Hey noob here... I saw in the homepage that GuildWars is topping the charts with a whooping 9.0 ratings against 8.0 of WoW.. I saw in some websites that WoW is the best seller game for the first quarter of the year... Just want to know your opinion why in this MMO comunity GuildWars is on top.. Since you are all MMO players your answers are reliable...

"I saw in some websites that WoW is the best seller game for the first quarter"
1. Guild Wars just came out 3-4 days ago. I wouldnt be surprised to see guild wars over time sell more copies than any online rpg ever made.
it is also really, really new and it will take a while for the rating to drop to reasonable levels (i voted it an 8.6) - though it is already based on 600+ votes... basically the killer selling points of GW are: no monthly fee, consentual PvP, group based questing, excellent graphics, level 20 cap (yes, it is a good thing), relative lack of grind. The negatives are: instanced zones (whether this is good or bad is debatable, it is a requirement of the f2p aspect), no fishing, in depth crafting, housing, in-game pizza delivery (not that it really needs any of them, its a concentrated experience rather than totally immersive world), possible lack of long term objectives (stuff to pvP for).
there is also the fact that a lot of the WoW players that initially gave the game high ratings are beginning to get bored of it or find fault with aspects.
Finally, a best selling game does not neccessarily mean it is the best game, if that were true, Windows would be the best OS in the world, McDonalds would be the best food in the world, and Ford's* would be the best cars in the world...
*i dont know whether Ford do sell the most cars in the world, it's likely them or GM

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...
well, the food, car and OS analogy is quite off, in my opinion.
People use Windows cause 99%* of the software runs on windows (and 99%* of all PCs sold come with windows pre installed), people buy McDonald cause it has loads and loads of places where you buy it, is cheap and fast. People buy fords cars cause they are cheap and reliable.
People, however, won't choose a game over another cause it is cheap (they tend to cost all the same) nor cause it is sold in more places (they tend to be sold in same places). They buy a game cause they are more interested in it.
A better analogy wold have been that if a movie is more succesful than another it doesn't necessarily means is better. This is debatable. surely the first had a better commercial success, it was more liked by the people and in definite it had a bigger impact on the cinema-world as a whole. Possibly movie number two is technically better or is aimed not at the general public but at a certain part of it that will consider it better.
So, as in all things "Entertainment", you can't say what is better as an absolute cause it is all about taste. you can just say what is a commercial success or not.
As for ratings, something odd happened. last week WoW was 8.4 and EVE 7.9. then suddenly they both lost 0.5 points (???) and now they are at 8.0 and 7.4 respectivly. Considering the movement of points is ususally quite slow... i am at a loss. Maybe everybody that voted good for GW decided to also vote bad for the game number 2 and 3 on the table? no idea. Both games were quite stable for months.
I'm sure Guild Wars will have a quite huge following. It is very nice looking game with action and PvP as main focus, plus it doesn't cost monthly.
Personally i still prefer WoW, the quests, at least so far, seems to have had more attention from the devs than Guild Wars. but i am playing GW as well, and that is one of its main points. i can buy it (as i did) without feeling guilty cause i can't afford 2 MMorpg (well 4, 2 for me and 2 for my wife) subscriptions. Guild Wars solve that problem effectivly.
Have a nice day
*please excuse the off scale number, i am just making a point, i am aware that is not a correct number.

Because the MMO community is transforming.
Few years ago the community was made almost entirely by CORE MMO players.
Now the community is made by 40% CORE players and 60% NEW players.
There are quite some difference between these 2 categories of players.
The CORE MMO comunity is more likely to play EQ, EQ2, Anarchy, EVE, Ryzom, Asheron Calls, DAoC, these are quite complex games to play and require lots of time and commitment. Those players usually dedicate their spare time playing only MMO.
The NEW MMO community is more likely to play GW, WoW, RYL. These are people that play games off-line more than the online ones, most of them fall on the Casual Player category.
Since the NEW players are a majority now, it is not a surprise to see GW, WoW and RYL(an average game if you ask me), at the top of the chart.
There are different reasons why the above games have better ratings than traditional MMO games:
1)The number of NEW players out-number the CORE players.
2)NEW players have a limited choice of game to choose from, so they are split between 3/4 games, compared to the CORE community which is split betwenn 10+ games
3)NEW players tend to be more enthusiastic about the game they are supporting so it is more likely they give it a 10 regardless, and usually they vote 1 for the competition (that s why since GW came out the first 5 games lost ratings, the same happened with WoW).
4)Core players tend to be more critical about the game they support and tend to be more honest when they rate the game. They also rate other games more fairly (I am a core player but I rated WoW 8, GW 7 only RYL got 3 cause this game is really ugly)
So it is not a surprise that GW and WoW top the chart (the next one will be Age of Conan who will appeal mostly the NEW players, I think Funcom is chasing GW market)
Now, why GW is scoring better than WoW?
There are 2 reasons:
1)It s a newer game
2)It is even closer to off-line games gameplay than WoW, so it is more likely to appeal the NEW category of players the most.
So you just need to take the chart not too seriously, I believe that MMORPG.com staff should rate all the games, and their ratings should determine the chart position, that will be much fair
I think it's curious that Guild Wars is even on this website. This game is very much different than a traditional MMORPG. I would catagorize it as a Action RPG that just happens to be online, much like Diablo 2. It's a nice cross between an MMORPG, Diablo 2, and Counter Strike.
This argument has been beat to death many many times on the VN Boards, never does it reveal anything very good. I've never played WoW, but my roomate did, and it looked like any other MMO out there that I've played. Guild Wars is not like an MMO, so I don't think a good comparison can be made.
It's like comparing Golf to a Ford Mustang.
I find it odd that people keep saying GW is not a MMORPG, the only real difference between GW and other MMORPGs - WOW /EQ2 etc is that the outer world is instanced - thats it!
Theres as much role playing, character development and engrossing story (even better than the others imo) as all the others. You could even say GW takes all the best bits of WOW and EQ and makes them even better.
all mmorpgs lvling finding items meeting friend grouping rping pvping well GWARs has all thats stuff so yes in definistion it is a mmorpg.the ONLY thing thats actuall diffrent is the fact you do not have to spend part of a paycheck to keep playing it monthly so i pity the imecills who seem to think they need to whine and gripe about it.Dont like it simply dont play it it not likes it being paid for cept the retail box.
to begin with, you really shouldn't call others imbecils when your spelling and grammar are attrocious, it just makes you a hypocrit.
secondly, the definition of MMORPG is Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, and since the fact that GW's adventuring areas are instanced, it basically makes the game the same as Dungeon Siege, Diablo, Neverwinter Nights, Phantasy Star Online(what actually seperates PSO from the others is the monthly fee) etc.. the only real difference between GW and the aformentioned games are the chat rooms before you join/start a game(in GW the cities are really not much more than visual chat rooms) and that GW is online only.
which would make GW really a MORPG(Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), or ORPG(Online Role Playing Game), it shouldn't gain the Massively title for the fact being that you cannot adventure with all the players playing at once, only a certain number of players at once that are in your party/group.
personally, i'd rather play without the instancing, i like to go out and do some adventuring and meet up with ppl while i do it, instead of standing around in a city waiting to get a party going, i like to play the game, not sit around and try to play the game. although i am considering buying gw and playing, just for the fact being that "no monthly fee" thing, if they had instated a monthly fee i wouldn't even consider it, cause i can easily just go back to playing Dungeon Siege or the like for free if i wanted to play a game like it.

Thanks for the replies... although some are sarcastic... I appriciated it...
Guild Wars satisfaction rating has already dropped since release and it's only been a few days.
It has a lot of fanbois whose primary goal is to support a game with no monthly fee, yet there will be fees for additional content.
If you think GW will sell more copies than WoW, think again.

GW is one of those games thats following will grow over time.. While WOW's started big from name and hpye but will fade off. Yes i have 60 in wow and 20 in gw so i know both the games well. (my opinion only time will tell)
I was really into wc3 and eq1 back in the day, so i thought i would love WoW but something about it just annoys me. Kinda silly but i think the graphics in wow is what eventually did me in, i just couldnt take them ,it was like subliminal torture.
I hate to say graphics is my major turnoff but i mean we wouldnt play smurfs online would we? Thats what i felt about wow it was like a kiddie mmorph.
Since im into pvp hardcore guild wars is for me!!
