There goes the idea that subscriptions mean less gold spam and botting. None of us with any experience or common sense thought that anyway.
@atenema - can't you right click the name in chat and report or ignore them?
Surprisingly not. The only options are to 'Send Tell', 'Invite to Party' and 'Friend Request'.
I would figure having a "Report Spam" /" Blacklist" option would be the norm at this point.
Best way to easy blacklist these spammers:
right-click name and select reply
use shift to mark name and press CTRL-C
open social panel - blacklist
add person to blacklist - CTRL-V
Though still not very fast, it's the best way to make sure you have the right name to add to the blacklist.
...and yeah... gilsellers are appearing more and more :'(
Or, similarly, do steps 1 and 2 then type /blist add "(ctrl-v to paste name here)".
tbf I think SE are doing ok on this, Sunday for instance I saw no RMT spam. So, SE are definitely following up on reports that are submitted and will hopefully make it easier to report/blacklist soon.
This thread is funny. This issue has plagued EVERY single MMO launch ever. It happened in Anarchy Online, It happened in SWG, to name a couple Old School. A few more recently, I remember GW2 having it particularly bad at launch. I never really got into too many F2P launches, but I recall day one of Alload's open Beta. Yeah, that was about as bad as it ever gets. They always settle down, and this game hasn't really gotten all that bad. since my Black List is about half a dozen.
So seriously? Now people are griping because FF14 is the next in line? Since none escape this. I have to wonder.
Anyway. /blist add "Goldspammer Name" takes care of the issue quickly
and since everyone on my Black List appears to be a legit player name and not some variation of "dhhhjh werew" my guess is they are using hacked accounts. Which is sad since that can be so easily avoided simply by registering for an OTP.
Just logged in on my server and I have not seen 1 gold spam in Limsa Lominsa. Don't know if they have done something about it but just letting people know.

For some reason, Limsa Lominsa doesn't have it as bad, perhaps due to the inability for folks to travel to/from before the airship quest unless you're a Marauder or Arcanist since that's their starting area. I've seen two gold spammers in LL, but Ul'Dah and Gridania are effing nightmares.
Someone in my FC got their account "hacked", he thinks it's from logging in at PAX. Only his Gil was stolen, no new characters made, password not changed, no toons deleted. He got off pretty easy I'd say.

The spam is still going on heavy in Gridania but nonthing in Limsa or Ul'Dah.

Never got the spam in EQ. dont remember it daoc for that matter either. As for newer games. The Secret World did not have this issue either.
Maybe you are remembering it differently? I dunno. Anyway, I didn't really play any of those games, however, I did just now, google each game for gold spammers in chat and as I suspected, all 3 returned hits to forum posts discussing the issue.
But that, for the most part, is irrelevant. The fact is, SE put some pretty powerful security measures in place to prevent these things so these events are happening in the game due to the ignorance of certain players.

Well here is the post you talk about being returned for gold spam in TSW

Well here is the post you talk about being returned for gold spam in TSW
Gold Spammers were not that big back then, sure there were sites that sold gold but not alot of folks bought it.
WoW is when gold spam went main stream.
You know, I really am not going to argue with that. I do agree that gold selling took off as WoW did. But then again, the developer of this game has taken steps to account for what's happening. But how many players are ignoring it?
I set up my OTP to work on my android. If you don't have an Andriod or iPhone, it's still worth the expense to get the security fob if you know you will play this game. Almost every gold spammer I have blisted has been a seemingly legit player name. So it's hacked accounts mostly. This should be avoidable except for the players who knowingly don't maximize their own protection.
It's been 2 new spammers a day in each city this week for me. Not hard to make them go away but it's certainly as bad as I used to see on Aion. And they are scrolling so fast that it's more DOS than advertising.
Originally posted by Darknessguy64 Hah, you can see the spammer in the back too.
Yea, I saw that, too
This is what IceWhite harps on all the time. Customer Service and a strong GM presence would help a bunch here. That is one thing subs should be paying for. Unfortunately, not cost effective for companies.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Well that brings back memories of gold spam in Aion. This actually is worse, come to think of it.
It's pretty amazing that, with the prevalence of RMT in MMOs these days, not to mention their own on-going bout with it in XI, that Yoshi-P and SE weren't more prepared for this ahead of time, and are instead in a position of being 'reactionary' about it.
With all the other things he openly drew on from "standard modern MMOs", you'd think Yoshida would have thought to include a "right-click > report goldseller" function from the start.
I see people using the tired old argument of "all MMOs have gold spam at launch!"
1) For starters... No they don't. Others have already noted a few.
2) For another, other developers have been far more pro-active in dealing with it from the start so it isn't nearly as bad as what we see here.
3) The fact that "all MMOs have gold spam at launch!" is neither validation nor an excuse for it existing un-addressed - especially to this degree. It is all the more reason to ask why the hell Yoshida and Co. weren't better prepared to deal with it ahead of time.
Instead of being pro-active, they chose to sit on their hands and take the "deal with it later" approach.. and so now players who want to hang out, or are otherwise conversing while in town have to keep going through a routine to "block" them manually... because SE failed to implement appropriate measures in anticipation of it. However few steps it is, it's more than should be necessary, being required far more often than should be.
What's their excuse for completely overlooking a known problem in MMOs that they surely knew was inevitably going to happen in ARR? "We didn't anticipate how popular our MMO would be to RMT/Gil Sellers because of how poorly 1.0 did"?
Originally posted by Vonatar Blacklist the gold spammer and your chat window is nice and clean. Sure there are more, but you blacklist them too. Not a big deal.
Not big deal?? Typing MANUALLY all names AFTER opening interface for social??? Is this by you how things are handled?
There is no single thing they did right so far. Not sure how this all got past beta testing. Btw, will never again partecipate in beta, but many do.
Anyway this reminds me Aion. Was really impressive looking at full screen of pure gold spam and only gold spam filled ENTIRE SCREEN in matter of maybe 5 secs. That was in minute before I left for ever. But not only for that. Sill I have played longer Aion then ARR, holder of new record in term of short playing before expiration of free time.

You can drag blacklist on a hotbar actually.

Right click the name and say reply, then you just ass the /blist add part. Voila.
Umm that is not SE. Gill sellers spam and delete the character to make a new one and spam again to circumvent the black list.

1 guy saying he saw his first gold spammer is not a plague. Trust me TSW had a few here and there with emails. They definetly was not bombarded.
Only thread on EQ

Talks about the only spam he remembers is people asking for clarity. I remember sow, teleport and item selling being spammed back in the day also.
EQ2 is a different game

yeah, sure, if you sit in a high traffic public place and not bother to black list them then sure your chat will look like this.
Or you black list the two guys
Or go find some quests outside
Pretty easy.
I myself have only seen about 1 spammer per day in the last week. Not nearly as bad as Aion even to this day.
I think Squenix is doing fine.
All die, so die well.
Avatars are people too
