Some serious exaggerating, the world felt on par with any game to me and i have played a lot of games. The ONLY game world to ever feel smallish was Rift,it really stood out but in FFXIV,i could see myself getting tired of walking, that is why they have the warps.
What is funnier is you get three gorgeous large starting cities to immerse yourself in but it is not enough?LOL games like Wow start you in the middle of nowhere, very boring and non immersive.Rift started you in a warehouse and a small zone.
The only other games that do justice to starting you with immersion has been SOE games,EQ1/2 .Even worse is MANY games start everyone in the exact same spot, how is that for opening up a game world, everyone has to move through the exact same path lol.You should not be asking if a world opens up but asking if it gives you a world feeling RIGHT AWAY,to which FFXIV does that and MOST games do not.
I think Square deserves SOME credit for giving you that open feeling right away, never mind asking for it to happen later.Try going out and looking for the different tier node for mining,i doubt you will be thinking it is a fast cake walk.
I think it is no secret my fave games have been EQ2 and FFXI,both games start me in large cities,i actually feel a part of a world and i can see the effort that went into starting the games.FFXIV does a pretty darn good job of copying that trend, with it's gorgeous large cities.
Here is the REAL kicker,i read forums all the time and what the majority are talking about is INSTANCES,how is that for open world??

I don't think I've ever seen a post with more points I disagreed with. All I will respond to is the line about Large cities in FFXIV, a city can't feel all that large when you hit a loadscreen every few feet, not for me anyway.

No. It had to be kept small for PS3. Because, you know, for reasons beyond human comprehension an MORPG needs to be available for an outdated console.
There is no real exploration potential or feel to this game. Like TERA it's pretty to look at but most of the time looking is all you can do. Invisible barriers and corridors for zones and cities with every space tied to a quest and nothing much to see outside of that does give a restrictive feel.
I don't care for GW2's big picture since it's a single player game, but it does have some of the cooler zones for exploration since they're packed with stuff to see and do. This game's zones are pretty much the polar opposite.
Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.
For me the game really opened up once I unlocked the airships. After that it opened up even more when I got my chocobo. Now the game seems very spacious even though there are brief loading screens between major zones. I think you really have to unlock airships before it starts to open up. (Don't listen to anyone who hasn't experienced this yet).

I think it's important to mention that airship rides aren't like those in WOW, it's more akin to SWTOR with departing and arriving at stations through cut-scenes.

The world isn't exactly small at all, it feels small because of the zoning. I'm still finding new areas to explore and I haven't even gotten to the new area. I finally broke out of the beginner areas.
The teleportation system makes things very easy to get to contributes the feeling of smallness. There isn't much reason to avoid it. The person who said it makes you broke, I have 150k gil that says otherwise.
Just reminding you all that the space requirement for the game is 20 GB. This is already pretty massive for a game on your computer. Can you imagine how big you would need to make the file size in order to accommodate your expectations? But in any case... although you think the world is "small" it is extremely detailed, unlike other mmorpg maps which are basically just random generated terrain with very little detail. All the locales in FFXIV are carefully and painstakingly made, which definitely shows, and definitely adds to the immersion.
I personally don't feel its small. especially when I am trying to complete a portion of my grand company hunting log and I spend half an hour running around everywhere on my chocobo.
Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)
i don't think it's even going to take a couple months.
i was on the bandwagon for this game - solely because they took a failed product and turned it into something better.
Now I'm level 30 with a couple of other jobs leveled up a bit of the ways and have my choco / crafted / done 5+ dungeons, etc..
And i'm getting pretty sad. The world is tiny. So small that they had to fit half of the zone as a low level, the other as the high level counterpart.
Not only that but like someone above mentioned you can port from box cube to box cube and see the whole world in about 5 minutes or so, give or take.
The dungeons up to 30 have been way too easy. The questing has been also. The mobs to fight also.
I've heard the advance jobs are simple as hell to get.
The primal battles are simple from my level 50 guildies opinions.
Countless people are already maxed with full AF and it was released yesterday ( yes yes i know, open beta and early access)...
What happened to the world feeling so big in final fantasy games? Like taking an airship to kazham and feeling like you are on a whole new continent. Or running to jeuno without choco and it felt like hours - not to mention the other final fantasy games that took hours on end to explore.
What happened to crafting making you feel like a boss when you gained .1 out of 100 levels... The crafting on here is .. somewhat fun. But easy. Super easy. So easy people are leveling every craft to max.
What happened to having hard mobs to fight? Or AF armor taking months to get and not a matter of hours froma simple quest..
Ah - fan bois don't flame me. I'm a huge FF fanboi. And I will continue playing this because I love FF. But damn am i a sad panda right now after reflecting on the game.
I agree with everything you said except for this line about crafting. I been doing some crafting and hunting. I have 1 craft at level 20 and it is slowing down. Will I eventually level other crafts yes but it really is a grind for crafting.
It is pretty small, really. I decided to see if I could run from Gridania to Ul'-dah, and it's no problem. Just takes a few minutes. But there is quite a bit to do in each zone, and once the beginning crush of players tapers off, these zones will feel larger with fewer people in them.
But, not the best game for explorers. There's a lot of fencing going on with mountains, etc, and plenty of invisible walls.
It is "small" in design but jampacked with content and if one doesn't teleport everywhere it feels quite large when in the thick of a zone. Secondly, the game is going to grow and add more real estate and I can't wait. The dungeons are the best I've ever played in an MMO and I don't feel like I'm stuck doing just one thing to level, I have sooooo many options which in itself makes the "world" feel bigger and more like a world.
Maybe that's why it doesn't feel small to me. I never use the teleport feature :P. Except return. Mainly because I feel like it's such a gil sink though.

Game is fantastic.
Agreed. It does feel smaller than 1.0 but infinitely more interesting. Your first play through will feel very WoWish - that much is true. But as you level more jobs, you'll begin to open up a variety of goals and activities to accomplish (more than just achievement hunting and raiding that most games end up as)
- You'll have a variety of options for leveling (questing, levequests, behests, fates, dungeons, hunting logs, combination of all of those).
- Lots of end-game gear to acquire via all sorts of means (questing, Companies, raids, dungeons, etc...)
- Grand Company's is its own advancement system of its own (on top of leveling your classes).
So in my eyes, the game starts off as a themepark but eventually becomes a sandpark/sandbox.

Comparable to the size of say Barrens in WoW (pre-Cata) or one of the larger zones in GW2.
Load times are fast, even on PS3 I've never been upset by the load times between zones.
Exploration is more about finding the nooks and crannies in each zone, not slogging across miles of open (and mostly empty) terrain.
I remember the massive, open zones (worlds) in a game like SWG - I'd take FFXIV:ARR zone design any day.
Travel is convenient when you want it to be, but not cheap. Hoof'n it is a reasonable time investment.
Once you get airship pass the world does open up as you can visit each region at your leisure and access any class you want.
Getting quests to unlock dungeons and having to travel to a dungeon's entrance before unlocking it in the Duty Finder is a nice touch.
I was worried about content scarcity after the amount of available quests just completely fell off after around 14/15, but you get a huge chunk of EXP and story including dungeons to drive you through to 20 - lots and lots more quests open up after 19.
Hope to get my mount soon, just hit 20 last night - still have to fight Ifrit and go unlock Halatali.
So much content, so much to do in each zone and access to every class on one toon... yeah, I'd say the game opens up quite a bit once you spend some time in Eorzea.
Considering we are exploring one section of one continent out of 3 on the planet, lots and lots of room to expand and grow in future patches/expansions.
i don't think it's even going to take a couple months.

Are you serious about the AF armor? You know I was looking at the zones and thinking where have I seen ths...GW2 damn. Yeah I have this nagging feeling that I won't be playing this all that long either. My girl asked me the first night I played it waht I thought. Don't get me wrong I love FF but idk...this just seems rushed and uninspiring. 7.5 and passable. I do agree if people are already maxed level and have their mounts, AF gear already that is a problem. Some are already 30+ in my guild. It hasn't been a week and I"m not counting beta. I will keep and eye on the game. but I don't think I'll actually stick around to be subbed to it.
Kind of sad actually. I really wanted to like this game but I'm not playing another shallow MMO.
GW2, Neverwinter just can't see myself doing it again.

I have to disagree to a point on your post.
From what I played while the zones do seem a good size something feels off about them. I do like the part about finding the dungeon first before going into it. However as it stands I do not like getting in those dungeons without communication.
The questing system is weird...in a way. Its designed to level those initial classes up in every continent. Everything seems almost to easy to do. Airship, choco..although I know it costs 2k seals. Unlocking the jobs and leveling them. I think you need more skills as well.
I do like the leveling everying on one toon, but I am curious to see how that's going to work quest wise, unless they want you to leve everything. Don't get me wrong I see what you're seeing I just don't think it will be viable long term.
I think in MMOs there should be a balance between hard and easy content. I don't think this game strikes that balance quite right. Even group content seems easy. A bit to easy and that's where I see the problem. Granted people will complain about not having something now...choco mount for instance, but when you get that thing in a day or two of grinding...something is off. Wow seems to level at a slower pace...or perhaps more meaningful pace...idk.
This game kind of reminds me of GW2. A bit to shallow in the combat and group environment. though I do like the group content options.

After reading every reply and not being that guy that keeps shooting down points - lol...
As far as everyone saying they love how small the zones are and detailed because it feels wholey and you always see people -
yeah, that'd be awesome if it wasn't literally 150+ people in a single fate.
i did a fate last night for the first time with just like a group of 5-10 and that was HOW IT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE DONE.
It felt right, i was immersed. I could actually see the boss. The Area around him. The NPCs helping out. It made it so RPish
my point being on the small map size with large population - go live in california during rush hour traffic.
then go to tennessee and hike the mountains with a group of people and the plains.
a good thing i've been reading.. after googling high end and talking to my guildies.
seems the game was made for high end. they kinda gave us a pre-game and made the end-game the game.
i hope for once this is true. and i hope there is a lot of content.
so far only two 24 man raids. i can't see how that's focusing their efforts on end-game.
well i can, they have 3 major zones for 1-50, then 2 zones for 60. i guess that would mean they focus efforts to end-game in terms of mathematics.
sorry for sarcasm. but i really do hope end-game is where it's at.
