Let us find our own way. Or engage other players to help us out. Let us have a reason to explore and socialize. Otherwize why make an online game? The whole quest marker thing in all the games now adays greatly reduces immersion. Pls dont do quest markers.
On titles: I'm not thrilled with the idea as it stands. Developers wind up spending more effort thinking up cool titles and less into how they're earned. They become little more than eye-candy. If you pick up a title every time you eat a frog, then everybody and their pet duck has a title or fifteen. My main in SWTOR has about 25 character and ten legacy titles. I don't even look at them anymore, and more than once have 'earned' one and not even noticed it.
Having said that, it's nice to have something to shoot for. Titles for worthy achievements (and the key word there is worthy). Customizable titles? This has to come from somebody who has absolutely no vague barking clue about just how ingenious ( or devious, as the case may be) MMO players are. If you put any latitude in there at all, in about 40 seconds you'll have "Viobenstraz, Prince of Duque Phartz" running around in the game. Jesus. There is going to be more than enough adolescent crap available just by allowing people to name their own toons. Customizable titles is just getting down on your knees and begging for trouble.
Besides, if you try to place modifiable (with restrictions) in there, then what you'll have is this: A team of five perfectly competent developers who *could* be contributing to making the game better spending month after month trying to finesse a restricted language parser that nobody has ever been able to suitably fabricate in order to generate eye candy where you can add racing stripes. I can't even *imagine* a more mind-bogglingly trivial or moronic waste of effort. I'd rather those developers spent their valuable time working on actual content, thank you very much.
If you want to customize something, at least figure out a way to let people put racing stripes on their bloody *armor*. At least with that, you might find some useful implementations, like guild colors, and it would be considerably less work to implement. The question would be - is it worth it? Do you actually want to allow some schmucks to put graphics in the game of mating bullfrogs? Because that is on somebody's wish list somewhere - make no mistake. There are always going to be a few thousand people willing to go far out of their way to break the illusion for everybody else. Lets agree to *not* hand them sledge-hammers, k?
