New Monitor

Gabby-airGabby-air Member UncommonPosts: 3,440

Hello everyone, my computer monitor just died on me today all of a sudden and i'm in need of something new. The previous monitor was a 19' LG Flatron with 1280x1024 resolution and I absolutely loved it, perfect screen size, colors, and resolution for my taste. I realize I probably won't be to find any monitors with that resolution and probably should bump it up so anything under/or at 24' with a resolution no higher than 1920x1200. As far as price is concerned, preferably under $300 but obviously if a good monitor for around $200 can be found I don't have to spend $300. I won't be doing any editing or photoshop that requires extremely accurate colors.

I do have a question regarding, 1920x1080 and 1920x1200. For those of you using the latter, how do you like it compared to 1080p?

I also went into the local Best Buy and found this monitor that looked quite good to me, plus it had speakers so I could hook up my Playstation if need be.

Any help or feedback is appreciated!

That price range can easily find something decent.

The difference between 1080 and 1200 amounts to about 1" of extra space along desktop on a 24" screen

There isn't physically 1" more, but there are that many more pixels if you could keep the same DPI.

The effect is that you have more desktop space on a 1200, and games have a bit better resolution.

The only negative effect would be if you watched DVD/BluRays on your computer a lot, there will be a very small black bar at the top/bottom, or the image gets stretched slightly to fill the screen. I haven't seen this in any games though (not even console ports that I have run).

As far as recommendations - go take a look at them in person if you can, and go with whatever looks best to you. Your eyes will tell you a lot more than some random online person ever could about what looks good for you. Ignore all the marketing jargon - crap like refresh rates and contrast and pixel response; they are important, but the numbers you see printed are all advertising crap and don't mean anything. Go with what looks good to you.

I don't normally recommend something outside the price range given by the OP but in this case I feel it's worth mentioning as it's not THAT far off for the value.

If you can swing $400 I'd HIGHLY recommend you consider picking up the following:

Yes it is significantly larger both in actual size and pixel density than what you had previously and even what you were considering but that is the reason I bothered bringing it up.  This monitor is almost ALWAYS sold out at local retailers because it's a complete steal at the price offered.  Similar monitors from more well known retailers will easily start at $200 more.

You might ask why then is this one so cheap, well for starters it's an A- Korean monitor.  For the vast majority of people the difference between a AAA and an A- grade monitor will never be noticeable because they simply don't need that level of fidelity in color.  These monitors also skimp a bit on outer casing/bezel build quality which, depending on the user, might be worth the extra cash.

With all that said there is one thing those major brand monitors will not allow you to do and is the very reason this monitor is such a bargain.  You can EASILY overclock it.  Please find me a similar size (27")/resolution (2560x1440) that runs faster than 60Hz for anywhere NEAR $400 from a major retailer.  I was being facetious of course as non of the major retailers version of a similar specced monitor would allow you to do so out of the box.

Trust me when I say IF you can afford the hike in price I promise you you won't be disappointed.  However in the rare chance you are, it's from a major computer retailer, just return it.

I have the 27" version of this:

It is by far the best looking screen and most responsive monitor I have owned to date.  You have to use a DVI-D cable to get the 144hz refresh rates, but it's worth it as everything animates more smoothly and clearly.

The cost seems to have come down a lot lately.  I bought an ACER last year because it was an IPS panel for the same price as the LCD that I had.  I actually like the picture better on the LG LCD than the Acer IPS.

I am looking at this just because of the thin bezel  http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_1195_700_1103&item_id=057702

although I may just grab this  http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_1195_700_1103&item_id=042161

You really can get a decent sized panel at a good price now.

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

For the 27' screen recommendations, sorry guys I'm using a temporary 24' screen and am already finding it too big.

For others, It seems that ASUS line comes well recommended across other websites as well in addition to you guys mentioning it so I'll likely pop by NCIX and look at them in person to make the decision.
