Dark but good, Light but Evil Classes?

Hey there.

I'm a little worried about some class flavours.

Like the title says most dark skills(necromancy, life drain etc) is only for evil characters and light skills(holy, healing) is only for good characters in many games. SOE even stated that to be a Paladin in EQN, the prime example of a light power Character has to be THAT good guy, or to be a Shadow Knight, the prime example of a dark power Character has to be THAT evil guy.

But what about good characters who tend to be more of dark like Batman or Blade.

And evil characters like the zealous racist Crusaders who are generally still light themed.

Would you wish for a more open way how dark and light works, or should dark stay evil and light stay good?

Personally i would love to be a good guy using dark skills, as they are sometimes more interesting then the very predictable light skills.

I like anti heroes, the Jack Bauers, Vic Mackeys and the Dexters...the ones who do bad things for good reasons. I also think that "light flavored" skills and abilities are about as boring and vanilla as they can possibly be (especially in the star wars universe as envisioned by a developer like Bioware, but that's another subject entirely).

So yeah, I would like the ability to make an anti-hero. Someone who isn't pure evil, but not afraid to do bad things for good reasons, or use dark skills to help a village fend off a gnoll attack etc.

It’s like Niko’s cousin Roman (GTA4) when commenting on ice cream and  boobs in America. They have so many classes in this game that I figure you can expect to see every lore flavor under the sun. The real question is does any of it matter? With such an open system people will go grind out whatever gives them a bonus in PVP or dungeoneering during a given month and abuse the crap out of it while able. Light and dark suddenly loses all meaning in context outside of color for the graphics and animation because no one takes it seriously aside from considering whatever tangible edge it nets them. Its kind of sad in that role and roleplaying (and incidentally PVP) are so dead in MMORPGs.

I think this will be more like Fable or Black & White.  You are what you reap.  I bet most starting classes will at worst be neutral to start.  Then like they have said more then once you have a life of consequence. Do good deeds move to the light.  Do evil deeds move to the dark.  Want to be able to add the Paladin class then yeah you are going to have to be on the light side.  Want to be able to talk to the guy who will make you a Shadow Knight well you will probably have to be pretty evil just not to be KOS.
