Well for starters there's no waiting AC2, you get access to it with an AC1 subscription. They're doing work on AC2 and improving it, but the game still needs work.

AC1 has increased its noob friendliness significantly over the last few years. There is a lot more direction out of the gate which ends up leading you to a Facility Hub which helps you get up to level 45ish. From there you can use contracts (quest trackers) to guide you to more to do. The community is generally pretty helpful to new/returning players, just don't trust anyone that tells you to leech up or to go sit in the same dungeon and macro mobs. There are far more enjoyable ways to level and learn the game.

AC does give you a lot of freedom, which can be tough for some people who are used to rails. You can hunt, you can quest, there's lots to explore, there are lots of skills to try, all around you get to do what you want. Just have fun with it.

Came back last month. Had been away around 7-8 years, anyway, the community is small but very friendly. As was said in another post, the game is very newbie-friendly. Of course it's even friendlier once you are in a good alliance, which happened to me about the 2nd week in. If you like sand-box & freedom, this game is for you. Greatest story-lines of any mmo and content for all phases of the game. Graphics junkies wont like it but gameplay is what counts and AC never disappoints, at least as far as I am concerned. Jump on in-the waters fine :)

And if you're really concerned about what allegiance you might find, the devs are currently running one that anyone can join and have fun in.

I'm still trying to decide if I will join "them", lol, (joking). Seriously, I saw that they have done this and have to admit, it's a really good idea. Oh, will add this, though I assume most would already realize it-they wont use their godly dev-powers within their monarchy, lol,so dont expect it to rain mmd's and free loot & levels :)
