Hello everyone. I'm asking here to clarify whether I should give this game a chance. The ratings from users and the review by this site are not exactly 'uniform'. I played a little in the beta. To clarify: I barely got out of the starting town before beta closed.
However I weren't too impressed with the little I saw but it seems that many here love the game, so please tell me why I should try it out.
I usually play a healer in MMO's or rather, I exclusively play healers. How is the healing in this game? Is there any challenges heal wise? Can I level as a healer or do I have to play dps up until max level where I can then actually proceed to heal?

THIS.. they need to remove and redo that review.
I cant really advise anything as i really felt this game is REALLY dependant per person.. some people despise it, some people adore it.
Im.. well.. not adoring, but certainly leaning towards it since i started playing :P
Its.. an mmo .. final fantasy-style
Nothing more to be said.. its just a good-looking mmo with nice music and fun classes. The combat system is just exactly the same as most mmo's like WoW and Everquest etc. and questsystem is exactly the same as normal quests (aside from the FATE system which is like the GW2 eventsystem). Its not a flashy mmo thats just swining around with alot of flashy useless features to attract people.. its just a nice solid mmo.
Ofcourse there are some differences like being able to change class and you for example have classes that only get unlocked after training multiple classes to a certain level.
Do realise its an mmo.. meaning at release it will always be a basic platform or shell on which the full mmo will be built.
I am really enjoying it.. nice graphics, good story, it starts off easy but at the end-game and in upcoming patches alot of really difficult stuff will be added, pvp is incoming and its just overall nice to play.
I would advise either try to see if anyone you know has the game so you can try.. watch ALOT of videos or try to find a cheap copy of the normal game somewhere so that you can try it out for 30 days.. if you have the money to do that.

I agree with the poster who said enjoyment of this game really relies on the individual in question. Personally, I like the typical exaggerated FF storyline and characters, the feeling of being an adventurer and traveling all around Eorzea, and how all the classes/disciplines have much more involved stories tied to them than in most games.
I have been steadily progressing my conjurer to lvl 26 and once I hit thirty will be adding arcanist to go white mage, so I feel I can speak a bit on the game's healing, especially in dungeons. I always play healers/support in other MMOs, so here's what strikes me as immediately different. First, aggro matters. If I sit back and cast cure over and over again, I will soon have a pack of monsters swarming me. What this does is force me to be more judicious with heals. Complicating this is the relatively long cast times and cooldowns.
So, not only do I have to not overheal, I also have to have a good situational awareness, positioning, and timing to be sure my heal hits at the right time. At around lvl 20 in the main story, the dungeon difficulty will start to creep up, adding new mechanics (like poisons and specific boss tactics) that make your job more difficult and fun. Also, you can start off as conjurer with your first class and lvl it with very little problems, while having near instant queues, so if healing is your bag, I highly recommend it.
I'd be glad to answer any follow up questions you have.
