The Secret World is a bit different than most MMO's, a lot of the quests are really well designed, some of them really show off Funcom's adventure puzzle game past and unless you are the type of person who keeps a solution page opened up on your tablet while you try and work your way through Myst then having the answer to a puzzle you have not even seen before in general chat can be a bit of an annoyance.

They really should have seen that one coming and lowered the radius of general chat, or just made it only work in the teleport hub.

The community is great but this is also mostly because you do want to keep a rep, (once char can max all classes ect.) but game mechanics encourage it.  Mobs can be killed while not in a group and those who helped get the death count so there is no fighting over mobs like in some older mmos.  People asking for rezzes and getting them (i actually enjoyed going off helping others since my two main jobs is blm and whm.)

But the most surprising part was the duty finder. Its just like wow's lfg and I was expecting the worse, name calling , people telling others to l2p ect. Now i did bump into the occasional asshat, however those were very far and in between. I was quite happy to see how if the tank wasnt so good was actually given tips and preformed better (i tended to give off tips alot) explaining boss fights to others and things ran smoothly.

heck i was tipped 10k gil for a single rez but more so because of the reputation i have built on my server for running around healing passerbys and rezzing those in need. I was actually surprised by the gesture and the reason behind it. It really pays to be friendly in this game and i have made a whole mess of friends.

I donno I also love healing in this game XD.

    I don't believe that for a second.

I quit playing but while I did play I got the same sarcastic people and ass hats in /shout.

My GF who still plays claims its one of the worst communities she has ever been apart of. She plays on Cactuar, and watching the chat gives me cancer with its stupidity. A guy told a person looking for mobs, "Figure it out on your own ass hat.", Rose tinted glasses much....

It's a given there will be exceptions but all of the systems are in place to make the FFXIV community better than what we've been seeing lately in all of these F2P games.  The fact that the game is P2P alone should make a huge difference over most of the F2P game communities.  Another biggie is the "one character per server" model.  Unlike all of these F2P game communities where everbody's got "throw away alts" that they log into when they want to be jerks, FFXIV allows just one character per server.  Again, there will be exceptions but for the most part I anticipate most gamers will be on their best behavior safeguarding their reps on their one character.  While it is true that one can pay for more characters, what would be the point?  It is much more beneficial to invest one's time developing that one character than it would be to double or triple the effort over several characters.  Lastly, the lack of any meaningful PvP in the game at the moment has to be a plus for the community as well.  Without going into detail, I think that is pretty much self explanatory.  Overall, although some may feel compelled to argue otherwise, the above points alone give credence to a better behaved and  self regulated community than the recent norm.

I guess you play the MMORPG.com version of WoW, you know the one where every question gets a troll response or every dungeon run is full of nothing but wipes by bad players who don't care. Yea I must not play that version because if I ask a question in trade I get an answer and most of my dungeon runs never run into problems. You know if you want to hype your game you don't have to exaggerate it just makes you look desperate to prove just how great the game is (Hey everyone!!! look how awesome and helpful the community of this game is!!!! I'm having so much fun look at me!!!).

Every game has a helpful community in the beginning, hardly anyone knows what to do so there is no point in being a dick because you may have to ask for help at some point. Just wait till the second or third month when more people start hitting endgame and the game is understood better, watch how quickly the community changes when people know what to expect and how to play.

    Lets ROCK!

Had you asked me last week, I'd have said this is one of the best communities I've ever been part of.  Ask me today, I'd say it's easily one of the worst.  I've never seen so many outright asshats on shout chat.  So many kiddies with their immature sarcasm thinking it's cool to troll the crap out of anyone on chat.  People not communicating AT ALL in parties.  Try to give advice?  Be prepared to be told all about how you are the worst player ever.

Who the hell ever said P2P games have a better community?  Yeah freaking right.  It's awful.

I would say it is above average. Definately better than many I have seen but not great either. You still can die in this game surrounded by 50 people and noone is gone rezz you anytime.

Beside that, global chat is mostly civil and people are friendly when you talk to them.
