See i look at your list and all i see is a ton of great tools from making the world seem more alive. Hell alot of that can really play a huge roll in RP.
Now i understand, its an MMO and its about the story and the quests and dungeons.
Well lets take into consideration that its square enix were talking about. They make THE greatest stories of all time, but the one story they could never create is yours. So for the Roleplaying community this stuff gives us more means to create our characters personality.
Also when you run around the story revolves around you be the hero. So when you run by a river with a few players fishing you pay no mind but really those players just added life to a possibly empty game. Take wow for example. Their lands are always dreary and life less. But Final fantasy 14 with the extra things you can do, it gives it life, and a beauty that no other MMO can match.
I get you may not care but next time you play, take time to watch your enviroment and try to imagine it without the players and NPCs doing their little things.
YES. FISHINNGNGNGNGNGNGNG.
Tomorrow can't come soon enough.

Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world."

I am not a fan of this game, and not interested in most of those features as i am one of those people that want their characters to feel like epic heroes..
but not having things like this is such a fail, because not having them turns every virtual world inttoo a simple game..
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
this is what i meant in my post exactly.
The game makes you the hero and all the other players are just pawns or other small time adventurers in perspective. So all these things when you walk around and you seem them happening, its like walking through a market in the downtown area and watching the store owners hand crafting some of their wares.
Fishing and sitting I have not been able to properly do in an mmo since WoW...
Strange. There may be other games that have those features but I just didn't play them it seems.
LOL!!!
You kinda missed the point of what they were trying to say, its not like they don't like them, it is what one would normally think would not be interesting in a game.
Hope that made sense! :S
Yup, it's crap like this that keeps me playing and paying a sub for years.
Did it in SWG and Lotro and I'll be doing it in FFXIV with great pleasure
TYVM SE !
How are those things useless in what's supposed to be an RPG?
What I consider useless is grinding for gear only to have it become obsolete in a few patches. Or repeating content ad nauseum just to be able to progress to harder content to repeat everything all over again.
Come to think of it. It's the little things in WoW that kept me playing for so long. I spent so many hours fishing and RPing
Edit: I know, I know, it's sarcasm. I'm not attacking the OP.
In a corner of Gridania there is a playground with stuff you can jump onto and a curved railing that you can balance on. Now that is useless, and I love it!!
During developement all games are sandboxes. At release they all become theme parks.

Chocobos (Companions) have a leveling system where u can choose their skills.. in a future not only will be chocobo.. Magitek armor is too planned to serve as Companion.
For now we know there are 3 branches to "level up" your companion. Tank, healer and DPS
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not... but the chocobos don't battle each other, you use them in regular combat as combat pets. They gain xp, level as a player does and have skill trees and roles.
With regards to the OP; I've always felt it was the fluff of an MMO that actually made it an immersive world and not just a combat simulator. When all a game has is combat it gets stale very quickly, but when players have other options for fun things to do and mess around with it keeps the game fresh and interesting for far far longer.
Probably because well end-game has a lot of waiting :P. So without the fluff you sit in a city doing jack. Thus you get bored.
It's nice to see a game take a little extra effort in the small things beyond: combat, voice overs, over-emphasis on raiding as end-game, and excessive use of pop-culture references to add "flavor" to horrible quest text.
I'm actually looking forward to playing. Sure, it's themepark, but at least it is something different than that other game.
Raquelis in various games

Agreed.
That's a slightly different matter. The fluff I was referring to was small immersive things like being able to sit on chairs and such. I don't think that would make much difference if someone was sitting around bored waiting for a raid. What you're referring to is the choice of different activities which is a different. It just so happens that ARR has loads of stuff on offer besides raiding and it's one of the things that makes the game stand out so much.
When you play WoW, endgame raiding is pretty much all you can do of any consequence at the level cap, and thus it's all anyone does. I believe it's known as the 'raid or die' mentality now.
When a game offers other things to do besides raiding (such as fully customisable housing, in-depth crafting, fishing, chocobo breeding, etc.) you will have a lot of players opt to do those activities instead of raiding, not just to kill time before a raid. It was WoW that started the trend of raiding being the only option at endgame. Before that games offered many other things you could do instead. It's nice to see FFXIV reviving that to some extent.
