Okay this may be a dumb question but I have been searching the internet and could not really find my answer. I want to know if once you get a the required classes to 30 and 15 for the job you want and you get the soul crystal do you have to start that job from level 1. Also once you acquire all the jobs or the jobs you want do you really need to take classes passed level 30. Thank you so much for your answers!

Job level is based on that main class' level. i.e. 30 Archer is a 30 Bard, level Archer to 40, it's now a 40 Bard.
Okay thanks a lot that makes a lot of sense so ideally maxing all classes will be essential or the classes you want to max because they reflect to your job level. Thank you so much.
No such thing as a level 1 Job. It is always based off the level of the primary class (what the dude above me said).
Also, when you play a class (gladiator etc) you can select certain skills from ALL other classes to fill up your bar. When you are playing a job (warrior, paladin etc) you get some job specific skills, and the set of classes whose skills you can select from is reduced to 3 (e.g. A paladin can never have a Thaumaturgy skill on their skill bar).
Playing a class tends to give you more flexibility. Playing a job tends to give you more group utility. Another way to look at it, classes are generally what people do solo work as, Jobs are what they run dungeons as (I'm sure some people will disect that statement). For example, warriors can never cast heal nor protect, however, a marauder (the primary class behind the warrior) can if they so choose.
I remember reading up about the cross skills. I have one more question though could I be on a job and still get experience for my class or classes or should strictly use jobs when I need that specific type of play at the given time.
There was something about a system where xp gained will be granted towards other classes, but I don't remember the specifics. Any xp you get as a Job applies to the primary Class, that much I know for sure. This whole trickle down thing; that's new and I'm kinda in the dark about (need to read up on it).
As far as what you play and when, heck that's up to you. Class and Job quests require you to complete as that class or job (they put that in the moment people started using lvl 50s to complete the lvl 30 job quests in 1.0.. hehe but it was fun while it lasted), and generally, post 30, people shouting for group members shout for Jobs not Classes. But there's nothing that says you can't go do whatever you want as your warrior solo just cause the marauder is more flexible, cause warriors are just fun as hell to play. That said, out solo, there are situations where skills like protect and heal make the difference between getting loot and moving on to the next kill, or waking up back at your home point.
the hell am i reading? am i playing a different game lol? lvl 40 archer = lvl 40 bard? what?
i dont know if im just reading you guys' posts wrong or you guys are simply mistaken or something.

No that's correct. Jobs are just specializations of classes. So the jobs level is equal to it's primary class level.
Yup.. lvl 40 archer = lvl 40 bard..
lvl 40 gladiator = lvl 40 paladin.
If I get gladiator to 30 and conjurer to 15, I can become a paladin. Once I equip the paladin stone on my gladiator, I become a lvl 30 paladin. If I hit lvl 31 while running around as my paladin and remove the paladin stone, I am a lvl 31 gladiator. That's how the armory system works w/ classes and jobs.
oh i understand now. since open beta max was lvl 20 i didn't hear anything about this during it. i thought OP was using class/job interchangably and you guys were confused and using them as separate terms. Was also under the impression that the class system(the advanced classes that you unlock by getting 1-2 classes up to a certain level was following ffxi's way, where they start from lvl 1)

I have the slight advantage of playing with the system since jobs were introduced in 1.0. It's a slick system, but I'll admit there are some things I don't like about it, particularly how it makes classes undesirable after lvl 30. And coming from XI as well, I totally understand thinking Jobs would start at lvl 1.
