So this means we are going to fight a major villian like Gaius on what would seem to be at most an 8 man (I never heard what party size that instance was but I assume it's not a raid like Crystal Tower and Bahamut's Labyrinth). Interesting...

8 is a full party and I imagine it will be more common in higher level dungeons. While 4 (or light party) will be more common in lower level dungeons just because as the game goes on there will probably be less people doing lower level dungeons a lot.

Actually it was confirmed in the last producer's live letter that Bahamut's would be an 8-man raid. Noticed that during the live translation on twitch.

I think you may have misunderstood my (admittedly unclear and grammatically awkward) post; I know what the group sizes are - I was expressing surprise that we would fight such a major villian in anything less than a 24 man.

Oh, right, I remember hearing about that now. That seems strange too, unless I missed something and all 24 man raids also have 8 man versions now. Was there anything in that letter about the size of the instance that features Gaius?

That's assuming Gaius turns out actually being one of the main villians of this game, how many FF games have you fighting who you thought was the main villain at the start of the game as one of the final bosses. Not many. I have a feeling Crystal Tower is going to introduce the real big bad.
As long as we are making conjectures, I have a feeling that the person that guides you around Thanahal is going to end up being a bad guy. FF likes making once friends into the enemies, because betrayal gives such a guttural emotional response.
So how many dungeons is this total in the game? How many raids will be in the game?
I realize there are 3 different "versions" of dungeons: light party, big party, and alliance party. 4,8,24 respectively. But are there different dungeons for each sized party? Or will every dungeon be runnable with every size party?
Can somebody provide this information? I'm a tad confused on it. Thanks!

I think Yoshi-P said at launch there were 30 or 40 dungeons . Adding Crystal tower later and tGLoB later also

That's counting hard mode dungeons as seperate, which technically they are cause they have different bosses and different layouts. It seems to me that there is a new dungeon every 3 levels, so 17 or 18. I think i read somewhere that 18 is the number of leveling dungeons. There will also probably be a few lvl 50 dungeons, and then the two raids. I wouldn't expect more than 20-25 at launch (of unique dungeons, not including the changed hardmode ones).

I didn't mean that I expected him to be the main villian, but they've certainly been setting him up from the lore of both 1.0 and 2.0 to be a major confrontation.
I was under the impression that Crystal Tower was before of simultaneous with Bahamut's Labyrinth in terms of narrative order, even if BL is now an 8 man...so whatever is in CT wouldn't be the 'big bad'. But there is probably some other force behind all that.
[Spoilers]
I'm thinking it is whatever force the Ascians and the beastmen they teach keep calling upon (besides the primals - the whole 'Mournful voice of creation', etc.) indicates the BIG big bad, since its been hinted that the Ascians helped orchestrate pretty much all the conflict in Eorzea that's been going on, including even the Catacylsm, but it'll be awhile before we see that revealed...some people are saying CT is going to feature Cloud of Darkness from FF3, and I guess that could be it, but I'm thinking it'll be something bigger still...

I really can't wait for Saturday.
