Currently I am using my mouse and keyboard but I was wondering about playing with a controller. I currently do not own one but was thinking about buying one. Is there any advantages/disadvantages to using a controller over a keyboard and mouse?
Sorry, I haven't tested controller, but if you do play with mouse: make sure to rebind the "confirm" function to an easy-to-access key. I got the "confirm" function on X. Reason for why: "confirm" function is very useful and will save you a looooooooooooot of clicking.

Controller. Best interface i have seen ever. A ton of customization options for targeting filters (4 quick switch), ordering of party members for easy dpad selection, multiple "controller crossbars" you can switch with one button. Camera, Zoom, walking is extremely accurate and smooth.
It has a learning curve but once you master it is faster than mouse/keyboard.

people need to stop spreading this lie.
If you take a PROFICIENT m/kb operator and a PROFICIENT gamepad operator and place them in game on their respective hardware you'll find this statement ridiculous. There is and never will be a comparison until dpads and thumbsticks are no longer so strongly reliant on analog and digital directional input as they are. It's by design. m/kb is more efficient, customizable, and quicker in response and over all control of interface. It may not be COMFORTABLE for everyone. That is different than saying >< something else.
In games with a small amount of commands, such as sidescrollers, platformers, puzzle games, you'll see most of the time a gamepad out performing a kb/m setup. Especially in games where most of the input is directional based like in Racing games or in games where directional combinations perform actions or abilities like in Fighting Games (ala Street Fighter)
MMORPGs like FFXIV even though it's very mindfully designed for console gameplay are still most 'efficiently' played on m/kb. Comfort, again, is a different subject. But, that yellow highlighted text up there just drives me mad

Love it, tank endgame dungeons no problem, does require using macros to stack some abilities. (I.E. Combo chains)
Very fun.
Now one of those I have. I didn't think it was possible to use my ps3 controller on my laptop. Guess I should google more often. If I can get my ps3 controller to work I'll give that a try.
I played with KB/M primarily, but I did use a controller a fair bit as well, particularly with fishing. Ran my HDMI cord to my TV, turned on some good tunes, plugged in my controller, and did some relaxing fishing. It was pretty decent.
use controller with turbo key for gathering. this will save so much time for clicking. just hold on a button, then wait for 10s, then move onto next nod.
If you are going to play an MMO on a gamepad, it doesn't get any better than this. I have look speed turned all the way up to give it the turning speed of a mouse, combine that with L2+R1 or R2+L1 to switch between enemies and you will be one of the fastest people out there. I'm always a second ahead of everyone when one monster dies and you have to switch back to another monster or boss.
There are things that are faster with a kb/mouse and other things that are faster with a gamepad. Not many keyboard users can take action screenshots of bosses like I can, unless you have a key designed for it. If you want to take a screenshot with a kb you have to turn on F.Lock, then control/something to drop UI, then print screen to take a pic, then turn F.Lock off again. With the gamepad you kill UI with L1+ Select and screenshot with L1+ Start.
I made multi macros as well to save some space. As a BLM I have Manawall, Manaward , and Surecast all on one macro so when the crap hits the fan or I get a little extra attention from enemies I'm ready for it.

The only other game I can think of that offers decent gamepad support is DC Universe Online, and of course that game also has a PS3 version, so no surprises about decent gamepad support there. I think TERA has it as well, but I've hardly touched that game.
Another game that's fun with a game pad (but doesn't have built in support, even though, IMHO, I think it should) is Guild Wars 2. I've been using Combat Mode in combination with Xpadder while playing with a 360 pad, and it's been a blast. Menus are a bitch to navigate and close, but the combat alone makes it worth it.
Anyways, I agree that FFXIV does gamepad support extremely well. Of course, it has a console version, so perhaps it is expected, but I still think it would be nice to see more MMO's offer this. Even if someone prefers M+KB for combat, I still think having controller support is awesome, especially (like I said in a previous post) for things like gathering, fishing, etc.
The only thing that I was curious about for MMO's with controller support was how efficient are healers on gamepads as compared to on KB+M? I'm sure it varies person to person, but I'd imagine that, as far as healing goes, KB+M would be ten times more efficient. Has anyone had any experience with it?

Can't go back to sitting at the desk anymore

How does the steam controller make you feel?
Will it be a viable alternative in your opinion?
