but a spring cleaning will free up a lot of names on unused accounts
and it will also make the game more cost effective
but it really shows swtors main problem:
they have lots of people coming to check it out
but very few decide to stay, and pay
APB is tanking too..GTA5 is definately taking a heavy toll
Not really the 1.7 mil or so people who left have left the game with not many decent names , so they are freeing them up. Plus the fact it's getting it's second expansion way early , some people onhere thought S.S.S.P, = 2015.

why dont they just use STOs name system? thats the best in the business
in fact, why develop a big budget mmo, like this, WITHOUT the best system?
Yeah I agree their naming system is pretty bad really. I don't know STO's one but anything would have been better than what they used on SWTOR. All you needed really was one unique name for your whole account , alphabetical or not , doesn't matter. Luckily I only had to change 2 of my character names but still a good few people had to change lots. I guess , if they ever do another MMO , which is likely , from my sig , then yeah they won't do it the same way again.

As someone who lost 3 character's names during one of the previous merges, I'd support simplius's suggestion...
BadOrb: it's a great one (not STO's btw rather Cryptic's since they've use it in all 3 games),
-you have an account name with which you log in, unique of course. You don't use it anywhere else, so it adds a slight boost to security as well (but not much).
-Then you have a display name, which is unique (can be totally different from your login name), that is the name displayed in all 3 games, on the forums, etc. (sidenote, + in all the other PWE games as well)
-and since the display name is the unique one, you can have any character name you want, physically the character is called char.name@displayname (but the @displayname part isn't shown, only if you turn it on in the display menu). So there can be not only one, but even dozens of Connor MacLeod's (with different @displaynames of course)

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of cryptics naming to me it ruins any type of immersion . I turn chat off in STO cause with all the @ this @ that it's just cluttered and a mess. I much rather have names like Swtor and lotro do. I think in Swtor your legacy name being @joeblow would be a horrible idea. Anyways just my thoughts. Plus if your name gets taking away cause you havfnt played in two years well no offense but good .
This is very good. At least people will have a chance to get a decent name. I couldn't for the life of me get a good name for RIFT, although I didn't try out that game till a year after release. I tried a good two hours before I "created" a name that didn't sound like as if I had smashed my forehead on the keyboard.

I think this hits the nail on the head.
They reported 2.4M box sales, some with one character but others with several. Probably 5M or 10M unused names. Of course these will have been across 240 servers. Probably 20k to 40k names tied up per server. Awkward but obviously not a priority issue.
The launch of F2P however has brought at least 2M new accounts - probably more since they announced 2M. So another 2M, 5M or 10M names tied up .... but across a much smaller number of servers. Whatever the number is it could be very high: 100k, 250k per server; 500k per server. All depends on how many characters each account creates of course.
