Why are zones so small in this game? (disappointed as an explorer)

BigdaddyxBigdaddyx Member UncommonPosts: 2,039

Even though i leveled to 50 on my lancer and saw every nook and corner, the explorer inside me was left unsatisfied and wanting more. The maps are too small and i feel claustrophobic in zones.

At first when i heard about mounts being introduced in the game i thought great, i won't have to run around in huge world of final fantasy. But my chocobo was better served as my healing companion.

I run everywhere on foot. Mount hardly makes a difference thanks to small maps. The pathing is designed very much like 1.0, linear paths, invisible walls which block you and won't let you jump off the ledge or small obstacles. Many times i felt i was playing WITCHER 2.

World is anything but open, npc are stuck to one spot with glue under their feet. There is no movement, no life in cities or in outposts. NPC's are just standing there waiting to hand you your next task. The only thing going on for it is the background music and sound effects but that can only go so far to give you sense of immersion when everything else is so static.

Small zones devoid of any life... was this intentional? i discussed about this with my FC mates and they said it could be because SE wanted to maintain visual quality. But then i remembered TERA which looks as impressive and even more in some areas and yet have much bigger zones.

So what could be the reason behind such small maps in FFXIV? was it really just about visual quality or this is all they could muster up in the time they had? anyone else who loves to explore completely disappointed by the size of the world in FFXIV?

This. Unfortunately the drawbacks of having cross platform gaming.

Yeah, i wonder why there are so few "Haters" posting about the small size of Zones and the overabundance "Loading Screens" - that is one of the very weak points if the game!

Simple^^ the first version of the game was so mediocre, that the expectations were one of the lowest I've ever seen in a game, especially for a FF game...So yes it exceeded expectations and got a huge draw, I'd imagine people will start leaving once they spend enough time in the game for the fluff and newness of it all to wear off...

We have to wait till the PS4 releases to get some more juice in the game

Tough the PS4 is more powerful I doubt we will have the freedom people desire sadly.

And the PS4 version will suffer the same limitations that the PC does.  They aren't going to stop developing for the PS3 when the PS4 version launches.

Ok lets say that is the case even then games like Dead Red Redemption managed to give us open worlds to explore on PS3. I know that it is not a MMO but still. To me it feels like as if SE didn't even try and just copy pasted 1.0 zone design in 2.0.

    Sounds exactly like SWTOR..

You really should try Age of Conan, none of these problems are there, the world opens up beautifully after the starter Island, and it's HUGE

I know. I actually took a break from AOC recently to give FFXIV a shot. The Khitai zones are breath taking and huge.

Once you reach the lvl 40 zones and try to do fates and even dungeons that require more than 4 people using the PS3 many are ranting how the game gets frame rate issues and such.

In a game where you are alone in the world won't affect the system as another game with tons and tons of people.

    @GwapoJosh

Oh I'm sure of that that's why I said people will still be disappointed BUT once PS4 releases they are supposed to improve the graphics by releasing direct x11 and maybe hd textures for pc? Who knows.

We have to wait and see I'm afraid.

Did it had a chat system With hundreds of People talking With eachother? No.

Did it had hundreds of People playing in the same zone displaying on Your screen? No.

Seriously! You cannot compare Single player / COOP games With MMORPG's. /facepalm

I was talking about hard ware power of PS3 in terms of rendering high end graphics. And i also mentioned that i know that it is not a MMO.

That goes hand in hand!   Rendering a bunch of NPC's on a screen is nowhere near as taxing on Your hardware than rendering hundreds of fully customized players! Which is extremely taxing on your hardware!

Coupled With that the PS3 has very little memory makes matters only worse and puts even more limitations on what devs can do.

What? In my opinion SWTOR is a game with one of the better map designs. It has large explorable maps, below average zoning except in docks/fleets, hidden areas that you won't discover by merely going through missions, and a consistent art style for each of the planets. Some of the planets are on the scale of a whole continent in WoW, so "small and restricted" definitely does not apply to it.

Tatooine alone is bigger than entire Black Shroud area combined together. That is how pathetically small maps are in FFXIV. You feel like you are trapped in a shoe box.

This is not true at all.

This game was made for PC and then ported to the PS3 after. So they didn't limit the zones because of that at all.

PS3 looks like crap, slow framerate, missing textures, lighting, shadows, low draw distance, takles a while to load everything and everyone, etc.. Slow load times to go from zone to another.

They could have made the zones bigger, but they are working on a DirectX 11 version for Q1 2014 that will look even better, I think maybe they did this to make everything look beautiful and amazing without too many drawbacks even on PC.

Anyway, they are big enough, a lot bigger than many games that are PC only and the world is big enough too. They can add more later in expansions.

Wasn't a port at all.. Both versions were developed side by side at the same time.  Even released on the same day.

    This is bull.

Look at Defiance, the entire ovrland landmass is seamless without a single loading screen, and its much larger than all the FFARR zones put together.

And this is all on PS3 and Xbox 360.

I've brought up the issue of a tiny shoebox sized world in beta, this is IMO one of the smallest online worlds.

    it's a design issue.

I love when people try to talk like they are professional game devs.  I'm not one so I just made an opinionated guess and didn't try talking out of my ass ;)

Or, people like myself really love this game.  About how long does FF have to spank every other game on the player ratings before you realize that people like this game.  If you don't move on and stop trying to be the Grinch.

WRONG!!!! It was created for PC 1st and beta was on PC way before PS3.  Then they created the PS3 port and released these together. However, you couldn't even beta test on PS3 until beta phase 3 for PC.

Now they are working on the PS4 port and the DirectX 11 version.

This game was developed for PC before anything else and as a PC game. The original FFXIV never even came out on PS3.

Read this quote from Yoshi during development. Many people still had doubts the game would ever come out on PS3 as it took a lot of work to get it to work on that hardware.

"We do have the high spec PC version we’re developing, so it’s not going to be a problem for us – it’s quite easy for us to create a version for the next generation. It can’t be lower than the PS3’s specs; it’ll only be higher and much easier for us to make something for that kind of platform. Of course, we want to have as many players as possible to enjoy this game; we will definitely want to bring the game out to as many platforms as possible. But first we will keep our promise and release it on PS3."

They had to do a lot of work to get a PC game with this quality of graphics to work on the PS3, but they made a nice engine and have a good team behind this game and release the PS3 port as promised. It does not perform as well of course, but its playable nonetheless. Now the PS4 port will be much easier since it has specs close to a high end gaming rig.

The old FFXI was a PS2 game they ported over to PC...... This game is not like that at all.

Well maybe this means that I will continue to use the entire world when expansions come out.  I mean what good is a large world if only 1/3rd of it is ever used by players.  The best part about world issues is that they are a thousand times more fixable than gameplay issues.

AOC Online expansion zones - Huge and largely emtpy....run 500 years to the next bit of action....yeah...great (this is coming from a HUGE fan of Funcom....I stopped playing AOC because of the expansion...gear was ugly and world was unimpressive)

TERA - the only big areas were devoid of life...other than mobs that had no sense being there.

GW2 - tons of areas that are just as bland and simplistic as the last...

Space can be implemented anywhere...a beautiful world is hard to come by.  I was playing last night and my 6 year old daughter (who hates every MMO I play) kept telling me to find new castles to look at in the Limsa Lominsa outside areas...she was entranced by the detail and beauty of them.

I'd rather have a small world I can marvel at, than a huge world that is nothing but open world for you to have to trudge through just to get to some action (Fallen Earth is probably the BIGGEST empty world ever...it's huge with lots of nothing)

That makes no sense. You can have large beautiful world too and still marvel at it. Nothing is stopping you from enjoying the sights of the world. Obviously to make  a large world and then fill every nook and corner of it with something to find would just kill the exploring part. That is the whole point of exploration to find things which are hidden or not easily visible.

Your comment about huge empty and large world and your excuse for liking the small shoe box that is FFXIV world completely missed my point.

I remember exploring Vanguard and then suddenly come across a building or a dungeon full of new monsters and loot, after going in all directions to found nothing. That makes the 'trudging' part so more worth it. So i would rather trudge through nothingness to find something exciting then just bang my head against the invisible wall in a shoe box. Vanguard might not turn out to be such a huge success but atleast devs tried to make a proper MMO world. SE on the other hand..not at all.

Disappointed as an explorer?  Really?   I'd be interested to know how this disappointment differs from any of your numerous prior posts in which you bash FF:ARR for any of a number of baseless claims.  I find it surprising that you are even playing the game, much less exploring in it given that by reading your prior posts anyone would come to the obvious conclusion that you simply hate the game.  In fact, I'd even go as far as to proclaim you the "Chairman Of the Negative Crew."  Posing as a "disappointed explorer" when the truth is that all you are trying to do is criticize the game is a bit low, don't you think? We aren't all as gullible as we may appear on these boards.  You seem obsessed.  What's your next thread going to be , "Disappointed by the lack of rest time given in Inns."  Countdown 3 ... 2 ... 1

they had to remake the game in 2 years. This is one of the results of that. Making maps is time consuming.
