[Review] Eternal Saga: Eternally AFK

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In our latest review, we take a look at R2Games' Eternal Saga to see how it measures up to the ever-crowded MMO competition. See what we discovered before heading to the comments to add your thoughts.

Wooosh. “What was that?” I hear you ask. Oh, it’s just the sound of me flying past on my glittery paper airplane. Where can you get one? Well look no further. Published by R2games entertainment, well known for their free-to-play games, Eternal saga is a F2P fantasy browser MMORPG in which your character helps to save the world from a demon invasion. Unlike their previous title, Wartune, R2 Games are moving away from strategy and more so into the world of fantasy roleplaying by bringing us an isometric top-down view complete with micro-transactions and an anime art-style environment. Oh, and more importantly, a sparkly paper airplane mount.

No offense to you Becky. Im sure this is a wonderfully written article, but I saw the score and the screenshot showing that the game has auto pathing and didnt even need to read the article before deciding I dont want to play this game.

Why even bother reviewing showvelware? Leave this garbage for mmohut. Waste of time and resources writing reviews for these types of "games".

That screen view is just hilarious. First quest - spot your character....

just another pay to win game.
  • DAOWAceDAOWAce Member UncommonPosts: 436

Just another one of those typical heavy microtransaction (even pay to win) focused games, graphics and all (mainly UI) we see more often than we'd like.

    *sigh*

Why do games like these continue to come out?

The fact that these "games" (that you don't even really play) are apparently successful enough to be copied over and over and over and even spawn sequels (I think Eternal Saga is a sequel to Crystal Saga) is just frightening.

If they review a few of those then people won't complain they rate a mediocre MMO 7 or 8 out of 10.

They got over a dozen other MMORPGs! How can they even develop for them all?

A patch once every year for each game if you are lucky!

Oh and check their forums, almost all games have more threads in their bug forums than in their General forums... oh em gee!

I'd never heard of auto pathing....granted I've never really looked at one of these types of games either. The whole thing seems rather pointless. My wife would probably love it.

Yea, there are a ton of these types of games, and MMORPG doesnt usually bother to review them. No idea why they chose to review this one, its really a waste of time. Although I do appreciate the honesty in the article, and maybe it will serve to educate some people on this type of game, and how to spot them, and then avoid them in the future. It also points out the type of game/content that this publisher carries, and saves anyone from bothering to look at anything connected with R2Games. So thanks for that.

This is one of "those" games that make me wonder who developes this kinda crap. Then i ask myself: what kind of company funds the developer?

And then suddenly i feel bad, because there has to be some people that actually play and pay,.... seriously. What is with the flood of games that look and feel like they have been made in a day (drunk)?

MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.

Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?

Considering how many ludicrously pointless unique NPCs there are, each with their own individual portraits (not counting repeats), the artst that drew the character art for this game probably spent more man-hours on it than the time needed to program it.

It'll probably pay off, too, I imagine. They just have to hook a few whales...

  • patlefortpatlefort Member UncommonPosts: 142
Pure pay2win garbage made with minimal effort and maximum milking. I also wonder how they keep making those "games". They sometimes shamelessly steal assets from other games, the one I tried copy-pasted assets from WoW.
  • BeowulfsamBeowulfsam Member UncommonPosts: 145

I dream a dream that someday people will stop playing (well, paying I guess) this kind of crap games which in turn would make the developers either stop making them or actually force them to make decent games.

Well, at least lulz are to be had about human stupidity...when on one hand you have AAA titles and ppl QQing that 12-15$/month is too much (I honestly don't know what else I can buy for 12-15$ and it provides me with a whole month of fun), and on the other hand u have people forking hundreds if not thousands of $$ to some crappy P2W games. Or 50-70$ for singleplayer game that lasts idk...4-8 hrs?

Actually, you'll find that playing this you'll hit level 20 in about 15 minutes, It's seriously the least involving game ever.

Did not even bother reading page 2.  I don't even see the point why anyone would even bother playing it.  It makes all the decisions for you.  Unless of course you don't really want to play and just let the computer do it all for you.

Personally, it is hard to believe someone actually wasted their time designing and writing this game.  Seriously, they need to find another line of work.

Their ad money is as good as any other company, no matter the quality of the product :)

This game is hilarious to try. I don't really know why, but I tried it and the author wasn't lying about everything being totally automated. I didn't know how to turn the automation off so my character literally was completely doing quests by itself without my input and I couldn't even tell it to stop. It's literally a game that plays itself. Why anyone would be entertained by this for more than a few minutes I don't know but it was surreal to watch.

The scary thing is that there are lots of games like this.  In fact, Eternal Saga is the sequal to one (Crystal Saga).

I tried this pub out once. A game I was following, City of Steam, went with this publisher. At the time I knew nothing of them so I tried them out while waiting for City of Steam to open its servers.

I found the auto-pathing system, along with the AFK combat mode, and the stamina energy depletion system (think Farmville where you run out of the ability to play), are in many if not all their games.

They are a horrid publisher that overcharges for what they deliver and explicitly try and constantly shove you to the cash shop. They don't care for quality game play or their customers. This was the worst gaming experience I've ever had with a publisher. They make any of the big named baddies look pretty darn nice by comparison.

Just as a side note they were, in my opinion, heavily responsible for the train wreck that CoS ended up in. Mechanist had some great ideas and a pretty nice little niche game until they let these jerks influence them.

4.1 is being kind. That can be said for any of their games based solely on how they run them. What is insane is that people could play better games for less money with Nexon, PWE, or Aeria. Oh yeah.

Exactly this. I hate R2 for destroying CoS  >:(
