Well, the "innovation" for me is "no cash shop" + old school map (no effin' QUEST TRAIL).
I love the game (outside launch issues), hope it stays that way.

It's a wonderfully new, modern, yet old school kind of 'ish feeling "classic" MMO - trinity combat, forced grouping content, grind heavy, more complex crafting, promise of housing + OWPvP down the road...
It's like a 2004 MMO made with a 2013 engine + convenience features.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Your name should be GoodSpock.

Some people are going to absolutely hate this game (and do) because it is a 2004 MMO made with a 2013 engine + convenience features.
I think that is what really pulls this game apart from the pack and makes it so great.

All they need to do is reduce the GCD from 2.5s to 1(or even 1.5)s and I would be happy. ;p

What I'd really like to see is a 1999 MMO(read: DAOC) made with a 2013 engine. I tried going back and I could take everything else but not the abysmally clunky UI... Give me 2013 engine with updated graphics and responsive controls, and keep everything the same and I would be there.

Hopefully Yoshi-P gives you your wish with Frontlines. Yoshi was a big time DAOC PvP player ya know.

But I agree. Love the newer graphics with the old school feel. At first I didn't like the GCD, but as I got to playing, I dont' mind it. It contributes to the old school feel.

To me it was more a modern design (think TOR, AOC, etc), with some tidbits calling back to old ideas. The quick path to endgame ranking, fates (dynamic content), zoned off world, with some nods to SWG and the like in terms of crafting and jobs.IF it felt more "old school" I'd probably appreciate it more, as it stands, it's too close to the modern trope to really stand out on it's own, I"m hoping endgame is more fleshed out than recent entries.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing in the slightest, I can still get enjoyment out of games like this, it just saddens me they didn't go a more sandbox route; as cliche as that statement is.. I just think the more themeparkish, raid endgame defeats a big purpose for crafters, one that many love as well as is rare to find.

So nearly all other games since WoW we're all plain dull, boring, repetitive with the same old stuff by following the exact same model but all of the sudden, the Final Fantasy one is better than all the others?

Was on the fence about buying this game but BadSpock just sold me. Thank you sir!
Now I just gotta wait for SE to open up online purchases again.

Each and every game after WoW has had success and failure on their own terms - for and from their unique strengths and weaknesses. I could go on for pages about why and how each one faltered, but I won't.
FFXIV may too falter - as it too possesses a unique blend of strengths and weaknesses.
This game is a nearly perfect blend of oldschool + newschool. It's not perfect, it's not innovative, but for a lot of players it's one of the last hurrah's for a lot of older-mmorpg mechanics. It's also got a lot of the convienence that keeps newer generation MMO's going, but done in a somewhat tasteful manner as to keep the rest of us around. I'll give it some time. It's a well developed game following a brilliant classic IP. It's got all of the formula it needs.
Currently playing - FF14ARR Previous games - SWG, World of Warcraft, ShadowBane, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall, Planetside Asheron's Call, Everquest, Everquest 2, Too many.

amen to this
I totally agree . If they made old style MMOs like EQ and SWG with new graphics they would be great games.
