Just recently got turned on to this game and have been reading quite a bit.
I see that there is obviously a multitude of things to do flying around in space from exploring, trading, space battles, probably mining and space salvaging and I'm sure alot that hasn't been mentioned yet. What about on the planets? The only thing I've seen this far in this regards are 2 things:
- Somewhere it was said by the dev team that you can walk around and go to a bar and be social, etc. Do we know how in depth this is? On an inhabitable planet, can you land, get out and then wander around the massive place or city, outskirts, go into the surrounding area to explore, or even have hundreds of km's of actual land to roam around on? Or would you land somehow and you're kind of in a 'lobby' for that planet where you could do certain things yet never leave that area? I also read somewhere that it said that it would be suggested to 'leave your life-support suit on on most planets'; but this can also mean in the 'lobby' type of setup where its a town but you can't go outside of it.
Because this leads me into a big question for me as far as what I would want to do playtime wise:
- Would fighting people ONLY be in space or during boarding actions? Or (ignoring any security in place) could you find and kill people anywhere on a planet as mentioned above, assuming you can explore and run around, live on planets, etc? Am curious if this would be similar to SWG as far as options to Bounty Hunt and track/ambush the guy where he lives and hangs out rather than having to find the guy in space and shoot him.

You can only explore the parts on a planet for wich a scenery has been made. There is no procedural planet generation.
For some planets this might be a single scene, like a landing pad and a bar. For other planets it might be a couple of scenes stiched together to create a large area (see https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/13205-Concept-Art-Crusader). But I would not expect a complete planet.
As far as I know, nothing has been mentioned about combat on planets.
From what I understand it will be kinda like Freelancer on steroids. The principal will be the same however. There will be landing locations on planets... some like Earth and Terra may have 4-5 landing spots in different cities. As for the landing spots themselves they will be the landing port and the immediate surroundings like Bars, Ship Dealers, Commodity brokers, Equipment dealers and all of the platforms, streets and dark alleys that connect them together. Think of it like one level in an older level based FPS game like Doom. This will also unlike Freelancer be in full 3D FPS mode. I would guess there would also be an Over-The-Shoulder 3rd person mode as well as CryEngine 3 does support this.
Stations will be of a similar design as well. As for combat on planets and stations they are saying now not at release but it will be implemented down the road after launch. They want to get the Space Flight and Boarding Action mechanics bolted down and fine turned first so it's balanced and flawless for launch and then they will have the time to make sure Planet side and Station combat sees the same attention to detail it deserves.
Edit: Just for clarification... There will be combat on some stations at launch. These will be the stations out in the fringes of the universe that will be for Guilds/Pirates to fight over. The stations in UEE controlled space wont have combat at launch as they want to make sure it's fun and balanced and also they want some kind of anti-griefing mechanic in place to prevent someone from just deciding to mass murder everyone on a station/planet just for kicks.

At launch, the planets will just be small areas with facilities. You can walk around and enter the various areas, but do not expect to see everyone else around. When you enter a bar, if there are many people in it, only a fraction will be visible (but you can see all by name prolly in a list and maybe you can even change who you see in the bar physically, unknown on that). You cannot engage in combat while in such places.
The Devs have crazy plans to open up planets later on and even create planet-bound battles. They even spoke of making lawless cities where the "no combat in cities" rule is not in place and so you can wander around and anyone can shoot you.
However, I would not put much faith in those plans. Even if they go through with it, it will be years after the release of the game.
