I can't play with my friend because of the story line :(

So far I absolutely love FF14, but my friend  was finally able to create a character on my server.

We had major plans on playing together.  We had it all mapped out with the great system of making your alts on the same character. Well, I never took the long story line into account.

Me being a level 27 told him to play to level 15 solo to get a feel and get the important stuff out of the way with the story line.  My plan was for me to get an alt to 15 also and will meet up. This will not work out as planed with the LONG PERSONAL STORY LINE.

This system of story line makes yet another forced solo mmo :)  Sure I'm exaggerating somewhat, but solo never the less !

I know what your thinking in response........You can run Faits, side quest and you scale for the most part in content. I say its more complicated than that. We both have to do our story line to the end to un lock content. We have no choice but to solo content to the end because almost every dungeon has to be unlocked. I cant really even play along with him with my alt, because it's his story line.

The story line is tedious and long and MUST be done, no variation. You get off track more than an hour, your behind playing catch up. The story line involves around a thousand solo quest.

YOU need to SOLO unlock :

- Air ship

- Chocobo ( mount )

- Grand Company

- Dungeon

- Dungeon

- Dungeon............And so on to the end.

Now my friend has another friend ready to play, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL HIM ???

just both keep a job you level together, your story doesn't get in the way once you already did it

    Dungeons are NOT solo unlocks.

    Chocobos are NOT solo unlocks.

    Airships are NOT solo unlocks.

Many story quests are NOT solo only, only the instances attached to them and they're easily soloed (save for Conj, hard as hell to solo story instanced stuff).

I will agree with you though, I HATE the forced soloing. It pisses me off that the starting cities are seperated until lvl 15, and you are forced to said cities for specific classes.

    Other than that, interesting game.

Yes , you have to unlock the dungeons, but you can run the dungeons with your friend. Just group with him and let the group leader queue for the dungeon via duty finder. Yes, most of the story line quests are solo but there are really not that many.

Why not have one class/job where each of you stays at the same level. At the same time if one group member is faster than the others or has more time he can do some crafting, gathering or play another class/job beside that.

If you just invest a little effort I see no problem, sorry.

    Um.... what?

If he is 15 and starting to hit the story dungeons, and you have already done them, you can queue up for them in the Duty Finder together. Youre not locked out from doing them with him. I would think that would be extremely obvious if you have already done them. I mean, you didnt do them solo did you? Of course not.

People who have done them already are constantly running the dungeons to help friends and FC members get them done too.

someone said in chat yesterday that he rented a 10 minute chocobo and it took him about 9 minutes to manually ride to a different city (evading higher lvl mobs on the way). I dont know if thats true but nobody has denied it either. Apparently you can do that. Ive read similar stories in different servers as well.

Yeah, you can travel to the other cities by walking / / riding there. Just cant take the airships until you get to them in the storyline.

Nothing you have written is true. You can do the whole story together except a few key solo instances along the way. The rest of the story can be done with a group including of cause all dungeons.

As for your claim that dungeon unlocks, chocobo etc. are solo: that is not true either. It's simple quests that you can do together.

Class specific quests can be done together, except a few key solo instances.

Maybe you are playing a different game?

I agree, as others stated, when your friend is eligible to queue for a given dungeon, group with him and queue as a group.

     Very NOT thought out response,

Soooo we should match each others quest exactly ?....If he is on quest line #17 and I'm on quest line #38 we can still simply play together ?.....Does not work like that........We would have to be like twins playing EXACTLY together !

The personal quest will consume all of your time, add a few dungeons, add a few Fait runs and your behind. It will be like this all the way to 50 !

You can queue for dungeons he/she (your friend) needs to do. You  can't help them with the solo only storyline quests.

If you have done a 'general' quest you cant go back and do them again with your friend unless you reroll.

So....solo story line quest no. Dungeons yes. General quests you've done no (well you can help your friend but you cant redo the quest and have it in your quest tracker).

Judging from all previous post, all I see are solo players and dungeon ques people. Try letting you story quest fall behind...Its not gonna be fun being level 45 and your story is still back at 20. Add to the fact that you would be a slave to others to help you get into locked out dungeons !

    - YOU MUST DO THE STORY on your first character.

    - THE STORY IS VERY LONG.

    - YOU WILL BE DOING THE STORY SOLO.

Please think before you post !

I get that some have a problem with "forced grouping" in games.

But forcing people to solo is just stupid for an MMO.

But I've been feeling that games have forced more and more solo on people with quest hubs and solo storylines ever since we got wow.

Sure you can do quests as a group or with a friend, but often one party gets nothing out of it at all or it takes three times as long to anything because you keep having to wait for the other guy to get his objective done or accept his quest. Quest sharing both helped this and added a new level of frustration when you couldnt share some of the quests.

It used to be that if you found some good stuff you could tell your friends to come over and share in the riches.. but now there are so many mechanics in the way of fun, it isnt fun anymore. It is a never ending hassle just to do something enjoyable with friends.

Now I know absolutely nothing about the FF franchise.. This makes me want to know even less if I could.

Cool !!!.....It took this many post to find someone that understands what an mmo is !

Urgh.. I remember doing class quests at max level but starting from level 20 in other games.. Or long quest lines that I missed at first but had to go back and do because they ended up unlocking other quests and rewards much further down the line. That is why quest hubs and quest spam really, really annoy me. I dont want to backtrack and kill low level stuff for hours too often. So I feel compelled to do them all NOW!. and they are mostly pointless, but it would take too long to check them all for long term value.

It's called Level Sync. Quit being a dick and let your friend catch up to you.

I rage quit over this issue the other day, after I found I had tons of solo story to do before I could unlock dungeons. True, it's was mostly my fault, picking Conj, a class I hate to solo as my first, but I don't like being lead by dev content, I guess I am done with single player games, and I think all mmos should slave all their content to the group activities, no matter how much in love with their story and cut scenes the devs are. I play their solo stuff in my own time, but if people I know need a healer for Tam Tara, I should be available as soon as possible.

If your with a friend then grouping through it all isn't a problem in FFXIV, and at least with our other classes the story stuff won't get in the way.

Honestly, the entire story from the get-go up through the Airships and the 2 instances should be looked at like a giant handholding tutorial.  Because that is VERY much what it is.

I'm sorry you can't run every single thing that you wanted with your friend.  It does have some Y splits here and there.  But the point is that you can do it and have your own adventure.

Now, if your "friend" is really a "multibox" and you want to run through all the content concurrently using one keyboard and mouse macro, then yea... you could have an issue.

I'm not sure what this guy is complaining about.  These are the types of complaints, that when people come up to you with them, you just look at them, pat them on the head, and walk away.
