Why are most reviewers of GW2 fixated on the "Legendaries, no grind" narrative? This was Anet's pre-launch mantra, and I can't believe it's still being repeated.
Legendary, no grind has long been replaced by Ascended, yes grind. You now have to max your crafting (even if you hate crafting) to a tune of 200g or its equivalent in materials for Ascended weapons. There is also the huge time gate for Laurels that must be used for all Ascended gear. Also, Ascended Armor is coming by the end of the year. Anyone want to guess how bad the grind will be on that?
Get the facts straight!
Mostly because the only people who are grinding ascended weapons either find it enjoyable or are doing ridiculously high level fractals.
There's no need for ascended gear in any other facet of the game, though I do wish that WvW players had a more viable way of gaining ascended gear so that naysayers lose their only argument.
Thats like saying raid gear in wow is not needed because you can do everything else without it.
GW2 has gear gating, a point they sold the game has not haveing.
show me where GW2 have gear gating
you can do anything without need of the ascended gear (yes high lvl fractals also just dont get hit by agony )
Stopped doing PVE stuff a LONG time ago. I log in press B and enter WvW.
The living story stuff..........well it doesnt feel alive to me. I just highly enjoy the WvW aspect of the game.
Nothing more exciting then 3-6 people thinking they found a solo easy prey and end up either getting wiped or giving up trying to kill me and going on their way!

Are you the one hiding behind the legendaries the other day and you wonder why we give up!

Yeah but it seems to be their only major content updates really... Sure they work on PvP and added an LFG tool (over a year after the game was released I may add), but PvE content in this game is extremely uninspired.
I try all the time to get back in the game to make most of my $60 but it feels like a chore.
I know a few people who feel that way. Worst case scenario, come back for 3-4 hours every other week until something clicks. Or try sPvP.
Personally, I've enjoyed the majority of the last few updates except this one and SAB 2.0. When I don't really feel like doing new content, it's usually a great time to catch up on old content.
I was a bit confused about LFG tool is it still in beta and if not where is it?
It's still in beta and it falls incredibly short of what it should do. It simply organizes your advertisement. Once again, they're falling short of standard functionality.
It seems to do exactly what it is designed to do. Are you wanting it to be an automated everything like it is in WoW? The system they currently have is a lot more robust than that, it just won't automate everything for you.
The lfg tool you can get to it by two ways
Nr1 go to a dungeon and try to enter it will get a pop up with 3 choices first need more members lfg story or explore mode click the top one.
Nr2 press y to get up ur friends window got to looking for group tab and chose what dungeon or openworld or fractal level you want to do and post a lfg
If you don't like to grind, and just care about story, you're out of luck.
Dear David North, you see me shocked. Are you the same David North who ignored all the facts for a year and wrote one advertising article after the other for GW2? What you write in this article is nothing special for the game you commented for a year and more. Really, I don't joke here. Nearly all parts of the living story have been this way, this is nothing new to us. This is why I ask, if there are more David Norths writing for MMORPG?
In fact it is even less grindy than most of the other patches, as long as you don't count following the masses through the labyrinth as grind. Candy Corn, well buy it, you don't need to lift a finger. Fun? Well... you didn't mention fun in your articles much.
During development ArenaNet mentioned that they wanted to do away with mindless grinding.
Actually this has been mentioned countless times for months now in each and every forum, even as comments to your articles. Yes, you are right, but where have you been months before. This hasn't changed since release.
Nothing personal. But really... why do you wake up only this week after more than a full year of biweekly patches of pretty consistant quality? Oh btw, there is some piece of story for this patch, but those devs have still not found a way to get it into the game. If you don't visit their website, you will miss it. But Colin Johanson wrote in their forum, he absolutely loves the website story and we all know by now, what he loves will stay, no matter, what the community might think about it. But that is a different story, and we both agree story is not, what ArenaNet or GW 2 does best, right?
"My issue is that rather than coming up with something interesting, such as ghost hunting..."
Isn't this called the Lunatic Inquisition?
" If you don't like to grind, and just care about story, you're out of luck."
This is completely untrue. While it is true that you need to finish the meta achievements to gain the candy elemental mini in order to finish the story, the daily halloween achievements count towards the meta! These are meant for the casual player, they're super easy and only take a few minutes to complete ex) "carve 5 pumpkins". You can do two of these a day, allowing you to access the story with practically zero grind. In addition, as long as one person in your party enjoys earning the achievements and has the candy elemental mini, you all can enter, even if you yourself hate the achievements and didn't bother with them.
"Now we have this event takes a huge step backwards and forces a grind, not just for the achievements, but for the story as well."
First of all you're definately not forced. Next, some achivements might require a grind, they are there for those who want to invest extra time and effort into earning them. Lastly as I said above enjoying the story does not require grind, if you wanted you could completely ignore the Living Story achievements and spend a minute or two to complete your daily and head straight to the story.
"Just running around with a zerg killing enemies for a while just isn’t fun."
I assume your talking about the Labrinth? I've completed all the achievements and have all the candy corn I want. This might just be me, but I still visit the Labrinth, not because I feel I have to grind but because I actually enjoy taking on the Halloween bosses with my guildies!
Keep in mind to, that alongside the Halloween stuff, we've also got the new WvW Season and the quality of life updates.

Essentially, yes. I look at Rift and WoW, and I see excellent grouping functionality. It's succinct, it's fluid, and it gets you to where you need to go. Given that Guild Wars 2 has been all about stripping out the supposedly unnecessary features like travel times, I can't see why they didn't just go with this. It's nothing that the gw2lfg didn't already accomplish. It's literally one more advertisement channel.

Last I checked, high lvl fractals with no ascended gear was mainly through 'creative game mechanics' which might / or might not be 'safe'.
