You do, I hope, realize that the internal hardware makes an enormous difference, and not just the sticker on the box.

Not having owned one, I wondered myself if I were qualified to ask that very same question.

Mine is just barely a year old.

    M17XR4

    Intel i7-3820QM @ 2.7 GHz

    6 GB RAM

    Nvidia GTX 675 MX

    120 Hz LED Screen

I bought it initially to play SWTOR and have not had anything yet that I couldn't run. My only issue thus far is having Skyrim overheat the card on max settings.

I love the computer, but beware, the rumors about Dell's service are true. The order was shipped 4 times before they finally got it right. The extended in home service is a must.

    Good Luck!

You're doing it wrong.  First you get advice on what to buy, and then you buy it afterwards.  If you buy something at random first and then figure out what to buy later, that probably just means you find out why you bought the wrong thing after it's too late to change it.

Be happy the parts weren't on back order, or were defective, or were the wrong parts, or that the parts on the packing slip didn't get put in the box, or it wasn't the tech's first 4 months on the job, or the tech wasn't assigned 15 hours of work to do in 8, or....

I have done research. I didn't just go ahead and buy it. Everything i wanted to play was shown to play on max. I just wanted to know other peoples experiences with it

Don't worry that is what Quiz tells everyone who happens to ask similar question specifically because most people who do ask said questions don't usually bother doing research before and end up with poor impulse purchases that really weren't worth the money spent.  If you did adequate research and found the laptop to meet your needs then you are in the minority around these parts (good on you).  Most issues I've seen related to them is overheating and hardcrashes/lockups as a result.  That isn't really unique to this laptop though and is a problem inherent to the form factor combined with high thermal output hardware.

This is typical for companies who want to market things.  You have a lot to learn, especially if you don't want to ask others for help before buying.

Quizzical is right.  Buying then asking if it is any good is pointless because you can't do anything about it after you have made the commitment to buy.  If we tell you the laptop is a bad choice, what can you do?  You could return it and pay a restocking fee, but that's just a waste of money.

A better way to buy is to first evaluate your needs and wants, share those with people who have more experience, then take their advice into consideration.  Most people don't really need a laptop for gaming, and that is one of the first things we would evaluate.

You literally paid for a name, and nothing else.

Alienware is known for running hot, and having short lifespans. Alienware is the "gaming" division of Dell, and that says a lot.

My sister has previously bought TWO Alienwares, both "top of the line", and both died just shortly after their warranty's expired. I was then enlisted to fix them, and ended up wasting a lot of my time on them.

Alienware is NOT worth the money.

Currently, Sager are the best gaming laptops on the market for the price. They also come with Win7 as an option which is a MUST for laptop gaming.

    Sager 17inch gaming laptops

Sure they don't look amazing, have flare, or crrazy LED's, but they have the best punching performance on the market. They beat Alienware in both quality and price-per-performance factor.

You should cancel that Alienware 17 order, you're wasting your money. Please understand, i've had to personally fix 5 different alienware laptops from various friends/family members in the past 2years. NOT WORTH IT!!!!!

Owned M17 and the best part was selling it for a minor dent in wallet, then getting back to bulky desktop. I found myself craving for a real gaming keyboard (like merc stealth), bigger screen and didn't really feel like lugging that expensive laptop with me.

My M17 kept breaking one hard drive and I always had to call to support in England to deal with, wait for parts... It was just too much hassle.

They are nice looking toys, but seriously not worth it.

I'm sure that you have done research.  The question is whether you've done the research that you should have done.

What processor did you get?  What video card?  How much system memory, in how many modules, and at what clock speed?  Which SSD did you get?  How much hard drive capacity, and at what rotation rate?

If you don't know the answers to all of that, then you don't even know what you bought, let alone what you should have bought.

That's a problem intrinsic to gaming laptops in general, not Alienware in particular.

To me, the bigger problems with Alienware are that, as compared to Clevo vendors, you pay considerably more for identical hardware, while having far fewer customization options.

Alienware warranty is also something you should note. If something dies in your laptop, you probably have to ship it back to England and let them work on it. If your break the seals on your own under the laptop, then the warranty is off.

The OP is Canadian (like me) he won't have to ship anything to England like you Finns do :) Alienware/Dell has either in-home or a Canadian Depot service option.

Not saying I would buy one since other gaming laptop options are cheaper/better, but the "ship it to far, far away" issue is not a problem for us.

Oh yeah, sorry didn't think about that. I was too buried thinking on my personal, dark "no computer for weeks" days - all for a minor issue that could be easily fixed on your own, but aren't allowed to do that. :D
