So basically, I'm going to get my BFA for Theatre Design/Technology with a focus in lighting design within the next four years, and I have every intention of joining the union, but I don't understand it!
I want to, obviously, be a lighting designer within the union, ultimately in New York or Boston. However, I don't understand how to achieve that? Is it like a promotion process where I start off as a stage hand in a certain local and make my way up to lighting designer? I know there's some exam and portfolio review before I'm actually considered to be one within the union, but I really just don't understand the whole process of becoming a lighting designer within the union.
Does anyone with experience within the union, or understands what's going on want to explain this to me?
