Seeing the forms fill up with P2P vs F2P or new game reviews arguing this for that. Could it be that "MMO's" are returning to the niche games it used to be at least traditional mmo's?
Now that wow is slowing down and people are looking down the road we see arguments on how either "Everything needs to change" from pay model to no trinity basically everything. To more traditional players that don't see the need for such radical changes.
I believe there is room for both the traditional MMO and newer style MMO's but I don't think they are the same games. A lot of people don't like the traditional MMO's.. and will probably go back where they came from to niche games. Traditional MMO's require a lot of time and patience and were not easy games to play.
I for one look forward to both types of games. I just hope the tears of the children don't forever drown the traditional MMO

I will also add that there will be the split between "proper" MMOs, perhaps niche, and online games that have some MMO features.
MOBA is such a first split with huge success. Games like Destiny and Division will further blur the like. Marvel Heroes kind of merge ARPG and MMO too.

Try not to get lost in the rhetoric you will live longer.
"trolling" is in the eye of the beholder, not unlike what a good MMO is.
I suspect you think i am trolling whenever you don't like my opinion.
Everything is rhetoric really... specially when talking is involved.
Anyways, MMOs are not splitting... they are evolving. This evolution is influenced by a number of things: how much cash a company can make, what gamer's moods are regarding how they are going to dish out payments, what gamestyles are in or out at the moment.
People are fickle, and they change their minds on a dime. One day, something is popular, the next they take a radical turn.
You just have to remember this: as long as there is a way for a company to make money off clients, that model will exist and thrive, even if it is called "Niche".
F2P is not "more popular" than P2P, it just has no entry fee, so people can start playing whatever F2P game they want, and even make multiple account. When you look at the monthly retention times, while a F2P game will claim to have millions of accounts, those people will not stay in the game for any relatively long period of time (with some exceptions), while for subscription based games, as long as they are paying, they are playing and some of these subscription based games have hundreds of thousands of subscribers that stay month to month and year to year.
I agree... that is how many people view trolling today. Personally, I enjoy well thought out posts even when I don't agree with what they have said, and I only claim someone is a troll when they post an inflammatory statement with nothing substantial to back it up.
Sometimes change is just change not Evolution. MMO's are changing I agree, getting to max level in 1 week is something new in mmo's to say that's evolution I don't know about that.
Devolving into massive multiplayer hack and slash is more what I see. RPG's are large complex games at least the ones I enjoy.
I am a late bloomer to MMORPG games. I tried Anarchy Online back in the day but never seriously played a MMO until Rift came out.
It is interesting that MMO games seem to have suffered from copy cat syndrome more than other genres. That said, I am interested to see where they go. I am starting to see a subtle push back against the so-called "Casualization" of the genre. AAA sub-based games in a ocean of F2P, F2P conversions and B2P.
It is an interesting time. Maybe the divide may be good for a slightly stagnant part of the video game industry.
It is more like small group hack & slash than massive MP hack & slash.
Here is a problem. You act as if once you log in and create your character then POOF! You are max level in a "week". That's BS. That is all on the shoulders of the person playing. And that all stems from the community that has evolved in the past several years. Having to always be the best or have the best items or be the first to get this or accomplish that. None of that is the fault of the game, it is the fault of the player and I wish people would admit it instead of blaming the game. That blame on the game a lot of times comes from the mere fact that a person doesn't like whatever game it is they are crying about. You can post on here and tell me I am wrong, we know the truth of it.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Moreover, the one-week max level thingie is a huge exaggeration. I have yet to play a MMMO that most players can do that. Sure, if someone spends night and day, it may be possible.
But certainly any reasonable player won't be able to to do that. I know i cannot.
And why is people blaming anyone? If players want faster leveling and enjoy that, devs should give it to them. There is no sacred rules in entertainment. There is only preferences. Sure those who don't like it feel bad .. but hey ... vote more with your wallet and may be the market will grant you what you want.
