About the 8M+ gil owners. Why can't they investigate them without suspending their accounts? IMO they can simply run a query on your gil transactions and see if it's legit money or not...
Because SE doesn't do anything half-way, tends to be very heavy-handed in things, and has a very "ban first, ask questions later" approach to it.
They were like this even in XI for the entire 7+ years I played it. Very "all or nothing" in their approach. They didn't do squat about the RMT for a long time. Then, when they decided to take it seriously, they created an entire Task Force, separate from the GMs to deal with it, and did so very aggressively.
I'm not saying that's "good" or "bad". That's just how they are.
Wnder if legacy players are exempt. If I understand correctly, they were allowed to being 10% of their version 1.0 Gil with them. I know of a few people who were millionaire from day one because of this.

They won't have a bunch of employees sitting idle waiting to sift through thousands of logs. They would setup flags but imo a simple gil flag is not good enough, you can't blame an innocent person without proof.I believe there is more to it,as mentioned selling items to mask the rmt transactions. They might also be considering time played and other flags as well,i doubt a simple 8 million is all they look at.

Too bad I earned 17 million Gil (I started by leveling all professions classes) and now I am banned for 3 days because I am under RMT investigation. Good job SE!
Ill never understand the whine about gil generation, there are plenty of ways to obtain them and I for one are secured for bit.
Fishing is also decent for generating gil, the leves for it makes gil generating look like wow dailies on steroids.
The only reason you have 17 million gil is because gold farmers and gill exploiters are driving the prices up but dumping so much gold into the economy. So the stuff your selling is unobtainable by anyone not buying gil or not participating in the arms race.
Does the whole gold selling is bad thing make sense to you now. Its a vicious cycle.

You don't know what you're talking about. Cyan is on my server and not only a dedicated crafter, she is very smart and efficient in the method she has used to level and make sales. She earned most of that fortune hitting up early 50 adventurers for 100k for their artifact weapons. Inflated? a little, but smart. Those people had accumulated money by questing, selling stuff and forming fates. They easily had 100k each to drop being one of the first few to finish that quest.
I'm on the same server and as a weaver primary and a number of secondaries, i sell the 1 star garments hq for 35-70k depending on who is competing on market and which piece. It adds up over time, and after 2 weeks, I too have a ban/under investigation. I made a thread about it.
Alot of people can't even imagine having money in the game because they are too lazy or ignorant to get it. It's easy and I certainly wouldn't call someone a cheater, or even necessarily suspect it, if they had 500k to 2mil to drop on an item 3 weeks to a month after release. All you trash talkers full of jealousy and vitriol need to take a step back and realize, for real, legitimate players are being punished...

There is also no excuse for banning players who buy gold either from any game any smart player will know how to avoid the ban through methods of making purchases from companies who know what they are doing or use the proper trading tactics so you can deny the illegal trade lots of players just accept 8 million gold from a gold farmer and don't trade any items back and this is why they get caught.

RMT is bad because it almost all economies, it dumbs down the economy choices, by introducing a very simple solution to acquire ingame wealth: just spend your "real life money". RMT is extremely time-efficient and just like exp gain is being min-maxed through fates, RMT would be the min-max way for anyone playing the economy game. The difference is, while the economy game itself is naturally about min-maxing, the PvE does not necessarely have to be about min-maxing.
For the reasons I've stated, it is no wonder people used to hate all forms of RMT. People hate "dumbing down", and that is precisely the consequence of introducing RMT to an economy game.
RMT is just as bad when the publisher does as when other people do it. It is actually worse when the publisher does it while simultaneously arbitrarily including a rule against players providing RMT services; that's just hypocrisy and done to remove as much competition as possible to increase their earnings. This is why I prefer Diablo III's current RMT system (yes, I know they will removing it and it is very good they remove it, since RMT dumbs down the economy game) over GW2's; it is the lesser of two evils.
I watched a video last night of a boss fight and the player had over 6 mil gil, based on gear he had, etc there was no way he got it legit. Im level 50 and have farmed mats I've sold, Ive mostly taken the GIL option on quest handins and I havent made more then 500K gil at best. Im not saying people cant have that much 4 weeks after launch, but the number should be very small and it would only be people who committed time since launch to just make money

i have zero sympathy for people who buy gold from illegal goldsellers. their accounts should be permanently deleted. I hope in the future SE will continue to implement more efficient ways of finding these idiots so they can be banned. gold sellers and gold buyers are the scum of the mmorpg community, all they do is destroy the economy/game for the rest of the people that care for the game. I 100% agree with the temp ban. I have been playing since launch and I know a lot of the high end crafters in my server- and 8 mil is a stupid amount of money, anyone who has that much definitely has accumulated a large amount of illegal money. This includes the dumbass guilds charging 500k for titan runs when they know the only people who can afford that shit definitely bought from gold sellers.
Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

Quoted from this thread, dude. PROBABLY the reason you think it's impossible to make money is... you don't read.
A level 1 miner can make money. Find the cost of shards on the market, mine shards, sell shards for 10 to 15 below market price to avid crafters. Usually market has them @40 to 50. If you farm 400 shards per hour and dump them at 30gi, that 12 THOUSAND gil per hour, times 4 hours is about 50 thousand gil per day. That is as a level 1. LEVEL ONE, dude.
Now, get a couple crafting classes to 50, takes about 30-40 online hours each conservatively (some can do faster because they are practiced at leveling or have help from fc mates) and your hq products become worth 15k to 80k. Be constructive of the way you sell and same 4 game hours per day can net you 200k to 500k per day, or more.
So tired of this "I call bs" crap just because you're too damn lazy to talk to people or read some reddit posts.
They just need to look in the db for the accounts that have lots of money or that sell stuff at price that are not making sense then follow them in game a few day's or weeks with a script or something to record there game play.
Then analyze the information and once proof is accumulated enough to justify to have the account banned then just do it.
They could know exactly what exploit they use and how they do it and fix the issue at the same time or on the next patch.
I could be wrong and this could be more complicated then anything at this point till they make the process more automatic and full proof but it is a start. Specially knowing they have access to the DB itself. They should be able to track everything in-game at anytime. So why not start with the players that transfer more things or gold then anyone else with this kind of process? .
Gold seller or botter get massive resources and gold real quick it should be easy for them to find them by analyzing the DB ( how much gold earned per hour, days, how much they sell stuff and for what price and to who ). Track them for a few week's without doing or saying anything let them get use to act like they do and lower there guards then bam!.
They can even start looking at different websites that gives exploit and bots for this game. There is a few easy to find one's that show how to make fishing bot's , autocrafter's bots etc. heck they even have autofighter and assist bots on those websites.
I guess all MMO publishers need basic transaction history on ingame currency and trades.
This would give them the tools to rollback trades from known offenders without punishing honest crafters/traders that happen to trade with the offenders. Sure it sucks that a sweet sale is rolled back - But you lose nothing. Dishonest ingame currency is gone but your item is back. And no innocent traders were banned!
Some games already have this "follow the money and goods trail". All mmo's with a market/trade option needs to have it.
And by the gods... The reaction on FFXIV official forums are pretty horrible. Basically people are rooting for bans for anyone who made more ingame currency than they did themselves. Wow... Just... wow!
We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!! (repeat ad infinitum)
There are going to be a lot of legit bans when a game is as overridden with gil sellers as seems to be the case. Problem is IMO is making the threshold at 8 mil in a game where gear sells for mil a pop, pretty easy for a hardcore player to have that much by now.
yes but the question is why was it selling for a mil a pop? There are less than 1000 quests total in the game. The level 50 quests reward about 1200 gil.
Lets assume there are 1000 quests in the game (which there arent), and assume each one pays 1000 gil (which they dont), you still only end up with 1 million gil (assuming you dont spent a single gil 1-50 which is absurd). So when items goes up for sale for 1 million+ and sell regularly, its not from gil fountains. Its most likely from farmers using a known duping exploit and perhaps even regular players duping. SE seems forced to do this until they get it under control.
Possibly, I've not fully explored every gil raising activity in the game, nor much past around lvl16 during Beta 3. I simply asked a question and the answer seemed to be gear is going for that much. We're talking weeks and weeks since Ob, who knows how much gil has been earned in a legitimate manner and how much has not, aside from SE?
It just seems to be a low threshold to me, would be in most games, especially one heavy on crafting and loot. IF gear is going for a mil, I'd think you'd want more then 8 mil if you're buying gil with cash. That's hardly enough to deck out for two jobs.
Lets not forget how much a trader can earn, given the large number of players (potential buyers) buying and selling day in and day out. Some players I know from past guilds would be putting hundreds of items a week into market. Because all they do is sit around and craft.

Let me respond to this. Let me use Darksteel as an example. In order to make 1 Darksteel Heavy Body piece uou need 4 Darksteel Ingots Each Darksteel ingot requires 9 pieces of Coke anf 1 Darksteel Nugget. Each piece of Coke costs 125 Tombs of Philosophy or 1125 total. The only to obtain these Tombs is by Instanced Raids with CM being the most rewarding with 100 awarded per run. A good crew can clear CM in 30 minutes so that is 6 hours per ingot and 1 day of playtime to craft the ingots you need for the body piece. That is a lot of play time. I don't know about you but my time is valuable and if I am going to use that much time I expect to be well compensated for it.

and I call BS on your statement. I am a Legacy player. Even after Yoshida's partial Gil wipe I enter the game with 5.5 Mil. I have most crafting and gathering Classes to 50. During slow periods I mine Darksteel and Gold Ores with my Miner and convert them to Nuggets with my Bsm and Gsm. It's no problem for my to make 50K a day just doing this. This is on top of the other crafting I do. Didn't take me long to make another 2.5 Mil, all done legally.
Too bad I earned 17 million Gil (I started by leveling all professions classes) and now I am banned for 3 days because I am under RMT investigation. Good job SE!

No, YOU don't know what you're talking about. Yes, some of those people bought your goods with money they earned themselves, but the vast majority probably did not, considering the prices some of the gear is going for. That's like saying you had a boat that you made, and you sold it to a man in a ski mask holding a bag full of money with a bank's name printed on it, and you cannot fathom there being anything wrong with that situation. I have almost all crafting to 50. I was one of the first on the server to be 50 goldsmithing, one of the most lucrative crafting professions. I STILL don't have 8 million gil (but close), and I only make my own gear for this very reason. The prices are stupid out of control. They got that way from inflation caused by RMT. You can pretend to be willfully stupid about it, but you're not, and somewhere in your head, you know that half of your stuff you sold was bought with MT gil.....especially the items that go for almost 1 million gil themselves.
Well, let's see here... to make a Hard Hippogryph Leather, you need what, 9 Potash and an HQ Hippogryph Skin?
1 potash is 35k a piece atm, x 9 you'd be just over 300k. For the hard hippogryph leather alone.
Most of the end-game gryphon gear requires 1-2 pieces of this leather, so there's 600k right there. That doesn't include the other ingredients....
Realistically, a top-tier end game item would be anywhere from 250k - 1 million gil. At least if I had to guess based solely on current prices, availability, and the number of crafters capable of actually making it.
Problem si that gear is pretty much worthless even if hq's and materia'ed due to the ilvl 90 stuff, I'm not gonna bother with it myself, because its not all that much better thank darklight gear, not enough to make a noticable diffrecent with how little stats do anyway. Only stat I actually notice doing anything is vit, most of the time you need ot upgrade your stuff I've noticed is solely because you don't have enough hp (aka vit) to take a hit.
Should lower the potash cost to like maybe 1 per piece. or 2 even.

An a sigh of relief from everyone with 7.99M Gil...
And the people posting here that they got it legit never seem to say how they did it. The game's been out 4 weeks and people walking around with that much already..I call BS on this.
i have zero sympathy for people who buy gold from illegal goldsellers. their accounts should be permanently deleted.

Here is a idea :

Should lower the potash cost to like maybe 1 per piece. or 2 even.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
