Well, this thread isn't a review (s'pose you could take it that way though), nor is it an indication of a bad or good game. Look elsewhere. What it is a summice summary of the things I liked, the things I disliked. It's also a list of some thing I have question about, many of them pertaining to leveling.
First off, some backround. My first game was FFXI, hated it. It also double charged me my first.. and last (or so I thought).. month, due to me logging in on my computer and my friends computer, putting me in debt when I had no access to money. Bad scenario, left me hating FFXI for quite some time. Started playing WoW, made it to 55, got bored, quit. Started playing City of Heroes. My on and off again love till it.. well.. closed down. During that time I played WoW some more, bought FFXI again... and again actually (because of their stupid playonline system and ridiculous login shit, I'd always need a new account). After these, I drifted from one mmo to the next, playing well.. almost every one that I'd heard of. WoW was my mainstay mmo, peaking at Wrath. After this, the expansions just gouged my game to a point where I'd play to level, maybe a little after, but never anywhere beyond that (I despise what they've done to dungeons lately). CoH and FFXI I would subscribe to every few months when I got the urge.
I subscribed to FFXIV a while after it came out, once the price had dropped (my lifes full of things I should never have bought because food was more important.. heh). I liked 1.0, it was gorgeous, it was fun. It also did not last. Like past a week tops (probably more like 3 days...). Just wasn't enough there to hook me.. I guess.
So I went back to my WoW's and my then free to play CoH (which suffered a touch in the transit, of course, although free was a very nice factor when I'd only play for a week out of a month).
Ect? It basically continued that way until FFXIV 2.0 officially came out.
I immediately made my character, and the amount of options for this type of game were staggering (some among you will laugh, your used to Skyrim type creations now, where each cheekbone can be almost infinitely dialed to your desire). Still, even though there were 4-8 options for everything, more options could be changed than most mmos. And then I entered the game.
Graphics? Look just as good as I recall. Better in fact, because in the interim I've been able to upgrade my video card (yet another purchase that probably shouldn't have been made, but whats life anyway, plus my computer IS my life). I look gorgeous, if a male can say that about a male character... (kudos, armor designers, though you'll make me regret that praise sometimes). The world looks good, and hey I'm being guided. Nice. Standing in your theoretical skivvies in the middle of nowhere with no task isn't as rewarding as everyone makes it out to be.
Standard quests, blah blah blah (it's good text, but theres only so many times you can hear (/read) welcome to where will eventually , before it gets old). The quests, while standard beginner fare, acquant you with your starting town nicely, albeit they be boring. At somewhere beyond level three your given more free reign (in your questing ability, you could have just as easily skipped em all, headed out, and starting pounding on almost defenseless forest/wildnerness critters). But assuming you're like me, you'll generally follow the quests being handed to you. They are there because these have paltry tasks they somehow cannot do themselves. Plus, it's easy exp. Heh.
Continue these tasks for like.. ever. Until they run out.
And that's where my questions come in.
Outside of levequests, which I'll say I get an average of 4.5 tops per playtime (assuming I play all day) gives ONE class half a level, at my level (18ish) tops.... Not promising, not at all. There are other quests, but I've completed everything that's been visible for my character in all of two cities and their surrounding locales. I had attempted to save five or so quests for the gladiator I was leveling, but it turns out you can accept the quests I had accepted at level 14, but, even though they are complete, are unable to turn them in until level 17 (or 18 as some of them required) Bogus (/sadface).
The other problem I've encountered is dungeons. Not a problem in and of itself, but my main storyline quests have led me to my first dungeon (expected, of course). The problem is I've played almost 20 hours of this game solo, without any outside help, without anyone even saying hey you asshole, stop attacking me creatures. I've never been hailed, and 20 hours of a game offering you solo quests suddenly thrusting you into a hey, make friends NAO type of scenario is quite disconcerting. This is outside of the fact that I personally have serious deficiencies in making friends, seeking help, and any social situation whatsoever.
FFXI managed to avoid these.. issues, by being well.. a party game. It was possible to solo, of that I have been reassured. But I'd always required a party to do anything. The first focal point of the game was getting your subjob, and unless you wanted to wait maaany levels 'till you could achieve that soloing, a group was required. Powerleveler, whatever. Someone. The game itself made it out to be "seek a party", ie, you sought a party, you wandered in the area parties frequented, you stood there with the sign up saying "Hey, I'm just standing here, but I gots a sword!", until someone said "Hey you... get over here."
EH, I'm beginning to ramble, lose coherency, focus disappearing...
TL:DR
I'm lvl 18 Archer, 15 Gladiator. I've run out of quests. My log is finished. Actually attacking enemies has been a waste of time when they give such pitiful experience. Please tell me this game is NOT we set you up with quests, then yank the rug later on. Have fun!.....
