I love TSW. I will be playing that game until either I or it dies. its a given for how ive been talking on this forum. TSW's biggest weakness was that it was made by funcom. soo many people have a massive bug in their asses for that company. To me its my favorite company because they actually try to make something new instead of copy and pasting old stuff over and over. its funny when you think about it, you have a mass of people who want something new. When it shows itself they all say "its funcom not happening". Sorry guys but the only company trying new things right now is funcom.
I love the list personally I agree these 5 are the most underrated games in the industry right now. This is coming from someone who has played a lot of games and played each on the list.
Because i can. I'm Hopeful For Every Game, Until the Fan Boys Attack My Games. Then the Knives Come Out. Logic every gamers worst enemy.
"It’s now F2P beyond the initial purchase, and sales are always happening. "
Why couldn't William Murphy, the managing editor of mmorpg.com, figure out how to type "B2P" or "buy to play". It's little stuff like this that makes me think alot of mmorpg.com staff don't even play mmo's much, or certainly not passionately enough to be a discussion contributor.
Because every author tries to write and explain things on a new way? And what he said is not false, just did not used the too often used "B2P".
I bought Fallen Earth at launch. Even talked to the devs at PAX prime 2009. Even they said it wasn't a sandbox. And when it launched, it was way more sandbox-ish than it is now. If you guys think FE is a sandbox, then by default FFXIV is one too, and TSW, and even Rift for that matter.
Uhhhh...wat? FE may not be a sandbox in strictest sense of the word, but it's a thousand times more sandboxy than Rift or FFXIV.
I agree with the list and particularly Wakfu. It is a turn based MMO with a completely player ran Government and Economy with 4 factions. It plays almost exactly like Final Fantasy Tactics or even a Disgaea game, which is really unique for an MMORPG, plus the crafting was very fun to me. I actually went back a couple months ago, but it had almost nobody playing it which was relatively sad so I couldn't continue. Highly recommended for anyone who is into FF tactics or Disgaea and want a similar experience in an MMO setting. You have to not mind cartoony anime esque graphics though.
Rift is that game that everyone wanted to like, but as many have stated here it just becomes boring and lackluster the more you try to get into it. PvP is worse than WoW with all classes having no specific roll... every class can and usually does use only the high range dps builds for pvp... so people run around shooting each other at range. Makes for a very boring and repetitive combat.
Age of Conan would make a better choice on this list than a few others.
The sad truth about TSW for me is that I LOVED the game in many ways but I simply cannot handle the terrible combat and limited skills. I absolutely required a strong connection with the combat mechanics. It must become fluid (so often only certain classes work for me) and instinctual.
In TSW (an absolutely beautiful game too btw that sets mood better than ANY mmo) I've sat inside the combat testing rooms for many hours with 150-ish points saved to throw around to test builds and powers. I've never once found anything I thought "Yes! This is it! This is fun!". It is clunky and tedious instead of fun.
That one glaring fault removed and I am playing the game instantly. I simply cannot enjoy a game where I only have 4 or so skills in my rotation and a small handful of support/utility. The absolute killer was the builder system to use powers. I quit playing a rogue in both Wow and Rifts because I was SICK AND TIRED of a damn builder system.
Rift shouldnt be on there.. Fallen earth I agree with.. Should replace rift with Age of wushu.. Age of conan I heard is a pretty good game nowadays even tho its been out for sooooo long. Can't say how well the new Darkfall is doing I only played the first version.
I never have understood why Ryzom never got more popular. I had so much fun with this game in the past and I feel like playing it again now seeing it here.
I wouldn't dispute any of the games on there, but there's a few more I would add:
Age of Conan -- really interesting combat mechanics, and good storytelling as well
Lord of the Rings Online -- it's sort of quiet and under the radar, but it has some very beautiful landscapes as well as interesting plotlines throughout. Very nice job of staying true to the books.
Also: Anarchy Online, Vanguard, Allods Online, Age of Wushu, Darkfall and EVE.
Originally posted by Groot It's so weird, I try my hardest to really like Rift. It always leaves me feeling so lacking through. It's an amazing game with no soul.
I agree 100%. If I had to sum up Rift in 1 phrase, "amaizing game with no soul" would be it.
While its not simply "another WoW clone", there is no doubt that its in fact a WoW clone. The thing that makes it stand out though, is that it actually copied WoW, Its not some half assed attempt with missing features and content left and right that other MMOs have done in recent years.
My only other knock on it is, although nowhere near as bad as EQ2, its graphics engine is one of the most unoptomized engines available. I am able to play TSW with max settings and tesselation enabled in DX11 and the game never drops below 70fps, including in combat.....Rift on the other hand, like EQ2, I need to lower the graphics to the point that it looks worse than EQ1 in order to get it running without dipping below 60 fps in dungeon combat.....for someone who spent quite a bit of coin on a pretty beast PC, that isvery dissapointing.

I'm sorry but wushu is outright garbage. Unless you sub to that game. Then you get over 10x more cultivation then a F2P'er which is definitely good.
Only thing Wushu gets right is allowing a major bonus to "subs" while the F2P get's a good "base." There is no P2W in wushu with subbing, but subbing saves you a hell of a lot of time.
But the gameplay is subpar. It's terrible. When you first start out in the game since you're not used to a free open world you start to look for at least a couple quests.
Well, as soon as you realize the cultivation system the game is a breeze but until then...it's hard to level up anything.
Subbing, I had a crazy-high ranked character (2 weeks comparison sub/no sub.) excellent in pvp w/in 2 weeks. I was "owning" during the faction school wars simply and primarily because I subbed. It allowed me to rank up my cultivation skills and chi and all that stuff a whole hell of a lot faster not to mention there's no cap and it just adds up daily/hourly.
Oh, not to mention a sub is required to unlock those end boss special items in instances...it goes from a measely like 1-3% drop rate or basically "never" to 30% or better.
TSW isn't really underappreciated due to its really horrible animations and other aspects that vastly draw away from its otherwise great base game design. If Funcom was capable of fixing their mistakes (See AO and AoC for a prime example of not being able to) then TSW would have stood a chance.

I felt like this game was amazingly beautiful (still is) for its time. Unfortunately, it relies too much on the player to create his/her own fun which immediately makes it fairly niche. This game is/was a roleplayer's dream.

Agreed. The ability/skill system is confusing at first. During beta, my first run through Kingsmouth left me very disappointed. My second time through, combat started to somewhat make sense. My third time through, and I immediately grasped what Funcom was trying to do. The mission system "felt" better. Even still, a few changes to a build can make all the difference between crappy combat and something that is fairly fun (and likewise between feeling pretty OPed and fairly gimped).
I never really bought their excuse for some of the lackluster animations. It took them a few tries to get a reasonable looking jump. To me, this was very surprising since I thought AoC had some fairly well done animations.
I don't know why Rift is even on this list, as it seems pretty well appreciated amongst the MMO-gamer playerbase. This is usually the game everyone I know juggles in addition to their current main game, if it isn't already their main game. I think this spot would've been best reserved for something like DCUO or even Tera.
I really can't understand what everyone is talking about when they say that TSW's combat is bad ?
Is it such a huge diffrence from any other MMO ..?
Well, I fail to see the huge diffrence
Tab targetting. Action bar of 7 abilities. To get most out of all the abilities they have to link with passives. Once all that is done you are "good to go" and are able to "1111234."
The UI was horrid and the controls were even more horrid in FE...if they would have had that better I would have stayed. Plus, I didn't like that everybody could make everything and everything was the same at each lvl there was no difference to any weapon/armor. You only got a few selcect choices at every lvl with the different types of weapons there were made. You couldn't make money unless you lowballed everyone.
TSW is ok, I didn't mind it, If they had duel swords probably would have stayed...I know sad.
There are a LOT of people that will call any fantasy mmorpg a 'wow clone'.
I have to assume that most of them would also call almost any automobile a Model T clone as well. (It's got a steering, wheel, gas pedal, brake pedal, 4 wheels, and an engine, so it must be a clone.)
Secret World is not appreciated because it's extremely primitive. It feels like it was built in the 90's. When your toon is in a conversation, your character stands there like a fool. It doesn't even blink or fidget but it sure does way too much of that during character creation.
Much of the game feels like it was directly stolen from Vampire Bloodlines, right down to accessing computers in the game and using the exact same commands to access the information.
Seriously... Go play Vampire Bloodlines. The devs obviously played it and decided that WW wasn't coming out with an MMO fast enough so they would create their own. Soooo not impressed.
It is never a good thing when a game feels like it was made that long ago. t is in no possible way a next gen MMO. Not by game play or in any other way.

Now Playing: DARKFALL Unholy Wars "Return to Open World, Full Loot PvP, Conquest in a Sandbox MMO with player driven economy! Just like classic MMOs!"
EQ during its prime wasn't. This was one of EQ1's strengths.
My guild was doing Plane of Time 2 or 3 expansions after it was current and still getting upgrades from Quarm.
DIKUMMO? I've never heard that before. Like a DIKU MUD, right? Neato
maybe its simply a mistake in this top but you forgot NEOCRON !!!
best game ever made and still innovative now
