Mechwarrior Online dissapointment.

I didnt expect the MWO to be a MMO or MMORPG, which is not and that's fine. Though I did expect the game to have somekind of background story going with at least some form of metagameplay.

Due to the little rumours and info I had picked earlier about MWO I thought it's going to have the Clans invading Inner Sphere space and there would be somekind of bigger conflict going on, fighting over territory, multiple game modes, world/solar/galaxy map with some basic info what's going on etc.

What's really going on is two simple game modes, no background story, a bunch of maps where Inner Sphere farms eachothers for C-Bills (currency) without even a few words before the map to tell me what's going on. There's just your mechlab, and through random skirmish you go back to the mechlab.

No support for guilds/clans, chatrooms of anykind. Even the mechlab is windowed and messy in design.

Like I said, I didnt expect a MMORPG here, but come on, there's only 2 skirmish game modes with absolutely no story going on, through windowed mechlab to farm cash. I can pick one of the Inner Sphere factions for me, but it means nothing, there's guys from the same faction on the opposing side too, having no real reason.

The gameplay is fun though, it's very fun actually. The game runs perfectly for me, the controls work, the mech feels like a mech and some of effects are very nice. Too bad the awesome gameplay is kinda lost on playing a random guy in a random mech against random opponents in a pointless and nameless skirmish over nothing.

For the aspect of blowing up mechs just because you can, this game is definately fun, works fine, and worth trying. The F2P model is quite nice, I have absolutely no real reason to spend money in this game, and can blow the real money "hero mechs" into bits just like anyone else. But for the soul and feeling of battletech universe, this game is a dud, there's absolutely nothing going on storywise, it's just a meaningless skirmish after another with no reason given for the battle, no story being told, and you dont even know where you are in the galaxy, like soulless droids fighting eachothers because they are programmed to do so in an eternal battle over nothing.

This game desperately needs metagame, metagameplay, and some story and lore elements mixed in there, even just a little, to at least give an illusion of some meaning behind it all.

MWO.. is just almost identical to world of tanks just different vehicles.  This disappointed me as well (not to take anything from WOT as its a lot of fun) I expected more from MWO.  I drop in once in awhile for a 15 minute shootem up but there really isn't enough there to keep me grinding.

Yeah and that's really a shame, with a little more effort into the game it could have been interesting enough to drop some dollars on it.

At least WOT has a clean look to it when it comes to tank depot, and it has some advanced support for groups. All the menus, score screen, and the mechdepot starting screen looks like someone made them in heavy hangover with 16 color palette.

Why do devs waste these opportunities...

WoT has a much longer history. Given the time this game will catch up.

Now Playing: DARKFALL Unholy Wars "Return to Open World, Full Loot PvP, Conquest in a Sandbox MMO with player driven economy! Just like classic MMOs!"

I have to add some optimism here regarding the future of this game, I just saw a video of the devs talking about the community warfare and it looks really interesting.

There will be all kinds of contracts for mercenaries and factions vs. factions etc, conquering planets and so forth. Your own dropships you use to assault on locations etc, UI2.0, big improvements, we'll see how it turns out but it's exactly what I think this game is missing. Lets hope this stuff gets into the game in timely fashion.

As a Mechwarrior myself, the best way to get a feel for this game is check out the forums and play from the NGNG voice servers through Teamspeak3. The real feel for the game arises only when you meet other mech-warriors through the speech channels. You will find Kurita, Lyran Commonwealth, Rasalhaug and the other great houses represented. Even mercs such as Browncoats and Independents, Devil dogs, ACES, and the Clans.

    Dagan Nemens - Champion
    Cave Elf - Champion
    Dr Who - Triumph
