THis game has the best Crafting i have ever done in any mmorpg ive played. I really hope the highest quality gear you can craft is superior than the rest of the things you can get in game. Otherwise this amazing crafting system would be completely useless, and that would be sad.
Crafted gear might not have the highest database values but the stuff that 'beats' it is stuff needed for very specific content and it is obtained doing that very specific content. Crafted gear is the alternative for people who don't want to do that very specific content as it requires you to devote a lot of time to multiplayer raids.
As a hard core crafter, I am happy to make the compromise. If you insist on having gear that has the highest database values, do the raids. I'd rather grind crafts and avoid the LFG system and I have no problem with my gear being a little lower in values as long as it gets the jobs I am doing, done.
I'm pissed at SE over many things, mostly tied to 1017 but the balance of crafted gear is well done. Getting full HQ crafted end gear with 5 materia is going to be a long road. Maybe even longer than just spamming dungeons but if it is character achievement and not zerg achievement I'm happy.
Exactly!! Besides...the bread and butter in crafting has always been consumables anyway and gathered materials (which I really like doing btw) can make you VERY wealthy since most people would rather pay for the mats than gather themselves.
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
Can crafted gear compare or actually beat seal gear?
It seems like a great deal of work for something that can just be attained through seals. Am I missing something?
Yes you are missing something, there is a lot of false information from people that have no idea about crafting. Seals gear is great and it's for you to level and not spend a lot of money. It's a good option but there are not all pieces available and not at all levels.
Crafted gear is the best gear in the game. HQ crafted gear + Melded Materia beats all drops/seal gear.
For example:
Crafted HQ Heavy Darksteel Armour has the same stats as Heavy Darklight Armour you can get for dungeon tokens. However, you have 4 Materia slots on the HQ Darksteel and ZERO on the Darklight. It's pretty obvious which is better.

There's also such things as 'binding parties' where people go out to get crafted gear bound to convert to materia to attach it to their better crafted gear.
Also.. 4x melded HQ Darksteel armor blows PLD and WAR AF out of the water.
