Can you show me a single MMO of this size - thing AAA games, not the middle or lower end of hte market where any free trial has turned up in first 12months

Im getting old, but i seem to remember that WoW took almost to the end of WoW vanilla to offer free trials  (might of even been after the first expansion)

In the sense that you signed up, and dowloaded yes it was after vanilla. However WoW did have Guest passes in box that you could hand to your friends very early on (you also gave them your game discs so they could install). I don't remember the exact month, but I purchased my game the patch right before the first battlegrounds lanched. Which I believe was very early on in Vanilla.

Are you done venting? You can wait a while like every one else on the fence. You're actually showing prudence by not buying without a trial which is good, but ranting like this should be directed to SE. If any thing, free trials right now would do the following:

    1. Open up another avenue for gil sellers to abuse.

    2. Possibly lock-down and crash more servers like the problems they had in the first few weeks of launch.

Frankly, securing those problems are more important to them right now than attracting more customers. You can call it what ever you want, but that's their call.Lastly, they're not forcing you to play, any way.

Thank you for one of the more rational replies here, oh wait you think I'm venting.  It seems like a silly reason to hold off on expansion.  Consider the money made, I don't think the problems are that complicated to fix.  Other MMOs have done incredibly well with combating spammers.

Point 1: Well considering you're calling out to "Zealots" and "Fanatics" to argue why you wouldn't be "absolutely bonkers" then yes I'm perfectly confident you're venting and out to get someone lol.

Point 2: No, it doesn't seem like a silly reason.

    • You forget that this is a sub-game. Ideally, they are after player-retention rather than box sales. Another thing to consider is the $30 box price compared to the standard $60 box price. Both indicate that long-term subs would be more profitable than box sales - buyers which would be prone to have negative feedback due to the current issues they are trying to fix.
    • Have you even considered the market for MMOs right now? Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge and EQNext are all not due until mid next year. It would be strategic to offer trial around then, but right now they are perfectly positioned in their market without having to offer trials.

    1) No, If you read what I actually wrote I was calling on you guys to approach reason and from an unbiased standpoint before killing yourselves to defend SE.  Obviously the majority of posters here either can't understand that or are too hurt that someone is questioning their 'almighty' to even consider.

    2) Yes, it is beyond silly to not expand when you are succeeding.  Otherwise you won't grow your marketshare or PCU and limit your own growth.

I did not forget the game's business model.  It appears you have forgetting this game's tarnished reputation in which the IP Creator even suggested this was bad for the series.  I don't understand the relevance to restating the entire point behind the business model? - Ahh there we go, to the heart of an answer I'm looking for.  So the game even after a relaunch and controversy is still experiencing problems massive enough for you to consider it possibly hurtful to new viewers.. Got it

I have considered, but apparently you have not considered that despite anything done the game will lose marketshare regardless of SE's actions when those MMOs release. It is the nature of the market.  Now why would they want to limit the amount of customer exposure prior to the launch and sink the hooks into their customers which a retail box price/sub model requires.  Note: That's a rhetorical question since I've gotten my answer out of you.

Come back in a year ?

I thought I'd just quote this to save the stupidity here in the event you edit your post.

    1. Well, with a OP like that who can blame them? You're merely at the other end of the spectrum so you're no different from your approach. The sooner you realize this, the less you'd look silly defending yourself.

    2. Beyond silly? Strong words for something reasonably countered. You can appear argumentative, but your reasoning is rather shallow. Arguing for the sake of arguing is quite boring.

"So the game even after a relaunch and controversy is still experiencing problems massive enough for you to consider it possibly hurtful to new viewers"

Me considering what? I have nothing to do with it lol so stop shooting me down -  direct your silly arguments towards SE. For SE, yes they are still experiencing problems they want to consider minimizing for this re-release. Wait, what was your point again?

The failure in your reasoning is your concept of a market implies that this product (2.0) is the same as their as you say old, tarnished, product (1.0). It's a new product intended for a new market.

As an example of their problems and since you're an outsider arguing about something you know nothing about, you should realize that they don't even have enough instance servers to accommodate the current playerbase. Full groups queuing for instances cannot enter instances because they don't have sufficient servers. These upgrades are still due for 2.1.

Locking this due to continued baiting responses from the OP. If you want to discuss something, I suggest not insulting everyone who replies.
