never that big for me and that's essentially all that's left in the game now - Player vs Player combat) and whilst I am saddened by that, its nice to know that some people find the changes fun.

Yeah, they basically turned it into an all out PvP game and left PvE in a very bad state, not to mention what they did to non combatants.

I think a lot of the CU fanboys and girls seem to forget that grouping was always an option, as was solo play. You had the option to make SWG as hard or as easy as you wanted before the CU. Now it's just always the same, from lvl 1 to lvl 80. You pick and choose your fights by the color of their dot. This isn't strategy, it's a kids connect the dot book.

Esclavo .. somehow I doubt you played a lot in SWG lately and certainly not missions. It takes quite some effort and the proper combination of actions to take down harder targets .... and even some of the supposedly easy ("grey") ones. Greys can kill you (although I suspect thats a bug), even if you are level 80.

Actually, I have.... missions and roaming spawns. And it's boring.

I played since almost launch and anyone that couldn't learn or figure out how to pull a mission lair safely within 2 weeks of starting the game was obviously not using his/her brain.

Even buffed in the PreCU game, I would single pull my Mokk missions and the Janta Caves and other such stuff. So it's nothing that I didn't know how to do.

The only reason to die now is if you run out of action because you are being forced to use spammed specials in order to attack at all..... since they decided to take out auto attack/defend. Or you don't know how to pull correctly. Or you pick a dot too hard for you.

PreCU, I used to do tons of things with no armor or buffs. It was challenging and much funner than the new system.

It's my opinion though.... you don't have to agree and we don't need to have some long drawn out discussion about who is correct. Cause neither one of us really is going to change the others mind.
