Lol just realised how one missing , can completely change the meaning of a sentence in my post I meant "Oh yeah I forgot about that, crap" not "Oh yeah I forgot about that crap"
I was not calling camping fates crappy lol it was actually my fastest exp behind running Haukke Manor in phase 3. Also in instances like the area I was speaking of camping in a single spot where a fate happens probably isn't the best idea that region I was mentioning was literally crazy for fates with probably 8 or more that could happen all within a minute of each other and the whole beta I never saw less than 2 fates in that area at once and when one ended another always popped up a minute later it also had two towns with Crystals on the North End and South End of the region so again the fates were literally never over a minute away.

No mob drops equipable gear. Only way to get gear are from quest rewards, crafting or chests; and chests are only at the end of dungeons or raids.
Well with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the absolute answer is: NEITHER!!!!
Let's review as to why this is the case....
Let's start with Questing. Questing, for the Most Part in Final Fantasy XIV can only get you so far. While you will be easily capable of leveling your main class through Story Progression Quests all the way to max level alone -- don't instantly assume this is the best method of leveling. Just because it gets one class to max level doesn't mean you're done.
Max Level & Classes: This game has 8 Combat Classes and even more Crafting & Gathering Classes. There are 9 Jobs. Each Job will draw from at least 4 other Classes -- not including the craft classes which you need to expensive gear repair. So you're to have to level up at least 6 Classes for your 1 Job.
Quests Run Out: In this game, forget the whole mindset of "Make a new class means making a new character", yeah that's not how Final Fantasy MMOs work. One character is designed to do everything and if you don't follow that outline you're only doing yourself harm. Eventually there will be no more quests to do, but this doesn't mean you'll be doing grinds.
Grinding? Traditional Grinding means mindlessly killing trash monsters over and over to gain exp. While you gain exp from monsters, you're not suppose to be leveling off of these alone. There is a new type of grinding, but you'll have a lot of options at your disposal when leveling up.
Once you've exhausted Story Lines and Quests, you then do other things like Guildhests, Dungeons, and Hunter's Log.
After you're done with those. You do Levequests (once you've saved up 100 allowance points) and burn through those. This includes Grand Company Leves.
After you've exhausted that avenue, you focus on FATEs and Primals.
After you've exhausted that avenue you should be 50 in every combat class.

Actually chain mob grinding > focusing on fates/leves/hunting log/quests/guildhests. The only thing that competes with exp/hr with chaining mobs is running dungeons repeatedly with the same dungeon group over and over but each person in the group has to be on top of their shit and you can't have slackers else the run slows down and you woulda been better off in an all dps chain party(not necessarily all dps classes, but just everyone dpsing the mobs down, with a heal being tossed once in awhile).
This is just looking at it from a exp/hr basis. Yes, you'll typically want to keep current with your hunting log, and do guildhests every 5 levels just once for the completion bonus but yea, fates are shit exp when you compare it to chaining mobs actually.

I'm going to have to correct you on this one and recommend you reconsider your point of view on this subject. As someone who has high levels currently in the game, several 50s and performed very well in several Beta Testers (got max level in all classes each phase). I can assure you that FATEs are not shit exp. On the contrary, they are in fact the best method of leveling up in the game. You just need a Mount first in order to make use of them. Once you have a mount and you know how to properly juggle them (memorize their pattern) you can level stupid-fast.
Example: On Sunday I leveled my Lancer from 1 to 20 in 3.5 hours on FATES alone.
Thanks for some of the responses. And to those trying to push their gaming agenda on what you think i "SHOULD" be doing? Please stop trying to control others on how you think the game should be played.
Now the question comes up.. If my friend plays a class that doesn't start in the same city. How do we join up? I mean... if being in party helps level faster, we can't do that , until we can meet up.Anyway to meet up before level 10 or 15?
you ask people to tell you if grinding or questing is better, then turn around and say some were trying to push their gaiming agenda on you telling you what you should be doing....i dont even
What are you talking about? It was a simple question of what is more efficient. Not what is fun to someone in particular. How did my question confuse you? Seems pretty straight forward. I asked for information and i've gotten some good responses. And i also got some responses trying to tell me what i should be doing for fun/ I'm a min/maxer i ain't got time to read the quests....

No...not at all. Fates do not compare when you have a good group chaining mobs together. In the time it takes most of the fates to finish(especially the boss mob ones) you would have gotten at least 1.5x the lump sum exp by just ignoring it and continuing to chain mobs.
The only reason people do fates while chaining mobs is killing the same mob just repeatedly over and over gets boring so it gives you a little relief from that and people like gaining that huge lump sum of exp vs large amounts of lower exp.
I'll take you at your word for it(though deep down i call complete and utter bullshit on you leveling 1-20 in 3.5 hours on JUST fates alone) i've made similiar times with a 4man party chaining mobs 3+ levels than we were i didn't time it exactly but i know it was around 3 hours if not under as i experienced error 3102 early on and couldn't play until servers came back up for us at 3am last day and i managed to max another 3 classes from 1-20 in that time frame before open beta closed.

how did you get gear?
in his defense, you really can get to 20 easily without getting gear upgrades because the meager gear upgrades you get don't really start giving you nice bonuses till lvl 15-20 gear anyway. but i still call bullshit on that 3.5 hour figure on fates alone but i digress.

I'm about to blow your mind Sephiroso.
Who said you had to wait until the FATE is finished?
You know you can particulate a little bit, then leave the FATE and go to another? As long as you remain in the zone you will earn full credit for FATEs you've left. That is along as you've managed to particulate early in the FATE. Arriving late beyond the 75% mark will never merit you a Gold. But if you arrive with 25% Complete and stay just beyond the 50% mark, you can run to a new FATE and get full credit for the old one while on the way to the new one.
If you're staying for the full duration of the FATE, I can see why you think me getting from 1 to 20 in 3.5 hours is bullshit.
Further note: In the 3.5 Hours I was using 1 to 20 gear already in my Armory. I never returned to town. I never turned in another quest. I just literally spammed FATEs for 3.5 hours and did nothing else.

Ok, you got me there, while i knew you didn't have to stay 100% of the time, thats usually what people tend to do(at least on the waves and waves of smaller enemies that you can chain on during a fate so there's no reason to move on to a different one) but regardless, it still takes time to get enough credit to gold medal a fate. And for particular ones like Boss fate, have to be careful to not leave too soon else you end up placing silver.
And this is significantly harder to do for caster classes which i think you should add as an addendum due to alot of the times by the time you finish casting a spell mob is dead and dots get like 2 ticks and mob is dead.

Nope. You build yourself for FATE Burning if you're a Caster class. You use a different mindset entirely. Don't go in expecting to kill anything, or else you'll never get exp. You go in armed with two or three things, depending on your class and the FATE itself.
Casters need to use:
Instant Cast Spells on Monsters, these are mainly DOTs like Aero and Bio.
Heals. Lots and lots of heals. Focus on healing people doing the FATE, that'll net you more exp than killing monsters.
AoE. If you're a Black Mage/Thaum just spam Blizzard II and Fire II. The end.
I would say questing the primary class. For other classes you will find yourself Quest starved (at least by the 3-4th, because you consumed so much content in the various start areas. At this point you can fill in some XP holes with Leves as others have mentioned.
I am not sure if this was mentioned yet, but grinding isn't so bad especially when you factor in the Hunting Log which is individual class specific. This provide some pretty hefty XP bonuses once you complete the particulars of the log, whether it is simply "kill X amount of a type" or some of the more advanced hunting log.
Best opportunity is when your quest calls for a mob that is in your hunting log and a fate pops with the same situation, stack stack stack!
Dungeons are great XP too... The main issue here is if you plan on maining a DPS class expect LONNNNNNNNNNNNNG queue times... so be sure to pack a lunch and be ready to grind and fate waiting for your queue to pop.
I have 50s already. I leveled up my Archer before I did my lancer, which required I gear it up. This too much longer than 3.5 hours to say the least, hehe. You could purchase all of your gear from players via the Market Boards if you so desire, but I earned those equips. So when I leveled up my Lancer I just tossed in all of the Archer gear I earned from leveling Archer to 1 to 20. I just purchased all of my Lances on the Market Board before I began Fate Burning -- they were dirt cheap on the Market. Level 16+ lances were being sold for like 100 to 1000 gil depending on the seller.

nah just got crafting mats, didn't get 1 single weapon/armor/item drop aside from crafting mats. i think thats because of this games crafting system. i don't think armor/weapons/items will drop period outside of dungeons/raids.
I got a random pink helm drop for level 15 pld/gld/war/mrd before i ever did any instances, not sure what dropped it, just noticed it in my bags at some point... The way the auto loot system works when you are solo makes it easy to overlook when items do drop. But that was the only wearable item i've gotten outside of dungeons/quest rewards so it must be very very rare. I got to 20 marauder, 20 lancer, 15 pug,15 glad, 12 conj and 6 archer in the open beta and that was the only item drop.

you are simply mistaken. you either got it from a leve chest, or dungeon despite thinking you got it before you ever did a dungeon. or quest reward. you did not get it from a mob.
FFXIV:ARR has so much in the game you should really try to enjoy it. Read the story the devs created for you. Try some crafting and see what you think. Why do you want to "level efficiently?"
Nicely stated, but has nothing to do with the OP's question.
Funny how in every thread in every MMO about hurrying the leveling process, there is always someone stating..."Why do that? Stop and smell the roses."

I know for a fact it was before a i did any dungeons... I logged in and checked my items and there it was... But anyway... maybe i'm wrong or maybe they just have like a .000001 chance of item drops who knows, time will tell.

What are you basing your conclusion on? Do you have any real facts saying 100% mobs will not drop wearable items out side of those said scenarios? Just because you have not seen it happen does not mean it can't. Counting on it for gear upgrades would not be realistic though for sure... But this is a pretty pointless argument anyhow... but if you have some facts to share that would be nice to see(Links to dev posts and what not).

Oh glorious day! What a question to ask.
Is GRINDING efficient or is QUESTING the best?
Well with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the absolute answer is: NEITHER!!!!
Let's review as to why this is the case....
also leve chests.

What are you talking about? It was a simple question of what is more efficient. Not what is fun to someone in particular. How did my question confuse you? Seems pretty straight forward. I asked for information and i've gotten some good responses. And i also got some responses trying to tell me what i should be doing for fun/ I'm a min/maxer i ain't got time to read the quests....
heh

What are your other Hobbies?
Gaming is Dirt Cheap compared to this...

Nicely stated, but has nothing to do with the OP's question.
Funny how in every thread in every MMO about hurrying the leveling process, there is always someone stating..."Why do that? Stop and smell the roses."
I know for a fact it was before a i did any dungeons... And i only did 3 leve (planned on saving them so when i get a grand company i can do all the hunting log leve rare spawns) and never saw any chests. I logged in and checked my items and there it was... I really have no idea how i got it, but i know it wasn't from a dungeon and I don't see how it could have been for a leve if i never opened a chest during the 3 i did. But anyway... maybe i'm wrong or maybe they just have like a .000001 chance of item drops who knows, time will tell.
then you received it from some kind of bug. it didn't come from any mob in the overworld.
Be the Ultimate Ninja! Play Billy Vs. SNAKEMAN today!
Okay...lets ask everyone else. Did anyone receive a gear drop from mobs in the open world. Not talking about from dungeons. Just out in the open world.
