    The definition of entertainment:

    1.

the action of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment.

So, that tells me...with actual word definition...that a REAL gamer can't be hardcore. Likewise anyone who calls themselves a hardcore movie watcher or anything else in the entertainment industry.

Hardcore gamers however don't do it for fun or amusement. Therefor they don't actually like games, they aren't getting enjoyment out of them. Some may do it for money (world first and what not), some may do it because it is a huge addiction. But they don't do it for entertainment, which means they force themselves to play.

Anyway, just been thinking about it past few days...and came to the realization, that there is no REAL hardcore gamer. Because they aren't gamers at all. Gamers (or movie watchers or anything else), the real ones, do it for amusement and enjoyment (like in the actual definition).

    hard-core also hard·core (härdimagekôrimage, -kimagerimage)

    adj.

    1. Intensely loyal; die-hard:

Yes you can be hardcore on entertainment, if you can be intensely loyal to that specific game/ dedicated fan of a movie, that that person would spend on more than his social/work time.

Sorry to disappoint you OP, but if you are reading or even worse, posting on this (and similar) forums, you are by definition a hardcore gamer. You see, the average casual gamer doesn't know or even care that sites such as this exist.

Hardcore is first and primarily an attitude. Lets see some signs demonstrating this attitude:

    • A hardcore gamer does not have an average computer, but the best one he can afford. Gaming is his primary hobby after all and worth spending money on.
    • A hardcore gamer does not wait for a visit to his local game shop to learn about games, nor he relies on the sales person to inform him on what's suited more for him. In plenty of cases, he knows more than said sales person anyway.
    • A hardcore gamer spends a considerable amount of his free time into his hobby. This varies depending on age and life requirements, but if somebody has 3 free hours and spends 2 on gaming, he's more hardcore than the guy that has 10 and spends 3.
    • A hardcore gamer is reading this site and other similar to these to stay always on top of game development.
    • A hardcore gamer's most pleasant discussion topic is about games or game related.
You don't need to be paid by game companies to be hardcore. In fact, the majority of the mod community out there is doing it for the challenge and the fun.

In the end labels don't matter. Spending our limited time in quality entertainment of any type we deem fit does. (And be thankful that we have the luxury to have "problems" such as this).

I have to say that the definition of Xasapis rather appeals. If you are posting on this site you are hardly a casual gamer, they don't even look at the official forums of the games they play.

When talking about video games, being "hardcore" most if not all of the times means "abusing" and "addiction", aka spending more time playing than it's healthy.

My computer is better than yours.

What many of us considered "hardcore" 10-15 years ago is vastly different then the definition used today. But please continue to theory craft this ridiculous debate. How many dead horses are we up to now by the way?

Comparing spectating something with interacting with something. Not a very good example is it?                                          And on a sidenote: I also play games for a challenge and to experience things you cannot normally do, not just for fun.       (A good example for me would be the start of my adventure in Dark Souls. I wouldn't call dieing alot "fun", but the challenge and the experience this world gave me kept pushing me onward.)

How do you know "Hardcore" gamers don't do it for amusement? Are you every gamer out there? I think not.               Besides just because you play something alot or are really good at it, at a lvl you can win/earn stuff with it, does not mean you cannot enjoy what you are doing. Claiming that is insanity, because in that theory, everyone who earns a living or wins something is not enjoying what they are doing. How does that make sense?

Either way "Hardcore" is only a label. The terms and titles used in gaming land have been greatly altered over the years and have become somewhat vague. In the end, we are all gamers to some extend, here for entertainment. If we can prove our talent or earn money with it, why wouldn't we?
