No you get gear via crafting, quests rewards or dungeons. IF you do dungeons get your son use to strafing to avoid AOE damage as it becomes very important in later content. The mobs do drop random things like skins etc but that is all used in crafting.
Ok thank you for your response. I miss the excitement of killing something and having that chance to get a world drop! Anyway, we have done the first 4 dungeons and have gotten our mounts.  We are having a good time with it! :)
actually yes I have looted armor from killing random mobs out in the open world. I haven't seen any rare drops but I have obtained hq crafting drops.

Oh nice! Something to look forward to rather than crafting materials!

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Hey, look, it's the reason to pay a sub fee for this game over f2p games.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Unfortunately this is not correct. Everything that drops in open world is for crafting (even those armour pieces). The only way to upgrade your armour is the following:

    1. Dungeons. The various chests in the Dungeons have a set of specific items. There is usually a chest with an accessory (ring, armband etc) a chest with a body piece or weapon (usually from last boss) and other chests containing feet, legs, hands.

    2. You are doing Leves. They either give an armour reward listed on the leve or there is a chance of a chest spawning in the leve area that can contain random items, incl. Armour.

    3. Crafter or Auction House

PS: I like to collect full sets of Armour for one of my classes and run the same dungeon up to 20-30 times to get all the pieces. I just love the look of a complete set, they are all so fantastically detailed and good looking.

Hm. So is it maybe different for fate mobs or levemete mobs because I have 100% looted gear from non dungeon mobs.

Fates only give Pets and Odin and Bahamut give the Odin's Mantle and Bahamut's Horn respectively.

Leves can give gear, that is correct. I have not done enough though to say how good the drop rates are and how often the random chests spawn.

Promising is one thing, delivering and in a reasonable amount of time is another.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

Aye I forgot to mention the leve quests where you can get gear from chests but I kind of think of them as limited daily quests.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
