As much as I like this article, I feel like I have to point out 2 things.
1. Not only MMOs do that, but the entirety of the gaming industry.
2. i believe the reason behind all this is relatively simple. Nowadays, most people get bored of their games quickly. I've noticet some coments on here saying that games nowaday are to short, however statistics show that most gamersnever finish their games. Thus, it just becomes a race. Beat it quickly or abandon it. Endgame just lengthens the playtime for this kind of people for 2, 3 months tops.
Now, I am not saying I like this state of things, but this is where mmo gamng is going, and I quess it's one of those things we are gonna have to get used to.

Wanna know why people get bored of MMOs quickly. Because end game tends to lack content and be boring and repetitive. More leveling content at least keeps them interested longer, but also this is only true if the leveling content is not boring and repetitive like end game content. Players don't want shorter games, they want to have fun and if they aren't having fun they leave. This isn't a sign that they like shorter games, this is a sign that the games people are shipping aren't fun. It is very easy for something to be fun for the first ten minutes you are still learning things, but when that new shine wears off you start to realize whether the game was actually fun or it just felt fun because it was new, in the case of the later it is time to move on.
