That happened to me this afternoon, my hubby got in on his first try and I spent 20+ minutes getting a greyed out start button and then the "unable to connect to NA/EU servers" - not sure why I was having such issues today, first time I've run into this issue...

that will keep happening until either SE develops an AFK timer to force log out AFK idiots or the population starts leaving the game.

I believe SE said that they will keep an eye on the log in issue and if this problem persists they would add the AFK timer....... I call BS on that. Its clearly a consistent problem, how in the seven hells can they wait to see if it persists?..... sigh..... It needs to be developed, now.

Got that a few times and just exited and went back in and it would be ok.  Or, I would just leave it sit until the CG played and it would resolve when I went back to the screen.

Definitely shaky right now, and that is before you even get to the real issues with that error number that shall not be named, but I finally got in and I love it.  Has a simplistic quest system so far and I kind of appreciate the plain-nes.  Reminds me of EQ in a way.

I woke up early to hit 1017.. so I'm wondering just how much of the East Coast is truly playing this game from 6am-10am.  It's definitely worse today.  At least I got on yesterday.  Today, the PS3 has gray start buttons, launcher failing to load 11017, and World is Full's 1017.

(shrug) Oh well... this is looking like it's scrubbed until the server update... too many people on this holiday weekend.  Funny as I had no problems up til yesterday evening.

Alot of EST. Server openings never benefit us because it's always PST based. But for logging in during congestion. We folks on the east coast are golden. I haven't logged out in about what? 3 or 4 days now. But it's not like it would even be a problem. Logging in at about 6 or 7am EST I've only hit the queue once and it was only about 43 people in it including myself. I could be nice and log off, but I don't see the point in it.

A lot of People from Europe are playing on NA servers. There are too few EU servers, so most are playing on NA servers.

6AM - 12AM to you East Coast, is 12PM to 6PM here in Europe.

The only thing they need to do for now is to server reset twice a day until they improve servers. By resetting twice a day you kick out all the AFK'ers.  It's a nice and simple solution to a real BIG annoying problem.

People still seem to think that resetting servers and kicking off a few afkers is going to solve this problem.

Check the game, most are playing, your only kicking a few off.

Oh lets not forget all the active players will then be hammering the login servers.

making an afk kicker, or resetting servers isn't going to change the fact that far too many people want to play the game, way more than they can handle.

instead of suggestion easy fixes, which seem ignorant to the real issue, and naïve in general...why don't we wait for the new servers to come online and just deal with the fact that its going to take you a bit of effort to get into the game.

I mean you might as well suggest they change the population cap on some arbitrary program which will magically make the servers able to handle more people with no negative effects.

    Few comments.

No a AFK timer is not the answer, you pay a sub fee, that is one of the perks, this is not SOE or Kings ISle booting you out every 10 minutes.

I can stay logged in FFXI 24/7 if i want and i do and i like it.

The REAL problem is not enough servers,i am sure they got a bigger response than they expected but of course not an excuse, whoever is in charge of the whole server structure FAILED and in a big way, fire him or demote him.

The good news if any?I  will go on a limb and predict a speech soon on free game time awarded for the botch up.

The key to all of this is to report your problems to Square not these forums, some devs read these forums  but i am certain not Square Enix.Enough people give feedback and voice their displeasure you will see results.

Geesh here is an idea for all youTweeters and FB users,Tweet Yoshi or post on the FB page.

You know that I know that your "facts" about who is active versus who is afk is complete BS. You are just making that up for some reason. A reason I can't seem to grasp, but you are still making it up. Go to any major hub and you will see people AFK with either "waiting for duty finder" or "watching cinematic" tags. How do I know they are afk? I take screenshots of going through the area once. I come back hours later to turn in quests and the same people are still watching the same cinematic or in duty finder. Duty finder wait might be more excusable since DPS queues are abyssmal, but they are still AFK. As a matter of fact, I was telling my gf yesterday of a guy I saw, in the same spot for 2 days, just AFK. FOR 2 DAYS. The problem is bigger than people suspect and perhaps are defending it because they are AFK themselves and would hate their simple way of bypassing the login queues destroyed.

AFK kicking needs to be in place. Even if it kicks off 100 people(which is a low estimation) it will do well. I think it should be very severe in the first few months and then taper off to a 1-2 hour AFK logout. Games with incredible populations did this at launch, or still do it, and they remain some of the best experiences in the MMO market. Rift, at launch, did AFK kicking at 10minutes of no activity. They also made the mistake of flooding the game with new servers at launch which only made things worse later with mass server consolidation(merging). World of Warcraft does it at 30minutes, I believe, still. So, don't try and justify a retarded practice because it would inconvenience you.

Yeah, I believe this is correct.  I hope it doesn't take too long.  And I hope this is all part of the expansion of the servers.

You realize you just called his stuff BS, but then put out more or less the opposite of what he said. With no real proof to back it up, either. So doesn't that mean your post would be every bit as BS as his? Where is your proof to back up what you believe is right? If you are so sure you are right then you should be able to back it up. Also should mention do you know how easy it is to get around an auto afk timer? Especially in a game that uses a game pad. All it takes is one rubberband, and I would never have to worry about an "auto kick".

From what I can gather so far:

Start button grayed out (sometimes throws 2002) -- Lobby server not responding

From there it can progress to either

Unable to update Group JP or NA/EU character list (sometimes throws 1017) -- login server for that datacenter is overwhelmed
    or
World is unavailable (always throws 1017) -- your particular server is overwhelmed

And if you win the lottery, and pass all 3 of those, you may get to either Queue (with a random chance to 1017 while you are in the queue, which means the queue server crashed while you were in it), or log straight in.

That being said, on the battle to AFK/not AFK, or to use login macros/button smashing

Neither are good: if your AFK, your eating a slot from someone else, since S/E has revealed each server only has ~5,000 active logins allowed. If your button smashing/macroing to log in, your contributing to the server congestion and effectively being part of what amounts to a giant DDOS attack.

That being said, I don't blame either crowd; they are just trying to play a game they paid for, using methods that are a) Legal and allowed for by the EULA, and b) what they have available at hand.

If S/E had handled things properly from the start; either by having enough capacity, auto-kicking, implementing a proper queue system, allowing for overflow servers, throttling or restricting repeated login attempts, caching the character/server lists client side, or any combination of various methods to reduce, enhance, and manage the traffic on their servers -- we wouldn't be looking at this problem. We may be looking at something like really long queue times, or never being on the same server as your FC mates, or some other problem, but it wouldn't be as bad as feeling totally helpless and staring at an error message with little to no feedback as to when/if you could actually play.

Yes, they are trying to fix it. Congrats. They already tried to fix it from 1.0... Don't blame the players, they aren't doing anything wrong, no matter what they are trying. If they had some foresight, used the information gathered from their beta testing (P4->EA->now, essentially nothing fixed with regard to the congestion), if they had looked around to what some industry standard solutions were (from basic queueing to AFK kicking to overflow servers), if they implemented something now in an emergency patch before their hardware is ready on Wednesday....

We're looking at a holiday weekend, just after the release, and yeah, it's not looking good. Once they get enough servers in here and online it will help, but what's looking to be more likely is enough people are going to just rage quit or be driven away by the inability to play that the problem will solve itself with or without new hardware...

I bought the game 2 days ago, i was able to play all time.

Even tho i had the same problem " star t" button wasn't there, can't load eu/na server, error1017( and more of those), i just closed the game and tried 5minutes later.

It's a fun game when u get into it.

  • RidelynnRidelynn Member EpicPosts: 7,383

One really simply method they could do with no code changes would be to just reboot the servers once or twice a day until they get a handle on the situation...
