Mmorpg right for us? Working couple

WerdanoWerdano Member Posts: 3

Hello everybody!

I will start with description of our situation. Me and my girlfriend we are both working ppl with several free-time hours for playing games in the evening. We want to play together. We love RPGs but in slightly different ways.

I used to be so called hardcore player experienced in many MMORPGs like WoW, Anarchy Online, SWTOR, Rift, Secret World, LOTRO, Aion etc. I have spent almost 10 years with large groups of ppl in great guilds going through many dungeons and raids and it took me a LOT of time but i loved it. I always hated all PvP and never realy did that. (I have no time for this "gaming-style" anymore)

She is more into singleplayer RPGs like Baldurs Gate, NWN, Witcher, Skyrim, Dragon Age etc., and she, same as me, hate PvP.

Right now we are playing casualy Diablo 3 in our free time, which suits us quite a lot. But as I know from my MMORPG experience, there are much more interesting games and their worlds. Problem is that every single MMO I have played had engame content in form of raids for large groups of ppl. So I am looking for game which would have PvE (endgame) content nearly 100% fully doable only in two players.

Thanks a lot for any advice!

I would be willing to bet money that both of you would enjoy FFXIV: ARR. It can be addicting at times though and your self control will be tested, but more or less you can get major things done in game without sacrificing your life. As good as it is now the future of this game is even brighter. It accommodates all players and that will only get broader with time as well.

It doesn't meet 100% of your criteria but you should really give this game a try. Take care.

Yep, both pvp (in mmo's) and the so-called "endgame" sucks big time :)

If you don't mind the grind, LotRO is on the process of slowly refocusing onto the small fellowship / solo play (but the grind is huge... on the other hand it's daily, so it fits to the "playing a few hours in the evenings" schedule)

TSW could be a nice one as well, not the gear grind in the end I mean, but the game itself. It's fun to play as a fixed duo, with synchronised decks.

    I would try out TSW.

It does not fit everything you are looking for, but it should keep a casual duo busy for a few months at least.

So then you aren't really looking for a MMORPG, because almost without exception their primary end game involves activities with larger groups of players, most frequently end game dungeons / raiding or PVP.

While almost all MMORPG's have content that a duo could focus on, such as daily quests, or perhaps housing or collectables, the real meat of most titles in this genre is to get players to interact with each other, no matter how much single player content they provide along the way. (which is considerable in almost every case btw)

So SWTOR would be a great game for you two, at least until you got to level 50 and found out that after that, it's all about raiding and PVP.  But so would TSW, LOTRO, FFXIV or any other modern theme park be the same, there' would be lots of content to enjoy, but eventually you will hit the wall.

You actually made a great choice with D3, you really can play it's end game as a duo, but it is limited in it's experience.

There's actually very few titles you would need to steer clear of, as long as you were willing to accept the fact that once you get to end game, there will be some key activities you won't be able to participate in.

Thx to all. I'll give it a try. FFXIV looks interesting as well as transforming Lotro.

My idea was finding something like lets say WoW, where you would be able to kill even the most evil biggest final boss in two players for much much less loot compared to full big raidforce. (like 2% item drop chance instead of 4 items every 25man raid). But in terms of game content you would be able see everything and kill everything in game. Of course playtime and reach the best equipment would take much longer this way, but that is not problem for us.

Star Trek Online is a great game although some of it requires you to do some missions solo, most can be done in a small group. The end game is doing small dungeons that take 15m max to complete for tokens. There are no raids and pvp is completly avoidable. If your an RPG fan this game has so much you customisation choices from characters, crew to ships and starbases.

Guild Wars 2, although half the game is all pvp its all avoidable the pve side of the game could be called a separate game its very fun not to difficult and updates every 14 days. All content except the story quests can be done by 2 players and there are no raids at all. ide highly recommend it as a pve game :P

Yeah, I've seen this request before, but to date I haven't seen a MMORPG developer offer such an end game mechanic, but there might be some titles more in the MMO space that (such as D3) that do.

    That's a good question! :-)

My spouse and I both work full time and we very casually play WoW.  Since you're a veteran, there is some old content you can easily 2man for fun.

Played: Ultima Online - DaoC - WoW -

I say EQ2 would be the closest if you're duoing.

You can do almost everything in the game because you can hire mercenaries so you can have a party of 4.  Of course alot of the Raids you would need to kinda out gear them a bit but it's very doable just duoing in that game.

    I would suggest the following:

Ryzom: A bit weird but doesn't focus on end game raiding

Neverwinter online: It's really lame though, i played it, can't believe i got addicted to such no in-depth game but hey it has fluid combat but you can raid for end game gear.

EVE: May not be a cup of tea, but you guys could go out in low sec space, one mines, the other protects, it's not bad at all. Try the free trial.

    Ignore my neverwinter selection.
