I hope SOE pull something out of the bag at E3! They said they are looking into a new mmo action game Could be ok!
But it's abit alarming that once top of the mmo market and still considered one of the best, don't even have a game that alot of people like :S
One thing that i hate about SOE that i think they should change is they listen to their community but they don't give the playerbase what they want! Just look at PS for that!
I just hope they have something in E3 for us or they are in trouble!

Listening to the freaks and nerds online that call themselves community is not going to help a game, a party, or anything for all that matter. Someone that play games like me, play more games, play again...well, you could listen to my nerd side and enforce solo on everyone, prevent grouping unless folks are living in the same city, put a complete unlimited levels and let peoples abuse it in every possible PvE way and so on...but it would not help the game! But you would prolly have a few hundred players including me and R1tual!
But I guess nerds listening to nerds is kinda normal.
See, nerds will say stuff like: Solo(or raiding) need to get better rewards because it test the real skill and real commitment of the players. Rational peoples will say stuff like: Well, soloers need to be the best soloers and reach the top of the soloing system, beside that if they want to be good at any other activity, they can do it. See, been nerds themselves, they have troubles to differenciate the rationals and nerdy requests. Add someone like me that make mostly rational requests but sometime let my nerdy side loose and not realize it, and you completely confuse those nerds as well.
In life, if you want a muscular body, there is only a few ways, and car racing is not that way, neither is been a doctor. Been nerds themselves, they are happy to give everything to what they judge is more nerd-worthy even if it have no logical asset toward the reward it give. So you have a nerdy raiding system that outclass everything else in EQ. In EQ2 you have a devotion to the guild system...and so on...nerd...nerd....nerd....NERDY NERDS! If you want ''non-nerds'' to enjoy the game, you need more logical rewards to the activities. Heck, even some nerd like me dont like this nerdy system...oky, I am more like a half-nerd hybrid...

How is SoE in trouble? EQ has over 400,000 subscribers, EQ2 and SWG 250,000 each. I play Planetside and there are plenty of people playing it.
I wouldnt go by the ratings on this site, 75% of the reviews are bull***t, writin by kids who have never even played most of the games they trash, they just ride the band wagon becuase they think its kewl.
All this doom and gloom by people on MMoRPG message boards is hillarious sometimes.
Think for yourself sometimes, and stop spouting the non truths of the general masses.

Are you referring to the top 7 here where most of the list is the difference of one decimal place? OMG, they are down a tenth of a point from being in the top 7, talk about a company in dire straights.

wow, SOE rocks, I will only play a MMORPG by them because at least I know it is made by a good company.
Who cares about the ratings!
I'm going to agree with the OP. SOE sucks at making MMOGs. They have no friggin clue.
EQ = Verant made it good, SOE made it bad
SWG = Horrible - Released unbalanced - Released unfinished - Empty worlds - Mindless pvm (no content) - Suck-*ss Pvp - Crafting was pretty good, but required an insane amount of time if you wanted to compete (4 hours just running harvesters every other day - before speeders)
PS = Great out of the gate - Every new content update makes it suck more
EQ2 = ROFL - You think you have the vision of Verant? ... Right - What's immersion?
SOE out of all the companies must spend the most, which means they need a LOT more revenue than most. They can't afford to have games with subscriptions in the low 100s. PS is a niche game, and has about 50k subs IIRC. Have all their games undergone server merges? I know PS and EQ have. Has SWG had merges?

SOE is garbage.....
They had two games in the top 10 before WoW was released and this site was bombarded with WoW fans.
Coincidence? I think not.

SOE suxx, just to use a term I hate.
But they really deserve it.
They think that they can feed their customer with crap, and get away with it.
Back to reality guys.
I stopped playing SWG after SOE introduced player city. The player city isnt a bad idea, but they allowed too much player cities to be created. Then all of the cities become a ghost town. You can even find some one to heal you if you are not in a group.

1. EQ has about 30k that still regularly play considering they will have purged 23 servers and 10s of THOUSANDS of characters. People just did NOT come back after their free month of wow or eq2.
2. think the top 10 games are played on consouls, pc are way down the list, and pc-rpg are even farther down the list. Mmorpg are becoming a nich market considering the #s that prefeer shooters, sports and other games.
Wow, so much hatred. And hatred lead to the dark side.
I am not sure I agree with SoE suck, they try to make money and they dont deliver crap willingly, they try to do what is more profitable and think will please the most peoples.
They are just lacking at reading into humans minds or hearts. This is why SoE is making MMORPGs and not the main shooter Sony is offering after all.

SOE Only have 800k subs over all their games! Thats very poor!!!!!!
Probally lost bout 200k due to the CU lol!
I just want to remind SoE enthusiasts, that EQ2 have less than 250K subscribers compared to EQ which has 500K.
To me, that looks like a failure, considering that EQ2 is already 6 months old and should have took off already, instead it still struggling behind a game 5 years old.
And if you think that EQ players will eventually move to EQ2 you are wrong.
I played EQ for 4 years and I was waiting with trepidation for EQ2. Suffice to say it was a big disappointment and I canceled my account after 5 months, so I expect other people to do the same.
Also another sign of EQ2 failure is the debacle for the fight for top spot with WoW.
Blizzard game just won hands down, it has 6 times more subscribers than EQ2.
The problem with EQ2 is that is not a product that appeal to CORE players, because it is too simple.
Neither appeal the casual players, because it is too hard.
Result is that few people play the games (less than forecasted at least), and even less will play once other games will come out, like Vanguard, D&D, Hero's Journey, Gods and Heroes, Darkfall.
These are all games that appeal the same kind of players that liked the original EQ, and for SOE it will be difficult to retain its player base.
SoE was living at the back of EQ success, but when EQ will eventually be put to rest, SOE won't have a ga me that will keep it on top of the MMO market anymore, and it won't surprise me if it will follow the same fate as Interplay.
I guess all it proves is .... just because you have the largest development budget, doesnt mean you can make a game that keeps everyone happy.
Personal choice has a lot to do with these figures, not just "SOE sux" thats silly.
EQ2 does as much to apeal to the most populated section of the market as WoW does. Unfortunately to secure a chunk of that market means making a game that gets old for the experienced players really quickly. I like both EQ2 and WoW a lot.... but they are just not deep and vaired enough to keep me playing past 3 months, thats why I have shut both accounts in the last 7 days.
I dont care who makes the next truly great MMO, I just wish they would hurry up and do it!

SOE has proven to me time and time again that they could F'up a ham sandwhich. I too am waiting for the next great mmorpg but I already know who it won't be developed by.
BTW did any of you catch Smedeley's pathetically veiled "I care about the community" post on the SWG boards? What he was really saying was "Stop cancelling your subs, my job is on the line".
Whats your point? Really, it sounds like your trying to tell me I won't be cool unless I play the game MOST other people like. Gee thanks for that. I could care less who comes to EQ II and who doesn't. I happen to love the game and I am gonna continue to play it.
Really, get over the fact that I am happy with my choice. Its a GAME, deal with it.

They're not bagging your choice of a game, Fadeus, so get over yourself. If you're happy playing it, then more power to you.
The fact of the matter is, is that EQII is not the 'wild success' that Everquest was. It offers nothing new, demands a lot of cash upfront to even play (via upgrades and such), and, coupled with the rushed launch and horribly pathetic customer service, isn't going to be the 'mmorpg' end all/be all that SOE hoped it would be. You may say that EQ2 has 250k subscribers, but then you have to think of how many of those are mutliple boxers, etc. Also, EQII is hemorraghing players pretty badly. So that 250k playerbase suddenly doesn't look so big anymore. Especially compared to EQ's 500k playerbase.
It will be interesting to see when some of these other games come out. A lot of players right now are simply biding their time, looking for the game that holds their interest. Most of the games out right now just aren't doing that. If you're happy with EQ2, then stick with it. Wish you the best. But don't try to defend a product simply because someone critcises it for why they didn't like it.
Oh, and about the comment about playing a game that most other people play. It's a /very/ relevant number, because what number is a company going to look at? The smaller core of players who will rabidly play the game, or the larger casual base who might enjoy playing it? Guess who the company is going to target. So the game will change to become more attractive to that larger number. Especially with a company like SOE, who has proven time and again that it only cares about the bottom line.
Either everything you say is true, or you are tooo out of touch to know anything about SOE. SOE has a total of roughly 1 million players playing all 6 of its online games.
- Cosmic Rift - Infantry - EverQuest - EverQuest 2 - Planet Side - Star Wars Galaxies
EQ alone has made between 200 million (conservative estimate) to 1 billion (liberal estimate) in profits for SOE. EQ cost 5 million to make. Plus another 30 million to buy back from Smeadly. SOE is doing just fine. SOURCE: Business 2.0 Magazine (article titled " The Sorcerer of Sony" )
Stop worrying about lists, and instead worry about the 2 most important things:
1. Have you found a game you like? If yes, go play it!
2. Is the game you like to play in any danger of being shut down? Is it making enough profit? If it is doing fine, then it does not matter if it is on a list, at the bottom of a list, or not even on a list.

Okay, you CANNOT compare any game to EQ! EQ has been around for such a long time, that they have had a very long time to fix it and let it grow. You cannot compare the Father of MMORPGs to his son (EQ to EQ2)
Besides, I am not sure if you noticed, PvP is being introduced, and, EQ2 is SO much better than when it launched! Its almost another game!
