Chatting style games?

Hi, I'm looking for a game where you can easily talk to people. Like a chatroom with a gaming option. In the past I have played games like Furcadia, Tibia, Runescape, and Thang. All of which are free games, and of which I have abused that free feature. Runescape and Thang seemed quite fun when you start out, because of the newness, but the only 2 games I seem to just keep going back to are Furcadia and Tibia. Also games where roleplay is optional, but not totally non existent or forced upon. It would be great of the game is free, but I guess I wouldn't mind paying a small sum of money. I appreciate your responces. :)

    Any game that is focused on guilds or raiding should meet those desires.  (EQ, EQ2, WoW, GW, AC, DAoC...and so on)

    Simply because they need others players in big numbers, peoples will tend to be friendlier, althought it is often a facade.

    Truthfully I never really activly participated in a guild before, if you know the style of tibia then you should know it is a guild based game and I have a lvl 78 paladin there and even with the many invitations to join guilds, I turned them all down. But now I do realize how necessary a guild is, to actually enjoy a mmorpg. But I also do enjoy being able to walk around, meet random people, maybe even make good online friends with. Lol, I must sound dull, wanting a game to work double as my social life. Thanks for answering, and I'm currently researching wow, and am going to write and give a speech describing mmorpgs.

    Aonfalye,

    I would have to respectively disagree. I interpreted the post as a MMOG type game that is more social based i.e. chatting, but has a small gaming aspect. All of the above, whilst social in that grouping is encouraged, are strictly achievement based games, with a small chat element.

    Dependent on the poster's original intent, my interpretation would be:

    * Second Life
    * There

    But avoid TSO [The Sims Online] because it's forced socialization i.e. you have to play/RP in the manner that EA intended. Odd, because if you look in the 'Released Games' section, TSO is listed but Second Life or There are not listed? What gives?

    I currently do not play any MMOGs at present, and wouldn't particularly play a chat based MMOG. Just interested to see why TSO is listed but the other alternatives are not. Is the list based on subscriber numbers? That would be my guess.

    Second Life is just about as social a game as you will find, Some folk hire chars to spy on their partners ingame in case they are having a virtual affair or something ::::18:: while others enjoy aspects of life that in the real world for whatever reason they cannot.

    If you want to walk around and chat I think SL is the "game" for you.

    Not really sure what a MMOG type game is, and as it says I am really am a novice. But I would enjoy a fantesy type genre instead of a real life one. I guess if I did want a real life one, I would go out and experiance real life.(I'm not that hopless irl :p) But I just know I enjoy a game where I can talk about what I do with others, even though second life does sound like a good transition game between online and rl, I think I might want to stick to the fantesy type genre where the socializing is as little as a facade as possible. I guess I really do not know what I want, lol. Fantesy is fun, but the common betrayal of friends, and the people who "use" others just to help their own character get stronger really does get to me. I wonder if there is a Fantesy type game where that doesn't exist..

    This happens in ALL games based on achievement i.e. item acquisition, currency acquisition. It's not confined to the fantasy genre. You will even find powergaming (to a lesser extent) in social MMOGs such as SL or There - it does exist but in a different form. Rather than item acquisition, you will have politics, cliques, people with their own agenda, etc. The same motivations exist, but the form merely differs.

    Don't let this put you off playing. It's part of the human condition, so I see no valid reason why it should suddenly 'disappear' on-line.

    Y'know what, with the exception of a lowbie Ranger called 'Gwoin' on Ayonae Ro, I cannot remember the names of those few players who irritated me. Gwoin, I ripped a new one on the server board, so that's the only reason why I remembered him (and that I owe him a virtual ass kicking).

    Piece of advice: decide why you are playing a MMOG. Look at your criteria, then choose the game that fits your criteria. Stop getting wrapped up in the genre if there are no games within that genre that fit your criteria. The traditional MMOGs - EQ, WoW, etc - are all achievement based - item, level, money acquisition - with an element of socialization through grouping. Heck! If you want to stand around and chat, then feel free to do so! You're perfectly free to do whatever you like. Up to you how you want to play the game. But do choose a game that is closely aligned to your criteria - no use playing ShadowBane if you wish to get out the old guitar, sit down and strum a few chords of "Where have all the flowers gone?".

    Your words have got me thinking, thanks riotgirl. Problem is, is my memory. I have an exceptionally good memory..it is a curse and a gift, I sometimes just wish I could forget certain things, so yea I'd get bothered by it as much as I would over someone who I loved who also cheated on me. I don't know why after 2 years of playing achievment based games that it never dawned on me that is the type of people I will find on achievment based games.(not sarcasam, really I mean it) Either everying is so clear now or I am just tired..But it is nice to start out a game with a goal in mind and leave a game with a sense of accomplishment. Ofcourse that wouldn't be really be playing for enjoyment then. I'm going to be thinking about this stuff for awhile. Thanks for all the help people. If any other games come to mind maybe like furcadia, or more on the free to play instead of pay to play side, (I really don't usually pay to play games, but I did buy a ps2 and 2 games for it, also was dumb and paid for one 3 month thing for tibia *is a cheap skate*) post them. ::::19::

    And maybe you can virtually ass kick a few people for me ::::35:: Actually probably alot of people deserv one lol.
