Steam, Bungie, Trion, Riot, Blizzard, Ubisoft, Epic games, Nintendo, Bethesda, Sega ... did I miss anyone?
Of those 10 you listed I played 7 of those. And in NONE of them did my Credit Card information get compromised!
But my info got leaked from Good ole SOE. Funny thing is this was in 2011, at that time the last time I played one of their games (Planetside) it was 2008....
All I'm saying is that they should be putting all this energy into other things like stopping hackers in their games and stopping hackers out of them as well... I won't even get into the fact that they need to worry about fixing most, if not all, of their games.

I agree on the hacker front. After all, an fps won't live long when obvious hacking is happening undisturbed. From my personal experience on PS2, the amount of obvious hackers has dropped considerably (I get to see maybe one per week) and they tend to disappear fast. I'm more worried personally about the non obvious ones.
On a funny note, my most anticipated rpgs are unfortunately not mmos (never would have expected that a couple years ago). X rebirth is coming up soonish and Witcher 3 along with Dragonage Inquisitor will probably continue the tradition started by Skyrim.

There are probably many different groups and divisions in Sony's structure that handle those different things. These folks aren't responsible for it all, ya know??

"if we know who you are and you’re abusing somebody on Twitter, we will ban your game account"
Actively going after players whom are arguing with someone on twitter about something completely irrelevant (or even if it is about the game) is none of their business, and making a "gaming embargo" is a violation of the person in question rights. This would most likely end up being considered cyber-bullying. This is something enforced by EU law and cannot be disregarded in their EULA.

Possibly yes. Utilizing this policy to just keep the real troublemakers in check is one thing, monitoring all social media looking for violators is another and crosses a dangerous line in the sand. Corporations like SOE could now enforce their policies and slowly over time almost all their Customers and others will be conditioned and convinced to never complain about products and services again. It's already "dangerous" to take a point of view different from the Masses on FaceBook. It's not going to be a good business world for customers if they have their freedom of speech and other basic rights to address grievances hobbled not by the Government, but by Corporations so big they answer to almost no Government. This policy doesn't do that right now but could be taken o an extreme very easily.
The phrase "The Customer is always right" may not be completely true, but going to the other extreme and judging everyone by the mentality of a Mob or a Herd isn't the right path either. This new policy will be abused, that human nature will ensure. This is history repeating itself.
This policy by it's self is mostly harmless granted, ....however.. if SOE coming out about this policy encourages other Corps to do similar... well let me put it this way....years ago I thought the meatmarket websight FaceBook was going to be a short lived fad, now look at it... I hope SOE is very careful about how they do this.
I wonder how many other Corporations already have these policies in place and are acting upon them, but have not admitted it publicly like SOE?
one or two trolls, to me, actually helps the community by virtue of galvanizing the sane people to rally against the troll. but they have to be very good trolls. some of them play the black hat role very well while others are just douches.

You're making the assumption that harassing other players in any way shape or form isn't in the EULA. As long as they have some type of "anti-bully" clause in their EULA there will be absolutely no grounds for a class action lawsuit. I am fairly certain that they have their own lawyers and I'm fairly certain this type of aggressive, proactive measure would have been run by legal beforehand. I actually applaud Sony for seeking to make their games a-hole free. I'm all for friendly debate, but if someone actively seeks me out on Twitter and is harassing me on Twitter or Facebook or Google+ , you're damn right I'd like to see them banned. That crosses a line in my books.

"approximately 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain" were lost, apparently from "an outdated database from 2007."

I'm not making that assumption. Trolling isn't necessarily harassment. Ninja-looting, killstealing, teamkilling are all things that people consider trolling.
And regarding the second part, it doesn't matter, if SOE actively goes after people outside of their game that's not applicable to their game, hence removing people's license for that game (banning) is actually not within their power. That is very much a violation of his privacy as well as rights.

that DB contained data that was still useful/utilized and possibly damaging to me. I spent days doing damage control. I will not get into the details here, but trust me when I say even though it was an old DB it still caused many People grief.

Someone didn't really read the article, and more importantly if they had clicked through to the original article,
they would have seen that Linda did not actually use the word Troll in her discussion and was really focused on people who are, to quote Carlson says, "those who transgress to such a severe degree - death threats, sustained abuse, bullying, etc. - tend to have an escalating history of similar behaviour."
So it's pretty obvious she's not really talking about people being critical of the game, or misbehaved on occasion, but the serious arses we all have run into so often in our daily internet travels.
Fear not, all dissention will not be suppressed, but even if it is, you can always come over here and voice your concerns, tends to be a lot more open than any company sponsored forum
And in game, there's just no call for dissention, just play the darn game and enjoy yourself.

Not that I like trolls and asses, but they have their place.
the real trick to defeating the trolls and such is not to eliminate then, is to make examples out of them. I wouldn't ban their accounts, I would simply turn on their pvp switches (so anyone can attack them and loot them, but they cant attack or look anyone other than other trolls), and/or transform them into ugly monsters.
banning is so uncreative. How can such uncreative people be involved in making a video game.

If that is what SOE is after, just the Ash[Hatts and jerks, than I am in agreement with this policy. There has to be limits to what constitutes acceptable behavior in any human group, even in MMOs.
It is not what they Intend that worries me, it is what the second or fourth or twelfth Community Manager after Carlson will do with the policy and how it's enforced. In our "Like" Society a Policy like this could easily get out of hand.
Let's hope my fears of "how out of hand this could get" are unfulfilled and this policy does what is intended and only that.... curtailing the abuse some Players throw at others. I could get behind that.
I've said on this what I desire to, I'm out. Have a good day folks.

I can tell by the reaction here that SoE is doing the right thing.
lol! they ll ignore elitist?(most often the elitist are the one name troll)mmsad for soe! i would have taught they would have understood by now that only in the direst of circumstance you act like she want to act!
SOE has nothing to say, when it comes to talking the shaet about anything or anyone.
I seem to recall several times in the past when they made fun of and criticized their own paying customers.
You can say all the bad things about SOE that you want, so long as they are true (and there are plenty of things to pick from).

You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith
that DB contained data that was still useful/utilized and possibly damaging to me. I spent days doing damage control. I will not get into the details here, but trust me when I say even though it was an old DB it still caused many People grief.
I wasn't happy with SOE about that, but this new Policy of theirs could be abused in way too many ways and actually causes me much more concern than a DataBase Hack.

And don't be an arse.

She looks like an authoritarian control freak to me. I would say more but it would result in a warning.
I can tell by the reaction here that SoE is doing the right thing.
what you you prefer: 1) A company who did things wrong in the past and try to change for good. Or 2) a company who did crap in the past and keep doing crap and will stay doing crap in the future?
The mindset in your post is that same mindset that prevents society from evolving in the right direction. It keeps devolving when people think this way.
EDIT: i agree with the last part, as long as people call them out the right way.
i agree w you - it should never happen
and even tho it was a 4 year old database, there were approx 900 credit accts that were active and still worked
