GW2 worried about FFXIV AAR launch?

I just saw an add for GW2 offering free trial for new players Aug. 23-25. Interesting timing seeing that FFXIV ARR launches on the 27th with early access starting the 24th.

Are the peeps at ArenaNet concerned with the popularity of SE's latest mmo? Seeing that FFXIV is the only major mmo launching anytime soon maybe GW2 wants to pad the loss of some of their players with new members.

It is not a coincidence, no. Arenanet knows what they are doing and of course they are keeping eye on other themepark releases.

I doubt it.  If you played them both the only competing notion they have is that they're MMOs.  Beyond that they're extremely different.  Their probably just seeing box sales dropping and since it's B2P this can't happen.

I doubt it, 5.4 for wow was supposed to happen on the 27th as well, but they decide to postpone it.

Going alone the same lines I'd come up with something like, wow thinks XIV is zero threat, so delays patch?

    O_O

XIV is closer to wow than gw2 anyway.

I dont see why they would be... its not like GW2 is flying off the shelves anymore and theyre B2P. I havent played GW2 for almost a year and I doubt it matters.

Siege of Orgrimmar was suppose to start 27th too.irrelevant(unless you think they changed the date cause they were afraid of FF which i doubt).the free trial is because we are near the first year anniversary mostly..also its that time of year again when games get more active

    my top MMOs: UO,DAOC,WoW,GW2

most of my posts are just my opinions they are not facts,it is the same for you too.

...and is it just coincidence that LotRO all of a sudden now has a Welcome Home Weekend going granting +100% xp?

    Noooo, it's pure coincidence !

Why would the launch of the first AAA MMORPG since GW2 be cause for concern ? Just because MMORPG fans haven't had anything new and shiny to get their teeth into for the last year, doesn't mean they'll all flock to the next "big" release. Does it ?

Actually, the GW2 promo is most likely due to it being the first anniversary of the their launch.

Yes, because your opinion is the end all be all of a game success.  I'm not saying mine is but really?

Games are like music.  I like most but can't stand country.  While my brother can only seem to listen to screemo, rock, and metal.

Obviously didn't see or play the original FFXIV, and has not played ARR. Its ok though, I would rather have the least amount of trolls in my games as possible ^_^

A lot of people actually go outside and do other things besides gaming in the summer,  what a crazy concept.

That being said, the end of summer is the time when many people start getting back into gaming mode which is why we're seeing these types of incentives / offers.

Happens every year around this time.

LOL. Someone clearly never played 1.0 then played ARR then. Also... My milk expires on the 27th, too. Do you think Walmart is worried about FFXIV:ARR as well? We may be on to something here..

With its payment model GW2 is not interested in keeping players, its more interested in keeping players returning to their game in time to buy expansion packs or just to spend new money.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Any time an AAA release comes out, other big MMORPGs are going to take notice and act accordingly.

Why wouldn't they?   Obviously every time one comes out, SOME players are going to leave to go check it out.   To not try to minimize that, try to keep people in your game as well, or get new players in exchange, would be very foolish.

It's not some admission of doom (Oh no FF 14 is coming out, our game is screwed!), just the company trying to maximize profits.

Often we don't seem like MMO fans. More like MMO devotees. There can only be one. image

GW2 is still raking in mad profit and there is a whole slew of improvements coming.

Anyways it's apples and oranges.  Name on feature or mechanic that GW2 and ARR share.  WoW or Rift would be more worried than GW2 as their mechanics are about identical.  And does ARR even have PvP which is a key feature for GW2?

GW2 is meant to be picked up and put down.  And really summer is ending and people are getting ready for the year with school and work, prime time to offer trials to catch people's attention.

And what loss would GW2 have?  The game isn't sub based and people are notorious of trying games out for a while and then returning to their earlier game.  If someone is playing GW2 at this point I doubt they'll stay in ARR.  At least not more than the normal attrition rate.

Anyone who has taken(wasted) their time to reach end game knows GW2 is a failed game. Both WvW and PvE aspects are a mess.  At this point they are just scrambling to salvage what they can. They were trying so hard to make the next big CPL game they messed up the basics on why people play mmo's.
