I only ever play with a partner. Is there plenty for a duo to do in this game? Can we go into solo dungeons or would we have to find 2 others (or more) to do dungeons? Or will we be pretty much restricted to overland?
Yes, but there will be certain parts where you must group up with more for dungeons (needed to progress unless you want to grind fates of course)). Yeah (as the poster below said) I forgot to mention solo dungeons also needed to progress the plot.

I play with a rl friend and it is a bit restricted when it comes to duoing. There are plenty of solo instances that one would have to disband from any formed party. Also, the questing for the most part is faster and less confused solo. You can enter a five man dungeon together, fates or do leves together. Enjoying the game so far and i am largely against mmo's catering to the soloing crowd but on this one i dont mind at all.

I disagree with some of this.
I do agree that you have to split up for story quest instances. Since it is SE's vision that the story quest is something you do on your own.
But the hunting logs, 4 man instances, duties, trials and all other zone quests can be queued and completed as a group. Plus you get them done a ton faster with a friend or two. Another added benefit of duoing is that you can "piggy back" the teleport costs of getting from location to location. Meaning 1 person can teleport and both people get moved there. So you can switch off who pays for it.
There are a lot of benefits to duoing in FFXIV:ARR, but the most important part is playing with your friends.
Let's not forget about the fate farming either. :-)
