and then quit and uninstall because it's EXACTLY the same as EVERY other "Asian" MMO and COMPLETELY mindless. Let's no forget how there's absolutely no challenge. A monkey could level in this game. A monkey with an erection. The 1/2 naked barbie-doll breast-implanted sexy bombshells are pretty funny, but they don't save this game... maybe except for horny teenage boys.
I'm amazed at what the MMORPG genre has degenerated into... especially the Asian Grinders, as I call them. I can't even call them grinders anymore, because there's only quest "chainers" now. Mindless easy-mode monotony. Hell, you barely even get exp from killing things at all.
I haven't found many games in YEARS that have anything other than:
1) Create character from 4-5 of the same classes that are in every other game
2) Go to next area and get quest(s)
3) Perform mindless kill X of Y mobs or get X of Y components (same as kill quest, essentially) or the endlessly spawning mobs that spawn in exactly the same place and usually don't even aggro you
4) go back to step 2
There's really not much else.
To say there's no challenge in MMO's anymore is the understatement of the year. They are almost all linear and scripted to death.
GW2 was the best game I've played in a long time, but even that was in easy-mode, so without any real challenge, I got bored after maxing 2 characters, easily.
I just don't understand the Asian market, just to pick on them, because it's so easy to. There are countless f2p/item mall games being churned out with NOTHING differentiating one from the next. They have different graphics and sound, not much else. They all follow the EXACT same formula. I have NO IDEA how people play these games, or how they KEEP playing them, and how they make money with so many of them available. What's the point? There's no challenge, no danger, and you always know what to expect.. where a mob is going to be, how it's going to end up fighting it, etc.
I don't even die in games anymore unless I'm just watching TV while playing, or simply don't care to pay attention. Since there's no death penalty anymore, just die for a free teleport to town.
I'm level 16 in Scarlet Blade (easy as hell) and I've only seen a few types of aggro-ing mobs. Most of the time I go AFK while sitting in the middle of a group of mobs. Pathetic.
Luckily there are two Ultima Online style sandbox coming out - that I know of. It's about time. There's a reason UO is still running and still making money... maybe game devs would wake up and realize they can make money with a sandbox game. Sadly, most sandboxes out now are terrible. Feels like 2 college kids slapped it together as their CS project.
Bleah. Give me a good MMO to play. Quality, polish, non-scripted, exploration, crafting, etc. Can't seem to find one anymore...

Don't know if I must laugh or facepalm...
EDIT: link was broken, fixed now.
My computer is better than yours.
the good mmos of yesteryear lacked polish
I think mmos and gamers both are focusing too much on polish
EQ2 fan sites
No, I can see why you would say that. I totally expected this game to be about boobs with no real game behind it. I was just mainly using it as an example of how it uses the exact same formula as most all other Asian MMOs, as well as many others. They just can't seem to add anything new.
They all have the exact same anime-like characters
They all have unrealistic-looking characters - player models - barbie-doll women, chiseled men. That just gets old when all their games do it
They all have almost the exact same leveling/questing scructure
They all have almost the same item enhancement ability
and so on...
I don't understand why it's so difficult to use some imagination...
Stuff like:
-Creatures/mobs that work together to defend themselves, chase you like they did in EQ, are actually dangerous
-Mobs that can capture you, where you need to escape or be rescued
-GROUPS are encouraged and required for many types of tasks... not just solo everything except for dungeons - It's an MMO, they need to bring back the multi-player part
-Mobs that hunt players, across the world
-Packs of animals where the alpha's will viciously defend their young - where you need strategy, like predatory animals use, to pick off the weak or single one out.. that roam the world, not just spawn endlessly in the exact same place
- Enemy bases to take over, and if not kept up, the mobs will take it back, or hell, just try to take it back after a certain period of time (random, or based on other variables)
- Player/characters with varied skills - not just mash the 1-10 on your keyboard with purely attack skills
I could go on and on... *sigh*
LOL. The designers, and especially the animators of the characters are just pure pervs, if not pedophiles.. They even have that little girl character type. What's up with the fascination some Asian cultures (Japanese *COUGH*) have with little girls, especially school-girls???
The boob bouncing, swaying, etc is both funny and pathetically sad at the same time.
Easily the most sexist MMO I've ever seen.. if not any video game I've tried...
It's true, like EQ.. that was really rough around the edges, but they did lack the tech and horsepower that exists today. The early games were just breaking ground too, so they didn't have too many other games to copy or enhance. I tried EQ again using a private server and wow, the animation, playability, graphics, etc, were AWFUL. I remembered them being a lot better.
Many games now are polished, etc, but just use pretty graphics to make up for the lack of a real game behind it.
I still can't get past games that use auto-walk. That says a lot about their game if you can press one hyperlink in a GUI and it walks/runs your character across the world for you. Sad. What's the point in playing it at all. I thought I even saw a couple games that automate fighting/leveling at lower levels. That's like saying "Our game is so boring and monotonous, that we do the fighting for you. Sit back and enjoy as we level your character to a point where the character can pvp or be useful at all".
Sorry, I like to enjoy the ride and, ALL of the game.. not just a race to endgame.
You mean to tell me that this is an mmorpg? I play it to read the articles...
I don't know why out single out the Asian ones, outside of the anime they are just copying WoW the same way most other games do.
Scarlet Blade is ewwwww...But I do appreciate a game that's so reprehensible in its marketing that I absolutely know it will be bad without even trying it...It's a weird kind of truth in advertising
My friends played Scarlet Blade when it first came out, and invited me to try it out. I had heard of it from Mike Byrne when he was at MMObomb (Now at gamebreakertv) and knew it was just going to be a shallow game attempting to pander to the sexually repressed people that companies believe make up a good percentage of MMO players.
I didn't have high hopes for the game, but I downloaded it anyway. I got to the character select screen, picked the most clothed character and then was surprised (not really) to see all her clothes magically disappear. Uninstalled that one quick. Fortunately my friends didn't stay with the game much more than a week.
This video pretty much sums it all up, what I hope everyone who tried this game was thinking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpwBG2Dtpmk (rated B for bewbs)
I suppose I can't really say too much about over-sexualization in games, seeing as I'm playing TERA at the moment. But typically I like to keep my female characters as covered as possible (Except not right now as I'm playing an Elin in a school-girl outfit >.<)
On the eternal quest for that one perfect MMO.
