I'm pretty relaxed when it comes to maintenance.  They made some mistakes, blah blah blah.  What is blowing my mind is how they just added a new Twitter feed to get information out due to the server overload, but all the information is linked back to their damn overloaded website!

"We know you can't get onto the website due to insane traffic, so here's a feed to tell you we have information updates that you can't actually get to."

/facepalm

Yannow, after reading the thread title I started to post some kinna chiding answer for using such a cliche'd title name...but after reading the post, I actually don't think it could have been chosen much better.  =P

I just got up, I take it the EA is an overwhelming success...with emphasis on the 'overwhelming' part?

http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/news/ works perfectly fine. Also just open up the launcher.

Yeah, this is definitely a good news/bad news problem.

Who Cares, get it fixed now instead of putting it off. When WoW released servers went down after 10hours and we down 2 full days. A couple hours here and there isn't a big deal.

It went smooth for a little bit, but they didn't account for so much traffic.  This really should have been the easiest stage to prepare for because you have access to hard pre-order numbers.  The JP servers haven't had any issues, but having popped on their servers, there is far less congestion from players.  The rage on the official forums made me giggle.  It has been an interesting launch, that is for sure.

I don't agree with using WoW's 2004's release as an excuse. Its success was unprecedented and we've yet to see such an MMO simply explode.

So current crop MMOs have no excuse. With all the betas and blah blah, they should know better by now.

Nah, its not a big deal.  It is still hillarious that they chose to link the already WAAAAAAY over-loaded website forums for information in the name of "communication".  They've since added an actual update on their Twitter.

I don't understand that logic though... how many successful products were launched by being "not as bad" as a competitors from a decade ago?  :)

I think the issue is more and more people keep jumping on the FFXIV bandwagon.  Every beta test had more people singing its praises.  And, now the people who didn't buy it or try it are buying it too since their friends are yelling to get on.  And, well those who waited for things to settle down are now trying to get on.  While those who were on at the start are most likely still on (or were before servers were shut down).

Edit: Also Yoshi-P said the NA/EU numbers were actually greater than the japanese which was probably a surprise for them.

I'm just blown away that a single person on the planet actually chose a pic of Jon Fitch as their avatar.

    You stay sassy!

you know, people have to remember that this is a game. it is a software tied to hardware and something is going to break if it gets overloaded. people make mistakes, software gets bugs in it, and hardware goes out. so what do they do, someone fixes the problems.

It's almost prime time, I am hoping for the US servers to be back up soon.

    Momo sucks, I have proof.

Thats no surprise to them, the US gaming economy & community is 100x bigger than that of the Japanese one!  Its fact actually...

Yeah, in the early 00's Japan went from having 50% of the world market share demand for video games down to 10%, with NA accounting for the highest demand.  As a software engineer (and Jon Fitch fan) myself, there are numerous things they could have done to accomodate population surges from launch.  At the absolute minimum, there could be a soft queue for instance creation.  From SE's past though, they've always been a little bit more with it for the Japanese side of the ventures.

If it was a technical glitch, I think I'd be more inclined to shrug it off.  The major issue, as they've stated, is too much traffic.  That is on them.  Either way, I've got a pizza, Firefly bluray, and a bedpan.  I ain't sweating it.

The few launches I've ever been in, most of them had this kind of early-server access problem.  I wonder if part of it isn't (at least for NA) the sheer failure of our broadband system compared to Japan's.

I do know that right before I went to bed last night/this morning that I got right through at 15 minutes after launch (5:15 EST US) and my best friend only  had to relaunch his browser once, then he got right through.  I was surprised -anyone- was getting through!  Yet there were several people on Siren over the next hour.  We were almost concerned that there didn't seem to be any problems lol.  I just hope people are rolling on Siren now...or rather, when they get a chance to log in!  I think I'll wait a few hours and play some FFXIII -- I really need to finish beating that game (and the one after it) now that Lightning Returns has caught my attention.

Put some rhinestones on that bed pan and deck it out! If anything can use a little bling it's a bed pan.

Agreed!  I'm sure my roommates will love me belting out Glen Campbell's classic: "Like a Rhinestone Fanboy".

It's hard to account for pre-order numbers when building server structure. People have been consistently 'pre-ordering' all the way up to the night before release. Myself included.
